High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1305: Chapter 52: The True Xiao Xiao’s Sheep Milk Report

The sunset in May filtered through the window glass, laying across the desk of dormitory 403.

The withered daisies in the vase lay in the patch of light the color of honey, yet devoid of any vitality. A light breeze from outside rustled the delicate branches, causing the sunlight in the room to flicker ever so slightly, like a swarm of succulent and juicy fireflies.

Fatty Cat Tuan Tuan’s gaze chased the dancing spots of light on the desk, its claws extending and retracting from its paws, eager to pounce.

Xin Fat Man watched the cat on his belly with concern, internally struggling between protecting his robe and being scratched by the cat.

Other people in the dormitory were also fixated on their own trivial matters, appearing incredibly focused—ever since Zheng Qing mentioned Lin Guo’s Black Mountain Goat, the atmosphere in the dorm had cooled once again—making the young scholarship student suspect he was under some kind of ”killjoy” curse.

A renowned hunting team, an entire week, within a limited scope, couldn’t find a single Black Mountain Goat.

They hadn’t found it.

Everyone on the Absolution Hunting Team felt they had lost face.

Especially as they watched Lin Guo’s eyes shift from hopeful to disappointed, time and again.

”Huff!”

Tuan Tuan finally gave up observing and with a powerful push of its limbs, leaped onto the desk to chase those mischievous spots of light. Its movements when pouncing were minimal, yet it still managed to make the sturdy wooden desk wobble a few times. This drew several attentive gazes from around the room.

Xiao Xiao seemed to finally snap out of his recent dejection.

He sighed, pulled open a drawer, and took out a parchment scroll tied with a ribbon, handing it under the young scholarship student’s nose.

”Almost forgot,” the Doctor mumbled, pulling off the ribbon from the scroll: ”...Here, help me sign this.”

”What is this?”

”A report, and a request for the school’s assistance in the investigation.”

”The School Works Committee has already refused to help with the goat,” Zheng Qing reminded, ”Last week I accompanied Lin Guo to their office... They stated that per procedures, pets missing for less than a month don’t qualify for school-assisted searches.”

Thinking back on that day in the office filled Zheng Qing with irritation.

Shirking responsibility, bureaucratic indifference, passive responses—it seemed this was a problem encountered by every long-standing, sizable organization.

”It’s not about the goat,” Xiao Xiao shook the parchment, and noticing Zheng Qing had no intention to take it, spread it out on the desk: ”But it is related to goats... Have you all noticed that, over the past week, the number of students drinking goat milk at the school has increased significantly? This is abnormal.”

Everyone else in the dorm nodded in agreement—except for Dylan, who had recently taken a liking to eating rare steak streaked with blood, paired with the plasma of young and strong Tricksters.

”What? Have you found out something?” Xin Fat Man quickly sensed the ’elements’ behind the matter, his spirit immediately revived, sitting up from the bed with a flutter, his hands already holding an opened notebook and a feather pen soaked with ink.

”Nothing.” The Doctor frowned, glancing at the notebook in the fat man’s hands, somewhat disheartened: ”The consequence of grasping at straws is that we are scattering our efforts; we should still focus our main energy on Lin Guo’s Big Black...”

Zheng Qing felt that there was no direct connection between eyebrows, beards, and chaotic situations, but that didn’t mean he opposed the Doctor’s opinion. He also thought his recent fondness for drinking sheep’s milk was a bit strange.

In contrast, Xin Fat Man, with the scrutinizing nature of a journalist, offered a different perspective.

”If I’m not mistaken, the school hasn’t issued any health risk warnings lately,” he rapidly flipped through his notebook, which was crammed with various school notices and announcements: ”...Does this mean that the situation is under control?”

”Just to be safe,” Xiao Xiao was especially cautious about this matter: ”In case the school really hasn’t noticed the anomaly... that would be bad.”

”I have my doubts.” Zheng Qing wasn’t questioning Xiao Xiao’s approach but he couldn’t help being sarcastic as he suddenly recalled his experience when applying for an investigation with Lin Guo at the School Works Committee:

”First University is like a giant, or a Thunder Dragon; if an ant bites its toe, it might not notice, or it might take a month to react.”

”Indeed.” Xin Fat Man couldn’t help but laugh.

”If there’s room in your investigation report, can you include some of my opinions?” Zheng Qing stretched his neck and glanced at the huge blank space beneath the investigation report on the table, then began to describe to the Doctor the School Works Committee’s sluggish and bureaucratic style – he had always been looking for an opportunity to lodge a complaint.

”Um... I guess that’s okay,” Xiao Xiao nodded reluctantly, but emphasized, ”I’ll just add it in; whether it will have any effect, I don’t know... The student council likely operates in the same manner.”

Zheng Qing shrugged indifferently.

”No expectations, hence no disappointments,” he said in a relaxed voice and attitude: ”It’s like beating the grass to scare out the rabbits, a bonus if you actually get one... Besides, someone has to say something, right?”

”You’re thinking of finding people to co-sign? How many have you found?” Xin Fat Man was flipping through that parchment report and quickly signed it, pushing it in front of Zheng Qing, then turned to look at Xiao Xiao: ”Do you need my help?”

It was well known that the journalist had a wide network of contacts.

”No, thank you.” Xiao Xiao watched Zheng Qing sign and then gestured for the Sprites to deliver it to student Dylan’s coffin side, explaining simultaneously: ”During tonight’s gathering, I’ll just need help from my classmates... I only need the minimum number of people.”

According to the school’s regulations, a petition requesting the school’s assistance in an investigation needed to be co-signed by more than thirty students in order to be received by the student council or the Professor Joint Meeting.

Xiao Xiao had already collected more than a dozen signatures.

”It’s indeed not difficult,” Zheng Qing nodded.

Because of this, before the evening gathering, the occupants of dorm 403 arrived half an hour earlier than usual to the classroom. Everyone scattered throughout the room to chat, trying hard to convince their classmates to sign the parchment before the professor entered.

Such an easy and cost-free request was basically met with no refusals.

Perhaps only Li Meng would make demands before signing, asking Zheng Qing to buy her a cone of ice cream. Zheng Qing agreed on the surface but immediately turned and reported her to Jiang Yu then watched with a smile as Jiang Yu pinched the Little Witch’s cheek.

He did it under the pretext of giving Li Meng an early lesson on the harsh realities of the world and the devious nature of the human heart.

Speaking of human nature, due to past conversations in the dorm, Zheng Qing paid special attention to Matthew Karen. As expected, the normally graceful Moonlight Noble appeared somewhat languid that day, with a gloomy look in his eyes. It seemed that the downfall of Sir Friedman had indeed impacted the young member of Karen’s family from the Blood Race.

It was sigh-inducing.
