High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1847: Chapter 68: Before the Foothills

Although they received the message from the Green Bird, the Atonement Hunting Team’s operation did not go smoothly.

When the five young wizards sequentially left the camp and crossed the barrier, a dead raven hung on the camp gate happened to fall right into the center of their formation, landing at Li Meng’s feet.

This time, the little witch did not scream. Instead, she quickly squatted down, picked up the dead raven by its claws, and flaunted it in front of Zheng Qing.

”What did I say?”

She showed no trace of fear on her face, looking rather smug: ”An ill omen! A very bad omen! A black dog struts the street, a dead raven hits the ground, an owl snickers, ancestral tablets topple... What signs could possibly be worse than these?”

Zheng Qing stared at the rotting, emaciated dead raven, feeling a shadow cast over his heart. In fact, the atmosphere in the entire hunting team had already started to sour even without the little witch’s commentary.

”Li Meng, throw it away!”

Jiang Yu warned in a dangerous tone. Modern wizards may not care much about the ”bad luck” that classical mysticism wizards are concerned with, but they are more or less influenced.

Keeping away from dirty things is one such rule.

And a dead raven is undoubtedly considered filthy.

Hearing her cousin’s reprimand, the little witch pouted, casually tossed the dead raven back onto the camp gate, and Jiang Yu immediately tore open an anti-evil charm, using a faint blue flame to clean Li Meng’s hands.

”A few dead ravens don’t mean anything.”

Zheng Qing tried to encourage his companions, but his rambling couldn’t even convince himself: ”It was merely blown down by a gust of wind just now. As the saying goes, ’The wind moves the banner, neither the wind nor the banner moves, it is the heart that moves...’ With a stable heart, external evils self-destruct.”

”But that dead raven indicates that this place has probably exceeded the jurisdiction of the Wizard’s Code.”

Xiao Xiao adjusted his glasses and glanced back at his captain: ”Although I also don’t think a dead raven falling to the ground means anything... I prefer to trust my crystal ball. Let’s go and see what new things we might encounter outside.”

After saying that, he raised his arm and made a gesture.

The five teammates perked up, stood in their respective positions, and, following the diviner’s instructions, began to hum in voices of varying pitches to activate the simple hunting array together.

Buzz!

A resonating, faint red magical halo spread out with a melodious low hum, soon enveloping the entire hunting team. The five young hunters, Xin and the Doctor in front, Jiang Yu and Zheng Qing at the back, and Li Meng in the middle, formed a line. Under the faint red halo, they resembled a mutated earth dragon, navigating the gently surging force fields, gliding forward smoothly under the guidance of the Green Bird.

Eyjafjallajökull was not far from the trialists’ camp.

The Atonement Hunting Team, fully activating the hunting array, took less than half an hour to reach the strange yet familiar edge of the foothills where the red-faced male wizard waited.

At that time, Zhang Ji Xin was crawling behind a small hill, hiding in a layer of the Ost’s Guard barrier, carefully spying on the chaotic ogre camp in the distance.

”Is this thing useful?” Zheng Qing asked after entering the barrier, looking around with some unease.

He had a deep impression of this magic.

The first time he encountered the wizard’s world, following Thomas to Great Ming Pavilion to buy school supplies, he witnessed the ’Ost’s Guard’. Even from eight hundred meters away, the pig demon rushed over with red eyes, making Zheng Qing doubt the reliability of similar non-standard spells for a while after that.

”Rest assured, I’ve been watching them all morning. If they could see through Ost’s Guard, they would have noticed me a long time ago.”

Zhang Ji Xin replied confidently.

Ogres are notoriously impulsive and brainless, sensitive like guard dogs to any abnormal aura in their territory. If they suspect anything, they would grab their big bones and stones, smashing around wildly.

”Do you need a break?” Xiao Xiao asked, hugging the crystal ball and crouching beside Zhang Ji Xin.

”Not for now.”

The red-faced male wizard turned around to greet the teammates who filed in, immediately spotting the dispirited Li Meng in the middle of the group.

”Didn’t you sleep well last night?”

He frowned, saying something similar to Zheng Qing and then took out a green-black fruit and handed it over: ”My brother always said that the most crucial part of any plan is getting a good night’s sleep the night before. I find it very reasonable... Here, this is a wasabi fruit, excellent for refreshing the mind.”

At the mention of wasabi, the little witch’s face scrunched up immediately.

”I’m perfectly awake!”

She answered grumpily, patting the law book hanging at her waist. The cover of the book emitted a magical halo over an inch high as if endorsing Li Meng’s denial.

Zheng Qing noticed Zhang Ji Xin’s open palm—or more accurately, he noticed the gloves Zhang Ji Xin wore today that were different from usual, appearing somewhat tattered.

”You changed your gloves?” The captain of the Atonement Hunting Team asked curiously.

”Oh, this.”

Seeing the little witch was unappreciative, Zhang Ji Xin shrugged, retracted the wasabi fruit, and then waved the gloves at Zheng Qing: ”... The previous pair was a birthday present from my brother, made of fire dragon skin. Just that piece of skin could sell for five or six jade coins in Nanjing Pavilion, not to mention the magic script engraved on it.”

”So?”

”So who would waste such good skin smashing ogres?” The main hunter of the Atonement Hunting Team spoke as if it was obvious: ”They’re smelly and ugly, spoiling things for no good reason... whether it’s a one-headed or two-headed ogre.”

”Then what kind of leather is the current pair made of? They look a bit gloomy.”

”Ordinary cow leather, gloves I used for training before... You feel they’re gloomy because they’ve been used a long time, accumulated some dead aura.”

”In any case, for a cow, it must be an honor to strike an ogre.”

Xin Fat Man somehow pulled out a string of fried spiders, munching on them with relish while commenting, ”Merlin Above, the cows providing these skins are probably lying in some corner of the world, pointing at their bleeding flesh, loudly lamenting the meaning of bovine life.”

”If I were the cow, I wouldn’t have such high awareness at all.” Li Meng hugged her arms, biting her finger, shaking her head thoughtfully.

Perhaps because of the relaxed conversation atmosphere around, she was no longer sluggish as she had been in the morning, recovering some of her liveliness.

”You’re a wizard, not a cow.”

Jiang Yu raised her hand, lightly flicked her on the forehead: ”Don’t bite your fingers... and don’t stand there dazed, take out your feather pen, and help me calculate the positions of the protective formation nodes. We’ll set up a stable area before the assault.”
