High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1837: Chapter 58: Granting Wings, Whispering Softly

The process of passing through the swarm of ravens was uneventful.

Of course, it wasn’t that easy either, considering the ominous black birds flapping their wings from all directions, cawing hoarsely, with pairs of red eyes observing the various travelers.

Zheng Qing felt as if he was facing an evil deity from the depths of the starry sky.

Everyone was under immense psychological pressure, even Li Meng, who was usually lively, turned into a quail, tucking her wings and obediently staying at the back of the group, quiet and well-behaved.

Fortunately, the little witch did not faint today.

This rendered the Mystical Grain leaves Zheng Qing had prepared in advance useless. But it’s fine, considering Li Meng’s psychological endurance, she was bound to faint eventually, giving Zheng Qing a chance to make a positive impression in front of everyone.

With this mindset that was neither entirely honorable nor entirely dark, Zheng Qing and his five teammates safely passed through the raven swarm, slowly descending to a few hundred meters above the ground.

Beneath them was a desolate area resembling a sparse savanna. In the distance, surrounded by rolling shadows of mountains, a narrow but turbulent river meandered through this desolation, its murky water almost indistinguishable in color from the surrounding soil, almost making Zheng Qing feel he had returned to his homeland.

He couldn’t help but look up at the sky.

The blue-grey rain clouds continued to churn above, heavy and thick, obscuring any view of the sky beyond. Yet the faint blue hue covering the surface of the world clearly told the warlock that this was no longer the world he was familiar with.

The young wizard sighed lightly and lowered his head again.

Perhaps due to the terrain, the yellow river made a large bend beneath the raven swarm, forming a wide and flat piece of land.

At this moment, the land was crisscrossed with numerous gullies, resembling mini-canals, connecting the two sides of the large curve, forming a huge Five-pointed Star Magic Array.

Murky river water flowed through the gullies, with a thin layer of mist covering the water’s surface, like flying strokes in characters written with thick ink. At the intersections of the gullies were the nodes of the Five-pointed Star Array. Each node housed a rudimentary campsite.

As they continued to descend, the details of those camps became clearer.

They seemed to be on small islets in the water, surrounded by yellow river water, with tall trees forming fences around the camps, and low grey tents spread out in the center of the camps.

Figures could be vaguely seen leaning on the fences, looking up at the sky.

The young wizards of the Absolution Hunting Team almost simultaneously felt the hesitation among their teammates. Similarly, the other teams that had just passed through the raven swarm also began to slow down their descent.

”Which camp should we enter?” Li Meng flapped her quail wings furiously, resembling a plump quail, hopping and shouting loudly: ”Do we choose the one with people or without?”

The camps with people seemed lively, while those without were lifeless. At first glance, it seemed the young ones should choose the empty camps to occupy a node of the magic array; but then again, having come to this unfamiliar world for a trial, what use would an empty camp be?

Zheng Qing looked at Xiao Xiao, who had somehow taken out his crystal ball again, mumbling and continuously rotating that beautiful little sphere, seemingly unable to calculate any results for the time being.

Looking at Zhang Ji Xin, the red-faced boy with his arms crossed looked like he was about to burst from making a difficult decision.

The young public-funded student sighed lightly and waved his hand:

”Pick the closest!”

”What?” The chubby boy’s ears perked up, but he didn’t seem to understand Zheng Qing’s inexplicable words.

”He’s saying ’pick the closest one’,” Jiang Yu explained: ”Since the school didn’t specify beforehand, any choice might be reasonable.”

The chubby boy’s face showed a hint of realization.

Zhang Ji Xin also punched his palm, and the dark red on his face quickly faded, returning to a healthy red: ”Yes, at this moment, our choice can be summed up in one word: quick!”

”Quick is two words.” The Doctor put away the crystal ball and adjusted his glasses.

Zhang Ji Xin didn’t mind his diviner’s criticism. The translucent ephemera wings behind him gently quivered, and he began descending again.

The other hunters of the Absolution Hunting Team followed suit.

Almost at the same time, the other teams hovering in mid-air for a moment made up their minds and headed towards their respective selected camps.

Three hundred meters, two hundred meters, one hundred meters.

In a blink, they descended to less than a hundred meters above the ground, and the details of the rudimentary camp became increasingly vivid. The piles of miscellaneous items in the corners of the camp, the scarecrows standing outside, and the grey-robed wizard standing with arms crossed in front of the tent were all clearly visible.

Zheng Qing faintly felt that the gray-robed wizard looked somewhat familiar.

Before he could precisely recall the figure in his mind, he felt the ephemera wings behind him slightly pause, and then, as if passing through a curtain of water.

”We just passed through the Protect Legal Formation, don’t worry!” Xiao Xiao’s reassuring voice sounded in his ear, stopping the teammates from eagerly raising their law books.

Though he said so, Zheng Qing still felt a slight unease.

He looked up and around, seeing only the dull-grey sky and the desolate sparse savanna, unable to see any other camps or the other descending teams.

”I can’t see the other teams anymore!” he loudly reminded his teammates.

”Perhaps it’s just the isolation effect of the magic array?” the chubby boy guessed, with a hint of hesitation in his voice.

”Get your spells ready, just in case!” Xiao Xiao also immediately changed his stance.

”Change our formation,” Zhang Ji Xin quickly instructed, fulfilling his role as the lead hunter: ”Put the chubby boy at the front, always ready to reveal his true form; the monitor leads Xiao Meng at the rear; Mr. Zha on the left, I’m on the right, and the Doctor in the middle... Stay alert and vigilant!”

While speaking, the group had descended to less than twenty meters above the ground.

The eerie magic symbols painted on the fence, the patches on the grey tents, the stinky ditch at the edge of the camp, even the crooked nose of a scarecrow, were all clearly visible.

At this height, Xin Fat Man wouldn’t even need wings to safely land after transforming into the Blue Giant.

The face of the grey-robed wizard standing in the center of the camp also became clearer.

Zheng Qing widened his eyes slightly, joyfully shouting: ”It’s Old Verne from the School Works Committee! Lin Guo knows him too... previously in charge of night patrols at Lin Zhong Lake!”

This shout brought a relief to the taut nerves of the young wizards.

Then Zheng Qing saw the familiar stern face of the old man.

The last ten meters.

Old Verne uncrossed his hands from his robe sleeves and held up an old law book, glancing at the excited public-funded student greeting him and the other fast-descending young wizards. He moistened his right index finger with saliva and slowly turned the page:

”Yu Yu Qiao Qiao, Yu Wei Xiao Xiao!
