High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 348: Chapter 17 Birdsong Chirping_1

Zheng Qing ultimately couldn’t direct the large mountain goat to seek help.

Perhaps it was because his ’Sheep Man Language’ was not yet advanced, so the big mountain goat couldn’t understand what he was saying; perhaps the goat was merely refusing to accept such a garbled command—it was very unmagical to ask an animal companion to stray from its unconscious master.

In any case, after three minutes of Zheng Qing’s dry-tongued bleating, the big mountain goat remained stationary before him, chewed on what could’ve been its late-night snack, and looked without expression at the young wizard’s performance.

This made him feel rather foolish.

At the four-minute mark, the big mountain goat was no longer a spectator—perhaps simply because it had grown tired of the young wizard’s strange calls—it solved Zheng Qing’s problem in another way.

It awakened Lin Guo.

The black mountain goat extended its rough tongue, slobbering all over the young male wizard’s face. After licking patiently for two minutes, Lin Guo woke up, sneezing.

”So cold!” His teeth were chattering, he said shivering, ”Is it raining?”

The big mountain goat snorted, rubbing its cheek against the young wizard’s.

Its long hair penetrated right into Lin Guo’s nostrils, causing him to sneeze in rapid succession.

”Have you copied the contact spell onto your law book?” Zheng Qing did not turn his head and was still staring intently at the wild demon, bound like a dumpling not far from him.

It might have been an illusion, but he always felt that aside from greed, there seemed to be a hint of fear in the kappa monster’s gaze whenever it looked at him.

But he had no time to dissect the nuances right now.

”I need to maintain the binding spell,” He tried to control the rhythm of his breathing, hoping his voice didn’t sound too through gritted teeth, ”Hurry up and notify...”

”Right!” Lin Guo understood the situation in a few seconds, and hurriedly flipped through the law book, promising aloud.

The black mountain goat seemed to realize that it had fulfilled its task and took small steps towards the edge of the corridor.

There was a clump of lush soybean seedlings there, gently nodding in the evening wind.

Click-clack-clickity.

”Bird song in light notes, crying out for friendship...” murmured spell, paired with the black mountain goat’s delicate footsteps, resounded throughout the corridor.

An invisible ripple emanated from Lin Guo, quietly sweeping in all directions.

Silent and stealthy.

Nonetheless, numerous spots in the campus were thrown into chaos within the blink of an eye.

...

”Bang!”

The wooden door of the small house on the lake pier exploded.

A towering old wizard moved briskly towards the lakefront corridor on the eastern side of the lake, leaving his walking stick, usually used as a prop, trailing behind him, creating sparks of bright orange amidst the moist grass.

His complexion was still flushed, but his eyes had lost their previous dull look and were now showing signs of icy terror.

The old hunting dog’s tail dragged along the surface, following close behind the elder like a shadow.

...

”Thud!”

In the maintenance committee office building, on the top floor, a room that was typically locked had sounds of tables and chairs being overturned.

”Whoosh!”

The office door was pushed open forcefully, a red-robed sophomore came bolting out in a fluster, screamed hoarsely, ”Alert! Alert! Red Alert! Someone set off the Red Alert!”

The corridor quieted down for a few seconds.

Then, at almost the same time, doors to several offices opened.

”Where is it?!”

”Are you sure you didn’t misread the array’s indication? I feel like I just closed my eyes...”

”Why are you running out here yelling? Did you follow the procedure manual and notify the relevant departments? A joint meeting of the professors? The dean’s office? Did you upgrade the alert level of the protective array?”

Several staff members in gray robes, together with an assistant in a black robe, bombarded the sophomore veteran with a flurry of questions while tightening their belts.

The veteran sophomore seemed dismayed by the barrage of problems they fired at him.

”I don’t have...” he stammered, seeming lost, ”I just saw it, and immediately came to let you know...”

”You are the one on duty!” An assistant beside him seemed frustrated, ”Didn’t we rehearse these response plans before?”

”It’s my first day on duty...” The veteran’s face flushed red, yet he didn’t defend himself any further.

As the conversations went on, a crowd rushed into the office.

A glaring red halo enveloped the entire room; a giant pale red light sphere floated in the middle of the room, and numerous arrays etched into the walls also manifested in a similar color.

The mechanical alarm system repeatedly reiterated the same message:

”Emergency alert, emergency alert... a confirmed unregistered entity located at coordinates X1325Y2791Z341, threat level 95, danger level low...”

”Thank goodness it’s only a Wild Demon’s level...” one black-robed assistant wiped the cold sweat from his brow, obviously relieved.

”Good, my ass!” The leading staff in the gray robe looked rather displeased, ”This Wild Demon showed up on the east side of Linzhong Lake, which is the core area of the academy.”

The control room suddenly fell silent.

Almost everyone was terrified by this news.

...

In the lakefront corridor, two oblivious freshmen were unaware of the storm the distress spell they just invoked had triggered.

The sky was clear with few clouds tonight, with a bright moon hanging in mid-air, attracting attention.

The lake was also calm, occasionally shimmering under the night breeze.

The Kappa Monster was constrained into a bundle by the binding spell, even its ear-holes were stuffed - if Zheng Qing was not worried about its demon blood contaminating the grassland too much, he would certainly burst its frightening eyes.

”So scary... how did a Wild Demon suddenly show up?” Lin Guo seemed to have recovered from the scare a few minutes ago, and was now slightly lively again; however, one could still detect the shock in his tone: ”You didn’t see, it was standing next to the shrubs, like a tree...”

”Maybe a demon had sneaked into the lake,” Zheng Qing was still staring at the Wild Demon intently, not even daring to blink.

Stimulated by the evening chill, he felt his eyelids were about to give in and spill hot tears.

”Exactly, exactly!” Lin Guo suddenly raised his voice: ”I was just thinking - given how loud the conflict had reached, why didn’t any Fishmen show up from the lake to investigate? Could it be them...”

”It wasn’t the Fishmen’s fault.” An abrupt voice interrupted Lin Guo’s conjecture, startling the two young wizards in the corridor.

Even Zheng Qing couldn’t help but turn around subconsciously to take a glance at the speaker.

The speaker was a white-haired wizard wearing a black robe.

Zheng Qing recognized this figure; on the enrollment flight, this assistant, as a member of the Guard Team, had appeared beside him.

Behind the assistant, a series of black and gray figures silently emerged on either side of the corridor, with a few yellow Deadly Wind Lamps rapidly closing in from the distance.

”If I were you, I’d keep the spell active while turning back,” The white-haired assistant offered a polite reminder, his tone gentle and courteous.

From the ear, a low, grating roar, followed by the snapping sounds of the vines, reached Zheng Qing.

His heart skipped a beat, realizing something had gone awry.

He could almost envision the Kappa Monster pouncing at him.

”Reckless beast!” A familiar loud voice broke the tranquility of the lakeside.

Zheng Qing turned around in surprise.

Professor Ferna had appeared on the lawn up the slope when he hadn’t even noticed.

With his broad palm, he gripped the nape of the Kappa Monster as though grabbing a rabbit, and gave it a shake.

The Wild Demon, having just broken free of its cage but before it could announce its liberation, collapsed into a mess of mud amidst the crisp sound of bones shattering.

At the feet of the elderly man, May the Old sat on the ground, lolling her tongue and smacking her lips, seemingly savoring the sadness of the Kappa Monster wafting in the air.
