High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 309: Chapter 233: The Key to Learning Magic Spells_1

A simple sketch is still just a simple sketch after all.

In its crude graphite head, there is no room to accommodate a normal soul.

Why would the professor bring a thug to the classroom?

That doesn’t make sense at all.

Before Zheng Qing could complain to his peers about the peculiar thought process of the stick figure, the classroom door was abruptly opened.

Professor Yao, with lecture notes in hand, rushed into the classroom followed by two burly grey-robed school workers carrying a wooden box.

The box, approximately half a meter tall, had a red lacquer bottom, brass lotus leaf lock, and landscape patterns embedded on its surface. It looked as though it was inlaid with jade-like borders.

”Good morning!” The professor casually waved his hand to the students, ”No need to stand up...sit, sit...you may both just place the box right here.”

He pointed to the open space next to the lectern, indicating to the two school workers in grey.

The box was heavy and it resounded with a dull echo as it was put on the floor. The workers seemed genuinely relieved and after a quick salute to the professor, they left the classroom.

Zheng Qing craned his neck, trying his best to see what was in the box.

Many students shared his curiosity, instantly causing a noise from the friction of chairs and tables against the floor.

Only Nicholas, the veteran who had been held back twice and sat in the corner of the back row, extinguished such curiosity. With a faint smile, he returned his focus to the workbook, oblivious to the gradually agitated atmosphere in the classroom.

”Professor, what’s in the box?” Li Meng raised her short arm in a flash, expressing the question on everyone’s mind.

Regardless of the subject matter, it seemed that only she had the courage to openly voice her doubts, unfazed by the daunting aura of each professor.

Without directly answering the question, Professor Yao squinted with a smile and posed another question:

”Have you all finished your homework?”

The homework from the last Spell class was not practicing the new spells. Even though Zheng Qing had memorized the spell’s mantra and wrote it well in his Spell book, he could not make a single change to the Spell book, let alone successfully cast a spell.

Zheng Qing didn’t even know what would happen after the spell had been cast.

It seemed as if the professor had given them an incorrect spell.

Thus, instead of the usual homework assignment of practicing or memorizing the ’Yuan Chen Guardian’, Professor Yao assigned a new task at the end of the last class.

Analyzing ’Spell book’.

Everyone wrote papers of more than 3000 words on the topic ’Understanding of the Spell Book’. There were no restrictions on the content, scope, or format---except for word count.

This allowed a great deal of creative freedom.

Zhang Ji Xin wrote a narrative essay, listing the spell books he had used over the years and their outcomes, simultaneously lamenting the passing of time. Zheng Qing had never realized that this crude man had such a delicate touch with words.

Doctor Xiao wrote a concise academic paper. He briefly summarized the reason for the rise of spell books and the root of the decline of wands and hand spells. His focus of discussion was on ’How spell books became the medium for casting spells.’

As for Xin Fat Man, he wrote a 3000-word discursive essay on the types and specifications of spell books.

To Zheng Qing, this was purely opportunist.

In Dylan’s words, ’Fat Man’s paper was essentially a copy of the product descriptions from Shangyuan Bookstore... There was no technical content! Amazingly, this homework actually fulfilled the professor’s requirements...’

Compared to them, Zheng Qing, who had no deep understanding of spell books, simply described his book purchasing experience in the manner of a recollection due to his accidental involvement in the process of ’blood refining spell book’.

In any case, the homework assigned by Professor Yao in the last class was not so difficult.

However, the classroom’s atmosphere became more agitated due to the strange box, rapidly calming down after the professor inquired about the status of the homework, becoming unusually quiet.

Although the homework had been completed, given Old Yao’s mischievous nature, no one could guarantee that the professor would not call a student up to read their work aloud before the class.

Even the typically bold and reckless Li Meng quietly retracted her arm, trying to hide herself under the desk.

”None of you did your homework?” Professor Yao looked at everyone curiously, frowning.

”We did!” This time, the response from the class was unanimous.

”Why didn’t you speak up if you did...” Professor Yao scolded with a laugh: ”You bunch of wimps, you scared me! ... Tang Dun, collect the homework first, bring the homework to me.”

The tall monitor stood up as asked, beginning to collect the homework table by table, dragging heavy steps.

Meanwhile, Professor Yao didn’t remain silent.

He leaned against the lectern, took out his pipe from his pocket, knocked it casually on the edge of the lectern, and popped it back into his mouth.

Without stuffing in tobacco or lighting it up, threads of blue smoke rose from the pipe, hiding his face behind the curtain of smoke. A glossy hairstyle loomed in mid-air, like a lurking large beetle.

”School has been in session for a month now... and all of you have learned two very powerful spells from me.”

”The Binding Curse, and Yin Chen Guardian.”

”But, I am disappointed.”

”Up to now, it seems that most students in the class still cannot fully perform these two spells.”

Zheng Qing thought of his still stalling Yuan Chen Guardian Spell, and lowered his head in embarrassment, his gaze falling on the Yuan Chen Guardian spell written in his Spell book.

”I thought about it when I got home.”

”This is not entirely your fault... I found that you do not understand a key basic issue.”

Old Yao waved away the smoke in front of him, revealing a serious expression:

”That is the relationship between spells and Spell book.”

”This is a very basic issue that I should have explained in the first class, but I think that making this adjustment will give you a deeper impression of this class.”

”The class is still dull and platitudinous.”

”But the understanding is the ladder for you to step into the world of spells.”

Zheng Qing involuntarily looked up.

”There are two keys to learning spells. One is the spell, the other is the Spell book.”

”Spell books bear the projection of spells in this world, and spells are the triggers for this projection.”

Professor Yao flipped open the Spell book by his side and flicked his finger.

A stream of rainbow-like symbols floated up from the pages of the book and splashed onto the blackboard like a rainbow.

A string of rough handwriting gradually emerged with the rainbow’s disappearance:

”When you cannot correctly understand these two terms, no matter how powerful a spell you have, you will not be able to cast it.”
