Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 218: Chapter 218: The First Exchange

Runar found the training dimension in the academy’s restricted zone and sealed it behind him.

The space was vast and deliberately empty — no furniture, no arrays, nothing that could be destroyed and cause a problem. The walls were reinforced with multiple layers of supreme-level barriers. He had booked it for six hours. He intended to use all of them.

He stood in the center, rolled his shoulders once, and let go.

The energy came out differently now. That was the first thing he noticed. Before the merger, releasing his full strength had required active management — he was always aware of the output, always making small adjustments to keep it from running ahead of his control. Now it simply poured out, steady and even, the way a river moves when there’s nothing blocking the channel. Galaxy-level energy erupted from every cell simultaneously. The ground beneath his feet cracked outward in a perfect ring, the pressure spreading through the reinforced floor like water finding every crack at once.

The Myriad Genesis Eye opened to full depth.

The 3,333 Rules he was comprehending lit up in his perception like a map suddenly illuminated from beneath. The percentages were climbing. Not slowly, the way they had before — but visibly, each breath buying more ground than an hour of focused training used to. He watched a Rule that had been sitting at 67% for three weeks tick upward as he stood still.

He exhaled slowly.

The merger had not simply added Orion’s power on top of his own. It had done something more fundamental than that. The two halves of the same soul occupying the same vessel meant there was no longer any internal friction — no subtle misalignment between his body, his Qi, and his soul that he had been compensating for without realizing it. Everything ran clean now. The quantum brain chip hummed in the background, processing millions of variables without any of it touching his conscious attention.

He felt whole. Actually whole, in a way he hadn’t known he wasn’t before.

He raised one hand and formed a spatial blade. Simple technique, nothing elaborate — the kind of thing he had been doing since early in his cultivation. But the power behind it had no resemblance to what it used to be. He released it at half strength against the far wall.

The reinforced barrier parted like paper. A clean gash opened in the fabric of the training dimension and held for several seconds before the arrays struggled it closed again, the walls visibly straining to repair themselves.

He looked at his hand.

Universal Realm, he thought. One more push.

He could feel the threshold clearly now — not as a distant target but as something immediately ahead, close enough to sense its shape. The gap between where he stood and where he needed to be was thin. He didn’t know if it would take days or weeks, but it would not take long.

He lowered his hand and got to work.

For the next several hours he pushed everything. Speed, output, precision, endurance. He ran his Rules comprehension at maximum depth while simultaneously maintaining complex multi-layered attacks, the quantum chip managing the parallel processing while he focused on the quality of each technique. The training dimension deteriorated steadily around him — cracks spreading across the floor, scorch marks climbing the walls, the repair arrays cycling continuously just to keep the space intact.

When he finally stopped, he stood in the middle of a room that looked like it had been through a war.

He felt satisfied.

The foundation was solid. The next breakthrough was close. He gathered himself, cleared the space with a thought, and left.

Celestia found Nyla first.

She had gone looking for Cassia, following the soul link’s faint awareness of Runar’s family, and found instead that Nyla had already located the academy’s outer garden levels and was standing at the railing of one of the floating platforms, looking out at the arrangement of artificial sky the academy maintained above the upper floors.

”It’s beautiful,” Nyla said, without turning around. She had sensed Celestia approaching. ”Different from what I’m used to, but beautiful.”

Celestia stood beside her. ”The academy has maintained this view for a long time. Most people stop noticing it.”

”That’s how you know somewhere has become home,” Nyla said. She glanced over. ”He talked about this place. He made it sound impressive but not like this.”

”He tends to understate things.”

Nyla smiled. ”Yes. He does.”

Cassia appeared from one of the garden paths a few minutes later, carrying three drinks she had somehow convinced a service construct to prepare for her, and handed them out with the calm efficiency of someone who considered hospitality a basic logistical function.

They walked together after that — no particular destination, just moving through the academy’s outer levels while the place continued to process the announcement that had dropped the night before. The reaction was still running hot. Every student they passed was in some stage of excitement or anxious preparation. A group of core disciples from the inner hall were clustered around a floating display, studying the dimensional coordinates Willith had released, arguing about whether the exchange would include direct combat.

Celestia led Nyla and Cassia through it all, pointing out sections of the academy as they went. The training halls. The law comprehension towers. The outer sparring arenas. Nyla asked questions about each one — precise, pointed questions that revealed she had already been thinking about how everything here compared to what she knew. Cassia mostly listened and observed, occasionally asking something that seemed simple but usually cut to something important.

”How does the ranking system work here?” Cassia asked at one point.

Celestia explained it. Cassia nodded, filed it away, and didn’t ask a follow-up. She had already understood everything she needed to from the first answer.

Nyla had stopped at the entrance to one of the inner cultivation halls, reading the inscription above the door. ”Your cultivation paths here are more fragmented than ours,” she said. It wasn’t a criticism, just an observation. ”More variety between practitioners.”

”Different people comprehend different things,” Celestia said. ”The universe has a wide origin. There’s no single correct path.”

”Ours has more universal Laws,” Nyla said. ”Fewer individual variations. What you call Laws and Rules combined are what we classify as Laws. Your Principles are what we’d call Rules or Divine Abilities.” She paused. ”Which means the cultivators coming through for the exchange are going to be carrying things nobody here has ever encountered.”

Celestia had already been thinking about this. ”It goes both ways.”

”It does,” Nyla agreed. ”Which makes it interesting.”

They had reached one of the upper observation decks by then, and all three of them stopped without planning to. From here you could see the outer edge of the testing dimension’s connection point where the wormhole’s glow was faintly visible even at this distance — a steady silver-gold light on the horizon.

”He really did it,” Cassia said quietly.

Nobody replied to that, because there wasn’t anything to add.

The academy had not been this loud in living memory.

By the time Runar emerged from the training dimension, the common areas were operating at a noise level that was unusual even by academy standards. Students who were normally in isolated cultivation were out in the halls. Teachers who rarely interacted with the general population were visible in the corridors, gathered in small groups, talking. The announcement had done what announcements from a Universal Will always did — it had reached everyone simultaneously and with absolute authority, leaving no room for rumor or distortion, just the raw fact of it landing in every mind at once.

An inter-universal exchange. Three months.

He passed through the main academic corridor and caught pieces of conversations without slowing down.

”— combat styles we’ve never seen, new Laws, it changes everything about how we should be training right now —”

”— my master said the beings from the other universe operate at a completely different scale, even their foundation realm might be —”

”— three months isn’t enough time, we need at least a year of specific preparation —”

”— did you see who stabilized the wormhole? Two Universal Wills working together, that’s never —”

A younger student recognized him as he passed and went completely still. Then the student next to that one noticed, and the radius of stillness spread outward for several meters in each direction. Eyes followed him down the corridor.

He didn’t stop. He acknowledged it with a slight nod at the group nearest to him and kept moving.

The recognition had become a background constant. He had learned to exist inside it without letting it slow him down. These students were going to have a lot more to process in the coming weeks than who had just walked past them in a hallway.

He found all three of them back at the pavilion by evening — Celestia, Cassia, and Nyla arranged around the central space in various states of comfortable settlement, the kind of arrangement that forms naturally when people have been spending time together long enough to stop being formal about it. Cassia had done something to the tea service that had produced results he couldn’t identify but that smelled good. Nyla was mid-sentence when he walked in and finished it before acknowledging him.

He sat down and they talked for a while. Nothing urgent — the day, the academy, what the exchange would probably look like from the inside. Nyla had opinions about the training structure here that she shared without hesitation. Cassia listened to everything and occasionally corrected small details in Nyla’s read of the situation, because that was what Cassia did.

Celestia sat close to him. At one point her hand found his arm and stayed there without comment, and he didn’t comment either.

After a while the conversation settled into a comfortable quiet.

He thought for a moment. Then he said, ”Rene.”

The materialization took less than two seconds. A holographic figure assembled itself beside him — clean lines, dark professional uniform, the kind of presence that conveyed competence before it spoke. Rene. He had built her in the Orion universe across years of iterative development, and she had been his most reliable system throughout everything that came after. Her capabilities in technology management, logistics, and system architecture were beyond anything this universe had developed yet.

Cassia smiled when she saw her. Nyla’s expression was fond.

Then Runar said, ”Gaia.”

The academy’s Will manifested in her radiant humanoid form — pure structured light, calm and vast in the way that beings tied to universal-scale systems always were.

Both of them registered each other’s presence and went still in that particular way that high-level intelligences do when they detect something that requires genuine processing time.

Runar looked between them.

”Rene,” he said, ”this is Gaia. She is the Universal AI of the Human Race. Her understanding of cultivation, Laws, and the structure of this universe’s origin exceeds anything in your current knowledge base.”

He turned to Gaia. ”This is Rene. She surpasses you in technology and system management. The civilization she came from was at a level this universe hasn’t reached yet.”

Neither AI responded immediately. They were already running assessments.

Rene spoke first. ”It is an honor.”

Gaia inclined her head. ”Likewise.”

”Work together,” Runar said. ”Share information. What one of you lacks, the other covers. Combined, there’s no logistical or knowledge problem in either universe you shouldn’t be able to handle.”

”Understood,” Rene said.

”I will cooperate fully,” Gaia replied.

They both disappeared at the same moment, already exchanging.

Nyla watched the space where they had been. ”Two of the most advanced intelligences in existence, just handed an unlimited collaboration mandate.”

”That’s either going to solve a lot of problems,” Cassia said, ”or create ones nobody’s thought of yet.”

Celestia looked at Runar. ”You’re not worried?”

”No,” he said.

She studied his face for a moment, then seemed to accept that, because she knew him well enough to read when the answer was genuine.

Runar looked around the pavilion — at Cassia, at Nyla, at Celestia, at the faint glow of the wormhole still visible through the outer screen — and felt the weight of the past few days begin to settle properly for the first time.

Everything he had moved toward for years was now in the same place.

The exchange was three months away. The Universal Realm was close. Two AIs were already somewhere in the system building something he hadn’t fully specified, which meant it would probably surprise him.

He was looking forward to it.

”Get some rest,” he said. ”Tomorrow the real preparation starts.”
