I Am Your Natural Enemy

By the way, this also lets people outside know it’s not that you don’t want revenge, it’s that you got caught and can’t go.

”They’re not gonna believe that.”

”What, you think they’ll assume the Scorching Sun Department is putting on a show with you? Scorching Sun isn’t gonna trash its own reputation like that. Back when Cai Heizi was still around, maybe he’d have played along a bit.”

”Uh? You’re not really gonna have me arrested, are you?”

”You are really going to be arrested. Given your ability, to prevent you from running, you’ll one hundred percent be assigned to that detention center.

Everything will be by the book.

As for the trial after you’re temporarily locked up, I can guarantee your priority’s going to be very low—too many cases.

Who knows when they’ll finally get around to yours.”

Old Meng suddenly got it. He’d been drifting outside so long he’d almost forgotten there are things you can do but can’t say.

For all he knew, by the time he got out he might even collect ten or twenty thousand in compensation...

At least on paper, in terms of procedure, everything was perfectly fine.

”I just think you need to let the bullets fly for a while. Don’t be in such a rush. I honestly feel like you’ve started falling into their rhythm, and that’s deadly.”

Old Meng stayed silent for a long time, then nodded.

”Alright, I’ll leave this old buddy of mine in your care then.”

”Got it. Anything else you need me to cooperate with?”

”No. Just pretend you never saw me, and let everything follow normal procedure.”

Old Meng turned and left, riding off on that busted tricycle until he vanished.

Only ten minutes later, in a spot in the Yuzhou Suburb, Old Meng rode his tricycle and fell out of the Void.

He hit the ground, covered in blood; the tricycle turned into a faint streak of light and vanished.

Only one man and one dog were lying there on the ground.

A few minutes later, some people out for a late-night snack passed by, saw Old Meng covered in blood, got a fright, and immediately called the police.

Another ten-plus minutes and Old Meng was sent to the hospital. He had no ID, but they ran facial recognition, and once he was identified, his information was automatically reported.

Because technically, even though Old Meng wasn’t an A-level wanted criminal for some heinous case, he was still in the absconded fugitive category.

Ten minutes after that, people from the Scorching Sun Department showed up.

They confirmed Old Meng’s identity, and also confirmed the dog’s identity.

The hospital’s tests showed multiple injuries all over Old Meng’s body, severe blood loss, they couldn’t even draw blood—could only scrape a bit off his wounds.

One of his ribs was broken, his organs were damaged; it was like he’d been hit by a dump truck.

Even the dog was in a deep coma.

Twenty minutes later, Feng Yao rushed to the scene. He read the current diagnosis, got a scare, and quickly called Wen Yan.

Feng Yao rattled off everything that had happened, laying out the situation.

”What the hell is going on? What do we do now?”

”Boss, are you the leader or am I?

You’re asking me?

You know what his identity is. We handle him however he’s supposed to be handled. You expecting me to plead for a criminal?

Sure, we’re personally acquainted, but so what? Worst case, he goes in, and I’ll visit him with some supplies and cigarettes.”

Feng Yao held the phone a bit away from his ear, listening to Wen Yan’s righteously indignant tone, a hint of confusion in his eyes.

But as he kept listening, he started to hear what was really going on.

”Mm, let me ask you something—did you finish examining that thing I had you appraise?”

”Yeah, it’s done.”

”Good. Then we’re fine.”

Feng Yao jabbed a finger at his screen and slammed the call shut.

He didn’t really get what kind of show Wen Yan and Old Meng were putting on, but it didn’t matter.

All he needed to know was that Old Meng had already examined the item and had met Wen Yan.

That was enough for him to know how to keep acting out this play.

In a major hospital in Yu State, as long as Old Meng hadn’t bled out his last breath, there was no way he was going to die.

Early the next morning, the doctors confirmed Old Meng was out of danger, already awake, his Recovery Speed far exceeding expectations, no longer in any life-threatening condition, and agreed to transfer him.

The people from the Scorching Sun Department, following procedure, took Old Meng to one of their small affiliated hospitals for him to recuperate.

Because security there was strict enough to guarantee Old Meng couldn’t run.

As for the dog, per Old Meng’s own wishes, it was sent to Wen Yan to be boarded.

The next night, someone contacted a nurse from the hospital that had done Old Meng’s emergency care, probing and leading her along until the little nurse started talking about Old Meng.

The little nurse wasn’t exactly guarded. She didn’t mention any names, just thought she was sharing an odd story, and started talking about the miracle patient they’d admitted that day.

Like he’d been hit by a dump truck, and also like he’d been hacked a dozen times. When he came in he was on the brink of death, with estimated blood loss of at least a thousand milliliters.

But unexpectedly, without any transfusion, after just one night the patient had recovered more than half, even had some color back in his face.

In the end, the patient was taken away by his ”uncle,” probably some kind of fugitive.

Half an hour later, some people in Nanyang had already heard the news.

Last night, Old Meng ran into an ambush and kind of crashed the car. In the end he barely managed to fight his way back to the Divine Land, probably had a Curse flare up that knocked him out by the roadside. Then he was sent to a hospital, and when the hospital confirmed his identity, it triggered an alarm and brought in the Scorching Sun Department.

On the top floor of a high-rise in Nanyang, a young man read the freshly delivered intel, his face dark.

”Is it verified?”

”Basically confirmed,” an old man beside him answered in a low voice.

”Those useless idiots from yesterday managed to hurt Old Meng?”

”It should be the result of those two masters who made a move a couple days ago. He couldn’t suppress it anymore, and when he fought those assassins yesterday, it erupted. All the symptoms line up.

Our people checked too. Those assassins were basically all killed with weapons.

There was some of Old Meng’s blood left at the scene, but he did something to it, so it can’t be used.

All of this has been verified by people we sent.”

The young man set the intel down, his face turning a shade uglier.

He hadn’t expected Old Meng to crash like this, nor that the Sorcerer’s strength seemed to be greater than anticipated, leaving Old Meng a bit stretched thin.

”Pass the word down. Figure something out and get him out of there as soon as possible.”
