High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2370: Chapter 591: At Breakfast

Early the next morning.

Greenhill Mansion’s main dining room.

Su Shijun sat at the head of the table, flipping through the newspaper that had just been delivered, carefully reading about the unexpected incident at the celebration banquet after she left last night.

”Chirp, chirp chirp...”

Poseidon sat beside the newspaper, complaining incessantly to the witch at the head of the table, his topics ranging from today’s bad weather to the nightmare he had last night, and then to the Flower Sprite that had just flown by the window, with almost no repetition in his words.

Speaking at the dining table is generally not quite in line with etiquette.

But firstly, it wasn’t time for breakfast yet, secondly, the nanny in charge of etiquette wasn’t present, and there were no outsiders around, and thirdly, the content of the newspaper in front of the witch attracted most of her attention, so the owner of Greenhill Mansion just pretended there was a sparrow beside her, completely ignoring the little fox’s chirping.

On a winter morning, the sun hadn’t fully risen yet, and the cold white light shone through the tall floor-to-ceiling windows onto the reddish-brown tables and chairs, forming a gradually expanding narrow band of light. The Great Witch and the little fox seated within it seemed like two pieces of jade snuggled together, clear and bright, radiating a gentle hue.

When Zheng Qing entered the dining room, this was the harmonious scene he saw.

”Sorry...”

He had just uttered the first two words when a white streak zoomed from one end of the dining table to the other, as if like a ball, crashing into his arms and interrupting the rest of his sentence.

”Chirp chirp chirp chirp...”

The little fox wagged his tail excitedly, impatiently bragging to the boy about mastering a few more spells, recognizing several kinds of magic herbs, learning many rune combinations, while not forgetting to quietly complain that someone was too strict, and that he hadn’t been able to visit the Pet Garden to play with Jiulama and the others in a long time, and more.

Su Shijun put down the newspaper and glanced over.

Zheng Qing promptly placed the ’furball’ back on the table, at the same time discreetly pinching her ear to indicate someone was watching her. The little fox whimpered, quieting down dispiritedly.

”Didn’t see you doing your morning class today.” Su Shijun gestured for Zheng Qing to sit closer, while picking up a slender silver hammer and tapping it on the brass bell at the edge of the table.

Ding!

Accompanied by the crisp bell sound, an oval porcelain plate suddenly appeared before Zheng Qing, covered with a silver plate lid. A fox maid silently approached, placed a glass of green drink beside the porcelain plate, lifted the silver plate lid, then bowed slightly and retreated.

Zheng Qing’s first impression was that there were too many steps in this process that could be bypassed with magic, but he wisely avoided discussing this topic with Su Shijun.

”Slept a bit late yesterday, so this morning... got up a bit late.” He vaguely answered the witch’s question, intentionally omitting that the books he saw in the study last night kept his mind racing for a long time, causing insomnia.

”Because of last night’s banquet?” The witch pointed to the newspaper on the table. Zheng Qing blinked, took the newspaper, scanned the content briefly, and understood what she meant.

”Um... yeah, kind of.” The warlock agreed ambiguously, taking the green drink in front of him, sipping it, while quickly skimming through the newspaper’s content.

Although it appeared a bit odd, the taste of this drink was not as bland as it seemed, carrying a touch of sweet grassy flavor, with a fairly smooth texture.

”Why didn’t you mention this matter to me last night?” Su Shijun elegantly cut the fried egg and toast before her with knife and fork, while glancing at Poseidon seated on Zheng Qing’s other side.

The little fox sat properly at the table, a white napkin tied around her neck by the maid, the trailing white cotton cloth securely covering her fluffy tail under her paws, presenting a ladylike demeanor.

”Last night... my mind was a bit messy, so...” Zheng Qing carefully chose his words—while he wasn’t speaking a complete falsehood because the stack of books he saw in Su Shijun’s study indeed plunged his mind into chaos for a while—saying it following the witch’s words here gave the impression his mental turmoil was caused by the banquet incident.

Moments later, Zheng Qing put down the newspaper, frowned.

The newspaper content regarding various events last night was rich, ranging from the black wizard’s death notice to details about the Crow Organization and its collapse; from the various hunting teams’ names and achievements participating in the hunt to major hunters’ personal resumes; from the Trident Sword and First University’s sincere cooperation to the massive role of the School Guardian Array, and more, covering almost everything.

The only exception was that the newspaper scarcely mentioned anything about that night’s banquet and a certain ’incident’ at the banquet, with just a sparse hundred characters. If one wasn’t the person involved, it was easy to overlook these details.

”They would rather dedicate large paragraphs describing the black wizard Walter’s past misdeeds and the scale of the illegal laboratory the crows set up, without writing a single extra word about that banquet attack incident...” Zheng Qing directly stabbed the fried egg with a fork and stuffed it into his mouth, chewing vehemently.

”You said a bean drilled into your body?”

”Absolutely!” Zheng Qing seriously looked at the witch, trying to enhance his persuasiveness, he also took out a gold bean from the grey cloth bag and gestured: ”That bean is approximately this size, it’s made of brass... we saw it while chasing crows before...”

”Didn’t go to the school hospital?”

”Went there, but the therapists couldn’t find...”

”Extend your hand, let me take a look.” The witch commanded in an indisputable tone.

Zheng Qing didn’t think Su Shijun’s skill was more refined than those Big Wizards or the professional therapists at the school hospital, yet he obediently extended his hand, letting the witch’s slender white fingers rest on his wrist.

The sunlight outside fell on her shoulders and hair tips, making the witch, already dazzling, even more striking. For some reason, Zheng Qing suddenly felt those sunbeams seemed like a swarm of furry bees, having just discovered a blooming flower garden, buzzing and landing on those flowers in bloom, the air brewing with a hint of sweet fragrance.

”Um... do you think I should let Xin Panger write an article reminding everyone that the crows haven’t all been caught yet?” Zheng Qing forced himself to look away, trying hard to get his brain working.

”Not great.”

The witch squinted, while cautiously capturing the subtle magic power changes inside Zheng Qing, speaking significantly: ”Holding onto ceramics, there’s no way to punch hard. For the school, reputation, face, etc., are those precious ceramics. Do people avoid dog shit because it’s scary? No, it’s simply because it’s dirty. Things related to black wizards are all dirty... they can easily stir up a stink, best avoided. Since your task is finished, then distancing yourself from it early is never wrong.”
