I Am Your Natural Enemy

Wen Yan originally thought the workload would be considerable, possibly needing the Mountain Ghost to finish the task by the New Year.

Unexpectedly, he greatly underestimated the prowess of the Divine Land in this area.

”Minister, will it be completed before the New Year?”

”Why? Is there anything special about it?” The General Director asked seriously, thinking it was a matter of a special trait.

”Not really, it’s just that I said earlier, he won’t make it to the New Year, and if he does, it’ll be a funeral celebration for him.”

”...”

The General Director was speechless for a while, surprised by Wen Yan’s thought process.

”Today, they’ll start building a temporary road, and within two hours, large machinery will arrive on site.”

”That’s good, then I’ll leave it to you, General Director. I’ll go meet the Water Monarch now. It wouldn’t be appropriate not to thank him in person.”

After hanging up the phone, Wen Yan felt much more at ease.

He called Feng Yao, asking him to arrange for some special liquor for the Water Monarch to be sent there.

He took out the Jade Pendant, released Tong Si and Feng Wei, traversed the Nether Path, and arrived near the Water Monarch’s place, entering the water to see him.

The Water Monarch hadn’t rested. After taking action once earlier, he’d been waiting to see if Wen Yan would come, and was surprised he’d arrived so quickly.

Wen Yan descended to the bottom of the water, adjusted his attire, and solemnly bowed long.

”Thanks to the Water Monarch for your righteous rescue.”

The Water Monarch pursed his lips, feeling a bit awkward due to Wen Yan’s serious demeanor.

”I wasn’t saving you; someone intruded on my territory. If I pretended not to notice, I’d lose face in the future.”

”Yes, yes, I understand, hence my gratitude to the Water Monarch for the rescue. I hurried over, hoping to bring some good liquor, but time was short. I’ll send some over in a couple of days to celebrate.”

The Water Monarch smacked his lips, saying nothing more.

Having grown accustomed to the liquor Wen Yan sent, his palate had indeed become more discerning.

It’s easy to go from frugal to lavish, something profoundly evidenced by the Water Monarch.

”How did you get involved with that side’s folks?”

”I went to handle a Mountain Ghost, and when I emerged, I found myself in a tributary of the Yellow River.” Wen Yan briefly summarized.

After hearing this, the Water Monarch caught on, and laughed heartily.

”Once again, old grudges. It seems that back then Thirteen offended everyone in the neighboring water system. Be cautious, lest you get killed.”

Wen Yan forced a laugh, wanting to say the Thirteenth Ancestor’s grudges had nothing much to do with him after all these years.

But clearly, even the Water Monarch considered it very natural for the Water God of the Yellow River system to want him dead.

Only because the Water Monarch of the Huai River was respected exclusively, when Wen Yan approached the Huai River, there must have been a bunch of Little Water Gods who would’ve been eager to kill him, offering his head to curry favor with the Water Monarch.

After two hours of chatting under the water, from liquor to meat, having aroused the Water Monarch’s appetite, Wen Yan promised to bring some barbecue next time he visits.

Upon leaving the water, Wen Yan didn’t rush home, but immediately turned back and headed to Central Plains County.

This time, passing through the Nether Path, upon coming out, he no longer saw the seemingly shattered mountains; instead, he normally appeared in Wangjia Valley.

People from the Scorching Sun Department had arrived, and the road roller too, extending a temporary dirt road along the already prepared path, with several excavators working efficiently together.

In the mountains, individuals were taking measurements with various instruments, preparing schemes, striving for maximum efficiency while ensuring safety.

By the time Wen Yan arrived, the place was already bustling with activity.

Even when he entered the mountain from the village to find the few mountains forming a semicircle, people were already there, also taking measurements.

Others had instruments Wen Yan couldn’t understand, pressing them against the mountain, watching the computer display the mountain structure diagram, discussing how to arrange the blasting points.

Wen Yan didn’t bother them or speak, merely confirming his identity upon entering, then wandered around aimlessly.

Looking at the mountain before him, he found the entrance to the cave, which had already collapsed.

He climbed to the summit, sat on the mountaintop, patted it, lit a cigarette, and stuck it in the mountain.

”Here, give it a try. I took a puff for you; soon, you won’t even have this.”

Wen Yan looked down, feeling the changes in the aura here. The Mountain Ghost had completely merged with the mountain, lost its Mystical Realm, and had its title stripped. Now, apart from so-called immortality, it could do nothing.

Everything seemed like a fresh start.

”When you were sealed, you probably tried similar things many times, didn’t you?

But did you ever consider you would have your mountain roots excavated and your earth veins destroyed?

Did you also never expect Old Master Wang would decisively use your power to help you dissolve the sealing voluntarily?

Don’t you want to know who invited me here back then?

To tell you the truth, it was probably Old Master Wang who invited me.

What’s sealed inside is just a part of Old Master Wang from the past.

You, this Melon Peel, probably can’t understand.

You should be able to sense those so-called ordinary people outside, right?

They’ve come to see your ultimate demise.

Do you not care about them at all?”

Wen Yan sat on the mountain top, watching the cigarette stuck in the ground, its smoke drifting away, clearly showing the Mountain Ghost’s unappreciation, disliking something he’d already tried.

”Such ingratitude, not taking what you’re given.

In that case, since there’s nothing to do, let me tell you a story.”
