Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 219: Chapter 219: Ripples

One month had passed since the solar system completed its migration.

The wormhole remained where it had stabilized — permanent, steady, its silver-gold light visible from anywhere in the testing dimension’s outer range. Both Universal Wills had embedded themselves into its foundation. It wasn’t going anywhere.

Life around it had already begun to normalize. That was the thing about even the most extraordinary events — given enough time, people incorporated them into the background and moved on to the next concern. The wormhole was now simply a feature of existence. Something you could point to and say, ”That’s where the other universe is,” and then go back to whatever you were doing.

What people could not normalize, one month in, was the publications.

The first one appeared seventeen days after the migration. It was posted simultaneously across every major academic and cultivation network under two names: Gaia and Rene.

Gaia everyone knew. The Universal AI of the Human Race had been a constant presence in the academic world for as long as most cultivators could remember — authoritative, precise, occasionally releasing analyses or cultivation guidance that reshaped how people approached certain Laws. Seeing her name on a publication was not unusual.

Seeing the second name was.

Rene.

Nobody knew who Rene was. The publication itself gave no biography, no institutional affiliation, no cultivation realm or background. Just the name, attached to work that — when the academic community sat down and actually read it — turned out to be among the most significant theoretical releases in recent memory.

The first paper was a hybrid framework combining mechanical system design with cultivation intent layering. It proposed that the relationship between technology and cultivation was not supplementary but foundational — that intent, properly structured, could be embedded into mechanical systems in a way that made the technology itself a cultivation medium. The paper included six complete technique templates and three theoretical extensions that the authors noted they had not yet tested.

Within four days, practitioners had tested two of them. Both worked.

The second publication came five days after the first. Then a third. Then two in the same week. Each one landed in a different area — spatial theory, soul cultivation, body tempering, formation architecture — and each one carried the same dual authorship.

The academic community had been in a low-grade state of frenzy ever since.

”She has to be an AI,” a senior formation instructor at the academy said, standing in front of a study group that had formed specifically to analyze the publications. ”The processing depth here, the cross-domain synthesis — no single cultivator produces work across this many fields at this speed. It’s not possible.”

”Gaia is an AI,” one of the students pointed out.

”Exactly. So the question is what kind of system Rene is. A second model? A parallel architecture? Something built specifically to interface with Gaia’s existing knowledge base and expand it?”

”A peer system,” another student offered. ”Built to operate alongside Gaia. Equal footing, different specialization.”

The instructor considered this. ”That fits the output pattern. Gaia’s contributions in these papers tend toward cultivation depth. Rene’s tend toward structural and systemic thinking. They’re complementary.”

This became the dominant theory within two weeks. Rene was a second AI, purpose-built to work alongside Gaia, and whoever had commissioned her construction had done so at a level of technical sophistication that the academic community could only guess at.

They were not close to the truth. They didn’t know it.

An elder from one of the older sects published a formal objection — not to the content of the papers, which he acknowledged were sound, but to the principle of AIs generating cultivation theory at all. His argument was that cultivation was a deeply personal journey of comprehension, and reducing it to algorithmic output degraded something fundamental about the process.

Gaia responded within six hours with a paper specifically addressing his objection, co-authored with Rene. It was both a thorough rebuttal and, in the opinion of most who read it, considerably more interesting than the original objection.

The elder did not respond further.

Runar read all of it from a comfortable distance and said nothing publicly. He had checked in with both AIs at the two-week mark and received a summary of their collaborative output that had made him sit quietly for longer than he usually sat quietly for anything.

They had been busy.

On the other side of the wormhole, William had also not been idle.

He waited exactly three weeks after the migration before making his announcement. Not because he needed the time to prepare — the words took no preparation — but because he had spent those three weeks observing how his universe’s population was processing the faint dimensional disturbance they had all felt when the wormhole stabilized. He wanted to know what conclusions they were reaching on their own before he told them anything.

The combat-oriented majority had mostly concluded that something powerful had opened a door nearby and that this was either a threat or an opportunity, and either way they wanted to be ready. Training intensity had gone up measurably across every major sect and combat institution in his universe within days of the wormhole’s completion. Nobody had told them to do this. They had simply looked at the evidence and made the obvious decision.

The academic minority had been publishing theoretical papers about dimensional bridge mechanics and cross-universal energy transfer within a week. Their conclusions were largely correct. Several of them had independently deduced that the wormhole was permanent and bidirectional.

William observed all of this with satisfaction.

Then he made his announcement.

It arrived in every mind in the universe simultaneously, the way Universal Will communications always did — direct, impossible to miss, carrying the particular weight of something that comes from the animating consciousness of your entire reality.

There is a permanent wormhole now connecting this universe to another. In two months, a formal inter-universal exchange will begin. Combat competitions. Dao discussions. Cross-universal battles and tournaments. Prepare accordingly.

That was the entirety of it.

No ceremony. No extended explanation. No encouragement or caution.

The response was immediate and, in the case of the combat majority, extremely loud.

In one of the largest sect cities, a training ground that had been running at high intensity for three weeks simply erupted. Cultivators who had been sparring stopped and looked at each other, and then several of them started talking at the same time.

”Combat competitions.”

”Cross-universal battles.”

”Two months.”

Someone in the back of the ground let out a sound that was somewhere between a shout and a roar, and within seconds half the training ground had joined in. The noise carried three streets in every direction.

In a quieter district of the same city, an academic hall went silent when the announcement arrived, and then immediately became the opposite of silent as every scholar in the building started talking over every other scholar. New Laws. New Principles. Knowledge structures that didn’t exist in their current system. The implications were stacking faster than any of them could process individually.

One older scholar sat in the corner of the hall with his eyes closed while everyone around him argued, a faint smile on his face.

He had been studying dimensional theory for four hundred years.

He had a lot of questions.

William observed his universe’s reaction and felt something he hadn’t felt in a very long time.

He was looking forward to the next two months.

On Earth — or what had been Earth’s location, now sitting in its new position in the testing dimension — Wukong made another planet and stood at the edge of a cliff overlooking a landscape that had shifted slightly in the transit but remained fundamentally itself. The mountains were where the mountains had always been. The air tasted the same.

He had been training. He was always training now, the breakthrough pressing closer every week, the gap between where he stood and the next realm thinning in a way he could feel clearly. He wasn’t going anywhere until it happened.

But there was something he had been putting off for a month, and he had decided today was the day.

He sat down cross-legged on the cliff edge, closed his eyes, and reached.

The channel was old. Ancient enough that the concept of age stopped meaning much when applied to it. It had been established in a time before most current cultivation systems existed, by beings who needed a way to communicate across distances and dimensions that ordinary methods couldn’t bridge. It had never been formally closed because nobody had ever gotten around to formally closing it, and because the beings who used it tended to exist long enough that ”we’ll deal with that later” eventually meant never.

Wukong knew exactly how to open it. He had been one of the ones who helped build it.

He pushed his spiritual power into the channel and felt it light up — dormant connections activating one after another like lanterns being lit along a road, reaching across space and time, across dimensional barriers, across distances that had accumulated over centuries of separation.

A long silence. Then, all at once, voices.

Who opened this line?

Is this channel still active? I assumed it had collapsed millions of years ago.

Wukong. That one landed with immediate recognition. It has to be Wukong. Nobody else would just turn this on without warning.

Sun Wukong, if this is you, I am in the middle of something.

I’m here. A deeper voice, carrying the particular resonance of something very old and very large. What is this about?

More voices joining. Some recognizing each other across the shared channel, greetings exchanged with the specific quality of people who hadn’t spoken in a very long time and weren’t sure how to calibrate the distance.

Thor? Is that you?

It’s been — how long has it been?

Long.

Did anyone else receive the universal announcement? The one about the inter-universal exchange?

I received it.

We all received it. What does it mean exactly? A permanent wormhole between universes —

Where is the wormhole? That question, from several directions at once.

Wukong let them run for another minute. He sat on his cliff and listened to centuries of silence being broken all at once, old voices finding each other across a channel that had been dormant so long most of the universe had forgotten it existed.

Then he spoke.

”The wormhole.” His voice cut cleanly through the rest. ”It’s at Earth.”

Silence.

”Our Earth,” he continued. ”The solar system migrated through it. That’s where it anchors on this side. Right where home used to be. Right where home is now.”

Another beat of silence. Longer this time.

You’re serious.

”When am I not serious.”

Frequently, at least three voices said simultaneously.

”The exchange is in two months,” Wukong said. ”I have information on what’s on the other side. Come if you want it.”

He cut the call.

The channel went dark.

In a frozen mountain range at the edge of a remote continent, a figure sitting in deep meditation opened his eyes for the first time in sixty years. Snow drifted around him undisturbed. He sat still for a long moment, looking at nothing.

Then he stood.

In the deep ocean, far below the light threshold, something vast and old shifted in the dark water and began moving toward the surface and then upward, toward the location it had stored in memory a very long time ago.

In a dimension adjacent to the physical world, a being made mostly of golden light paused in the middle of something it had been doing for three centuries and looked toward the direction the call had come from.

Earth, it thought.

It had not thought about Earth in a long time.

It began to move.

In a mountain monastery so remote it appeared on no map, an old man set down his tea, looked out the window at the afternoon sky, and said to the younger monk sitting across from him, ”We’re going to have visitors soon.”

The younger monk looked up. ”From where?”

The old man picked his tea back up. ”Everywhere.”
