Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 222: Chapter 222: Two Months

Wukong sat on his cliff watching the gathered beings sort themselves out across the constructed planet.

The catching-up had wound down naturally over the course of the day — conversations reaching their natural ends, old silences refilling, the particular restlessness that settles into a gathering of powerful beings when they’ve finished talking and haven’t yet decided what to do next. It was moving through the crowd in visible waves. People looking at the wormhole. People looking at each other. People looking at the open plain beyond the cliff.

Ares looked at the wormhole for about forty seconds before he said anything.

”I’m going through.”

He said it the way he said most things — not as a proposal or a suggestion but as an announcement of something already decided. He was looking at the wormhole’s glow on the horizon and his expression had the particular quality it got when he had identified a direction and intended to move in it.

Poseidon looked at the wormhole. Then at Ares. ”I’ll come.”

Two of the dragon sovereigns exchanged a look and moved without speaking. A pair of ancient cultivators who had been standing nearby and had apparently reached the same conclusion fell in behind them.

Six of them, walking toward the wormhole with the collective energy of beings who had made a decision and were not entertaining alternatives.

Several others watched them go. Nobody stopped them. There was a general sense in the gathering that if Ares had decided something was happening, the most efficient response was to wait and see what interrupted him.

They crossed the plain, reached the wormhole’s edge, and stepped in.

The tunnel was vast — light years across, silver-gold walls steady and permanent around them. They moved through it without difficulty, their pace unhurried, the other universe visible ahead as a destination rather than a memory.

They made it halfway through.

Then everything stopped.

Not slowed. Not resisted. Stopped — a complete cessation of forward movement that didn’t involve any physical barrier or visible force. Just a will pressing against theirs so completely that continuing required more than any of them were prepared to spend on what had been a fairly casual decision.

William’s presence filled the tunnel.

Cold. Absolute. The same presence that had halted an entire solar system mid-migration, now applied to six beings who had walked into his domain without asking. It carried no particular anger. It didn’t need to. It simply was, the way a wall simply is — not hostile, just completely immovable.

He held them there.

Long enough for the point to land. Long enough for each of them to push against it instinctively and find exactly nothing.

Ares pushed harder than the others, because that was Ares. He got the same result.

Then William spoke. One sentence, no particular emphasis.

”The exchange has a start date. You cross then.”

”And if we cross now?” Ares asked.

”Then you arrive alone,” William said, ”without the rest of your universe behind you, into mine.”

The silence that followed had a specific quality. The kind that meant people were doing arithmetic.

Poseidon, who was not stupid despite how he was sometimes portrayed, said nothing. The two dragon sovereigns exchanged another look. The ancient cultivators were very still.

Ares pushed against the hold one more time — not seriously, more the final instinctive resistance of someone accepting a boundary they’d decided to accept — and then stopped.

William released them.

They drifted backward through the tunnel without quite meaning to and emerged on the constructed planet’s side, the wormhole’s light unchanged behind them, indifferent to what had just happened.

The gathered beings who had been watching from various points across the landscape were quiet.

Odin spoke first. ”How strong is he?” Not to Wukong. To anyone with an answer.

Nobody responded immediately. The honest answer required thinking carefully and the conclusion that produced was not comfortable.

Thoth said quietly from the edge of the gathering: ”Stronger than anything we’ve encountered. By a significant margin.”

Athena nodded once. She had been running the numbers from the moment William’s presence entered the tunnel.

Thor was looking at the wormhole with his jaw set. Not frustrated. Something else — the expression of someone who had just been handed a problem worth solving.

”Two months,” he said.

”Two months,” Wukong confirmed from his cliff. ”Use them.”

---

The fighters’ decision to actually train was, in retrospect, inevitable. The William incident had simply accelerated the timeline.

Within an hour of the six returning from the wormhole, the combat-oriented portion of the gathering had begun drifting toward the open plain beyond the cliff — the largest clear space on the constructed planet, flat and wide and apparently suitable. The logic was simple: they needed to prepare, they prepared by fighting, the open plain was there.

Wukong watched this development from his cliff with the specific attention of someone who could see exactly where it was going.

He was off the cliff and in front of them before the first exchange of power had left anyone’s hands.

”No,” he said.

Ares stopped. ”We’re training.”

”Not here you’re not.”

”There’s plenty of space.” Ares gestured at the plain. It was, objectively, very large.

”There is not,” Wukong said, ”nearly enough space. Not for this. If you fight here at full power —” he paused and looked out at the horizon, doing a brief mental calculation, ”— this galaxy is gone. The three neighboring ones take serious damage. Everything within that radius ceases to exist, including this planet, including all of us.”

”Bold of you to assume we’d damage you,” Thor said.

”Bold of you to assume you wouldn’t,” Wukong said pleasantly.

A moment of consideration passed through the combat group.

”A contained space then,” Erlang Shen said. Practical, cutting to the solution. ”Mind space.”

”Yes,” Wukong said.

”We know about mind space,” Ares said. Every being present at or above a certain level knew about mind space — the ancient technique of constructing a shared mental dimension where power could be exerted without physical consequence, where the limits came from your own cultivation depth rather than the structural integrity of reality around you. It had existed longer than most of the gods. They all knew it. ”We just didn’t want to bother creating it.”

”I know,” Wukong said.

”It’s more effort than it’s worth when you could just fight outside.”

”Except you can’t fight outside.”

Ares looked at the plain. Looked at Wukong. Looked at the plain again with the expression of someone genuinely weighing whether the destruction of several galaxies was an acceptable cost for the convenience of not having to construct a mental space.

”Fine,” he said.

---

Wukong opened the mind space.

He didn’t make a production of it. He closed his eyes for three seconds and when he opened them the entrance was there — a vertical seam in the air, simple and clean, leading somewhere that had no physical location. He stepped through first to demonstrate and waited on the other side.

They came through in waves. The combat-oriented ones first, fast and eager. The academic ones more slowly, out of curiosity. Even a few of the beings who had spent the day in quiet conversation drifted through eventually, because there is a kind of gathering where you can tell early that all roads lead to the same place, and this was one of those.

The mind space itself was vast. That was the first thing — the scale of it, the sense of distance between points that didn’t correspond to any physical reality. The sky, if you could call it that, was a deep even darkness that wasn’t hostile, just neutral. The ground was solid underfoot but didn’t look like anything in particular. It was a space that existed specifically to be fought in, and it communicated this immediately.

Inside it, the restrictions came off.

Not all at once. Gradually, as the assembled beings began to test the space and found it holding — absorbing their output without complaint, registering force without consequence, returning nothing except the pure information of the exchange. The first tentative outputs became less tentative. Then they stopped being tentative at all.

The mind space filled with combat.

Thor and Erlang Shen picked up their interrupted conversation from earlier and moved it to the obvious conclusion. Their exchange was clean and fast and mutual — each one calibrating, finding the edges, learning the other’s system through contact rather than observation. They had been talking about technique for hours. This was the part that actually mattered.

Two dragon sovereigns who had old business between them resolved it in the corner of the space that everyone else quietly vacated. The exchange between them was less clean and more serious and lasted significantly longer. When it ended both of them were breathing hard and looked more satisfied than either had in a very long time.

Ares fought everyone who would have him, which was most people because fighting Ares at full power was genuinely informative regardless of the outcome. He was not subtle and he was not strategic, but he was overwhelming in a way that required specific preparation to handle and nobody had prepared specifically for him in centuries. Several beings discovered that their current approach had significant gaps. They were annoyed about this and immediately more motivated.

The academic contingent — Thoth, Athena, and a handful of the ancient cultivators who had spent more time studying than fighting — entered the mind space and spent the first hour observing rather than participating. Athena lasted forty minutes before she entered an exchange with one of the cultivators, which was longer than Thoth expected her to last in observation mode. Thoth himself lasted another twenty minutes before he set aside his notes and entered one himself.

Odin fought no one immediately. He moved through the mind space watching, his single eye reading every exchange with the comprehensive attention that was his particular gift. He was building a picture — cataloguing styles, systems, gaps, approaches. When he did eventually enter an exchange it was deliberate and specific, chosen to test something he had identified from observation.

Jesus watched from the edge of the mind space for a long time. Guanyin stood beside him. They watched Ares flatten three consecutive opponents with the straightforward brutality that Ares brought to everything, and then watched the third opponent get up and come back with an adjusted approach that worked better than the first.

”He learns from it,” Guanyin observed.

”They all do,” Jesus said. ”That’s why they came.”

Wukong moved through it all — fighting when someone engaged him, observing when they didn’t, pushing his own output steadily higher as the session went on. He was not the strongest being in the mind space and he was honest enough with himself to know it. What he was doing was using the gap — finding the people who exceeded him and staying in contact with them long enough to learn something.

The breakthrough was close. He could feel the edges of it clearly now. Two months was not long but it was not nothing either.

He pushed.

Outside, on the constructed planet, the surface was quiet. The ocean moved in the patterns Poseidon had adjusted. The sky held its unfamiliar stars. The wormhole glowed on the horizon, steady and permanent.

The mind space ran silently inside all of it, containing a war that would have ended several galaxies if it had been fought anywhere real.

---

On the other side of the wormhole, in the testing dimension, Runar was in his training space.

He had booked it indefinitely at this point. The academy had not questioned this. When someone at his level and current trajectory said they needed a space for an extended period, the appropriate response was to give them the space.

The room was quiet. He was sitting cross-legged in the center of it, eyes closed, the Myriad Genesis Eye running at a low steady depth, and all of his attention directed inward.

He had a plan.

It was not a modest plan.

The Universal Realm was the immediate threshold — the step that every cultivator at his level was building toward, the obvious next destination. Reaching it would mean crossing from the peak of what this universe’s system recognized as mortal cultivation into something categorically beyond. For most practitioners it was the work of decades or centuries of careful preparation. For someone at Runar’s current level, with his Rule count and his merged soul and his galaxy-level cellular base, it was closer than that.

But Runar was not planning to stop at Universal Realm.

The logic was straightforward once you understood the structure. Universal Realm meant what it said — a universe inside you, a universal seed blooming into a universal tree, your internal space becoming something that operated by its own laws. That was the first crossing. Most people who reached it spent the rest of their existence exploring what that meant.

Runar intended to use it as a platform.

The second crossing — from Universal to Multiversal — required two internal universes merging. The explosion of that merger, if the foundation was strong enough, if the cellular base was stable enough, if the Rules were deep enough to survive the pressure — that explosion carried you through. Two major realms in a single movement, skipping the decades of consolidation that most Universal beings spent before attempting the next step.

It had been done before, in theory. He had found references to it in sources that Gaia and Rene had compiled, records from cultivation traditions that predated the current academy’s founding. Nobody he knew of had done it recently. Nobody he knew of had the specific combination of factors that made it viable.

He did.

The problem was energy.

The energy requirement for what he was planning was not large in the way that large things were usually described. It was large in the way that made description feel inadequate. Every single cell in his body needed to reach galaxy-level power individually. Not the body as a whole. Each cell, independently, operating at a scale that most cultivators spent lifetimes trying to reach as an overall threshold.

He had been gathering for a month.

He was not close enough yet.

He knew this clearly and without frustration. Frustration required expecting something to be different from what it was, and he had never expected this to be fast. He had expected it to be exactly what it was — a long, steady accumulation that required patience and consistency and the willingness to keep pushing every variable he could control while accepting the ones he couldn’t.

The quantum chip ran continuously in the background, tracking the progress across every cell, flagging the clusters advancing fastest, identifying the bottlenecks. The Myriad Genesis Eye maintained its low-level scan, watching the Rules deepen. The numbers moved. Slowly, but they moved.

He was aware of the exchange in the back of his mind the way you’re aware of a deadline — present, relevant, not yet urgent. Two months. He might be ready by then. He might not. Either way the exchange would happen and he would be wherever he was when it did.

He had no intention of rushing the preparation for something this size because of a deadline.

He pulled more energy in and kept going.

---

Celestia sensed the scale of what he was building toward the same way she sensed most things about him — not through the soul link directly, but through the quality of his presence in it. Something vast and accumulating. The feeling of standing near a dam that was still being filled.

She said nothing about it directly. She knew what he was planning in general terms and she trusted his read on what it required. What she did instead was train harder herself, because the exchange was two months away regardless of anything else and she intended to be ready for it.

Cassia and Nyla had settled into the academy with the adaptability that people who had survived difficult things tended to develop. Cassia had already identified the key teachers, the most useful resources, the fastest paths to what they needed. Nyla had found three cultivators she considered genuine sparring partners and was working through them systematically.

They checked in with Runar when he surfaced. He surfaced once a day, sometimes less. The check-ins were brief — he was fine, the preparation was progressing, they should keep doing what they were doing. Then he went back.

They kept doing what they were doing.

The energy continued to gather. The cells continued to climb. The Rules deepened another fraction.

Two months. Everyone preparing in their own way, on both sides of a permanent bridge between universes, for something that had never happened before and would change everything after it did.

The exchange was coming.
