High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 312: Chapter 236 We Are Cruel Enough_1

The weather outside seemed rather gloomy.

The thick clouds blocked out the bright sunlight, painting a layer of ashen grey across the sky, making everyone under this environment feel somewhat oppressed.

However, the students inside Classroom 601 of the Jiuyou Academy main teaching building might disagree.

Compared to the heavy negative pressure inside the room, the vast expanse outside the window seemed harmonious.

Standing on the podium, Professor Yao held a crumpled sheet of mulberry paper between two of his fingers, a frown knitting his brows together:

”Whose homework is this?”

The students in the room carefully turned their heads, discreetly assessing each other, every face appearing suspicious.

Of course, this did not include the few male students sitting by the window in the back row.

Xin Fat Man hesitated for a few seconds.

Then, under Zheng Qing’s insistence, he stood up and sheepishly admitted ownership of the paper.

”Xin student!” Professor Yao was visibly surprised, his tone noticeably gentler.

After all, in his impression, Xin Fat Man was one of the few new students who actively participated in class.

”Do you have any explanation?” The professor paused, giving Fat Man a chance to defend himself.

”We have a spiritual cat in our dormitory, it used my homework paper to wrap its breakfast.” Xin Fat Man replied swiftly, expressing the complaint he had kept bottled inside: ”I don’t know why that cat won’t leave our dormitory... and it always steals our food! Sighs of Melpomene... If not for our responsibility as members of this prestigious academy, to constantly hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards, I would have stewed that fat cat by now!”

Zheng Qing looked at Fat Man with admiration.

”Oh, I see.” Old Yao squinted his eyes, a typical smile on his face: ”Since there are external factors involved, I won’t deduct your academic points... rewrite it.”

Fat Man shook his head to the side, giving the professor a pitiful look.

”Or do you plan to give up the chance to meet Councilor Su?” Professor Yao held his pipe in his mouth and mumbled, ”Remember what I said in the first class of the semester?”

Zhang Qing had to scratch his head for a long time before finally, with the help of an emotional and angrily whispered reminder from a classmate sitting beside him, recalling what the matter was about.

During the first class, Old Yao had promised to introduce everyone to Su Shijun, the most beautiful witch in the wizarding world, according to the legend. Of course, he had his conditions—as of September, everyone had to perform well in his class, and after-class homework must be done excellently.

Without needing anyone else’s reminder, Xin Fat Man immediately thought of that gentleman’s agreement.

”I am willing to rewrite a more perfect homework!” He raised his hand, his eyes wide open, and shouted out loud, ”I will write a six-thousand-word assignment, and there won’t be a single error on the paper! Professor!”

”Professor, I will help supervise!” Zhang Ji Xin also raised his hand, his red face turning purple: ”If his submitted work has one word short, or one word error, I will rewrite it together!”

Zheng Qing looked at his two companions, utterly failing to understand this behavior of theirs.

How childish, the young scholarship student murmured, shaking his head without speaking.

Thus, this small episode within the class came to a perfect conclusion.

Perhaps because of Old Yao’s reminder a few minutes ago, many students suddenly remembered the agreement made during the first class.

This made the subsequent lessons quite smooth.

Almost everyone was eagerly expressing their desire to listen attentively to the class, trying to mitigate the professor’s dissatisfaction accumulated in the previous half of the class through focused gaze, forward-leaning posture, and active responses.

The atmosphere in the classroom seemed twistedly fervent.

But Old Yao seemed quite pleased with this atmosphere, even his lecturing seemed to become more verbose:

”As Xiao mentioned earlier... a standard law book typically has around three hundred pages, divided into thirty Chapters, it can at least carry three spells.”

”To correctly cast a spell, you first need to record it correctly. Only then can you properly release it while using.”

”Because everyone has different grammatical skills, derivation abilities vary, and due to the deviation in the understanding of spells leading to different frameworks, even the same spell recorded in the law book can vary in length.”

”If you are skilled and have outstanding comprehension and derivation abilities, then a law book of about three hundred pages can often carry over a hundred spells.”

”But there are some wizards who would consider it a great fortune if a Law book could record three to five spells.”

”Therefore, how to correctly record and release spells, and how to properly use your Law book, is the main content of our first year Magic Spells course.”

”Of course, as examples for the case, I have carefully selected five spells for you. Any student who can flexibly record these five spells in their Law book and skillfully use them will receive extra credit at the end of the semester.”

”That’s basically it.”

Old Yao puffed out a string of smoke rings and knocked the edge of the lectern with the hand holding his pipe.

Before the ashes could hit the ground, they were quickly gathered by the elves who arrived on hearing the sound, bagged, and carried out of the classroom.

”I will add a little extra-curricular knowledge... I hope you all pay attention.” The professor put down his pipe, picked up his Law book, and flicked it in mid-air:

”As you already know, Law books are sentient.”

”They could possess the spirits of demons, spiritual beasts, or even possibly an elder of an extraterrestrial species, a projection of a devil from hell, or a fragment of a deity’s divinity.”

”As for us humans—whether we are so-called laypeople, wizards, or something else,” it seemed like something came to Yao’s mind and a scornful smile appeared on the corner of his mouth, ”compared to the species truly favored by this universe, our talents are quite poor.”

”Take demons for example.”

”Not to mention those powerful demon kings, or advanced demons; even the lowest-grade wild demons can naturally communicate with the mysterious origin of the universe... through their bloodlines, souls without any effort, they can cast various powerful curses and magic, and grow strong bodies.”

”It seems that they are more suitable for survival under the starry sky than us.”

”But the reality is just the opposite.”

”Now, this world belongs to us wizards—we are the only ones who can proudly walk under the sun, fly in the blue sky. Those gifted demons, however, are forced to hide in the gutters, concealing themselves in the darkness.”

”Why is that?”

”Learning, inheritance, organization, order... perhaps you can list numerous noble reasons.”

”But in my opinion, the real reason is simple... we are ruthless enough.”

”We can be ruthless towards nature; ruthless in putting any non-human race on experimental tables, dragging them into alchemy factories; ruthless in the way we slaughter each other, advancing through the bloodshed.”

”This world is beautiful, elegant, and orderly.”

”But it is also ruthless.”

”The brutal bloodshed and profound evil of the demons is nothing but chaos driven by instinct. It might win the world’s fleeting affection, but it lacks the power to truly possess the world... Only we, in our rationality, can make all kinds of cruel choices that reflect the cruelty of nature.”

”Demons, ghosts, spiritual beasts, even the projections of hell, the glory of deities...”

”We hunt them down, strip them of their essence, infuse it into our magical artifacts, utilize their natural abilities to expand our dull spiritual perception, thereby more easily communicating with the origin and releasing our own abilities.”

”And those souls, they never get any relief. Day after day they release their own resentment, without realizing that this resentment is the catalyst that allows these artifacts to be used repeatedly.”

”This kind of magical artifact, is the Law book in your hands.”

”Do you feel it’s cruel? Do you feel pity? Do you have an overflowing universal love?”

Old Yao raised his voice, questioning.

The classroom was silent. Everyone kept quiet, just watching the somewhat agitated professor.

Zheng Qing felt pity but the terrifying she-demon he met on the plane made him feel an unbearable throbbing in his forehead.

”Very good!”

Seemingly very satisfied with everyone’s reaction, Old Yao’s tone softened again:

”You must always remember your identity and give your limited love to your own kind. Universal love, in this cruel world, is utterly laughable.”

”Remember!”

”Don’t be idiotic enough to join something like the Law Book Liberation Association!”
