High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 313: Chapter 237: Nobility Syndrome_1

Perhaps it’s because of the bountiful legacy of their predecessors.

Perhaps it’s because the social ecology of wizards is highly developed.

Or maybe it’s just because of their well-fed idleness.

In the wizarding world, there exists such a group of people.

To them, magic based on the suffering of other beings is shameful and degrading. This highly selfish behavior that prioritizes self-interest should be eliminated from society. Good wizards must stand up and oppose this incorrect and evil action.

Are demons the enemies of wizards?

Yes, they are. But that doesn’t mean they should be tortured and soul extracted for their blood. Even if the demons cook wizard babies into soup and turn wizard brains into wine, wizards must not resort to equally brutal methods against the demons.

”After all, we are wizards, we are good and righteous wizards.”

”You have heard it said, ’Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well...Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you...”

The first time Zheng Qing heard about this group, he only had one adjective for them - sick.

Indeed, for young people who have been taught ’a gentleman’s revenge is never too late,’ and ’repay evil with justice, repay virtue with virtue,’ theories promoting ’extreme moral correctness’ are not at all appealing, even eliciting a certain degree of disgust.

After all, moral superiority is intangible, but if someone slaps you in the face and you don’t slap back, you’ll obviously be seen as a coward, and have to endure the torment of self-rejection.

The Alliance even coined a specific term to describe these wizards of ’extreme moral correctness’ - Noble Syndrome.

It refers to a condition rampant among those who have never experienced despair and live lives of luxury.

Zheng Qing does not have this condition.

He only learned about this term because not long ago he mentioned the status of little elves among his friends, and some people mocked him for having ’Noble Syndrome’.

Law Book Liberation Association is a very well-known loose group composed of wizards with ’Noble Syndrome’.

They run around all day, ardently promoting ’Naked Spells’, hoping other wizards would abandon the use of law books, an extremely inhumane tool, and use old methods like Hand Jue and seal forming in its stead.

Despite their small numbers, because they occupy the moral high ground, they always sway many wavering young wizards — some students at the First University even refused to use law books in their magic curse classes, even if such behavior would affect their grade points.

Professor Yao mentioned the name of this association in a fiery, critical tone, which obviously showed his attitude towards them.

Without waiting for the students beneath the podium to contemplate his intention, the professor bypassed the ’extra curricular content’ and turned the topic back to the residual issues from previous lessons:

”Now, do you know why you can’t cast the ’Guardian of the Original Morning’?”

The students in the classroom were taken aback, shaking their heads in unison.

”Still don’t understand?!” Old Yao frowned deeply, visibly upset. ”What don’t you understand? ... Casting spells requires vocalizing spell words, and pooling energy from the spells in the law book... I gave you a hint earlier... What’s the reason that you can’t cast this spell?”

Zheng Qing compared the detailed explanation and examples on ”Standard Spells” word by word, not missing a punctuation mark.

Then he confirmed that there was no problem with the spell analysis, logic, and conclusion of the spell.

With that, he recited the spell again:

”Granted fortune from heaven, to guard the life of the right!”

The sound was almost indistinguishable from the little figure in the textbook.

But the law book remained silent, not even a flicker of light shone from it.

Zheng Qing was at a loss and could only look up at the professor standing on the podium in confusion.

”Professor, is it a problem with the law book?” Li Meng raised her hand and asked worriedly.

”You have to discover it for yourselves.” Old Yao shook his head helplessly, his gaze falling on the wooden box next to the lectern, the pipe he was biting tilted slightly, his tone somewhat dissatisfied: ”I thought there would be no need to open the box.”

The students immediately widened their eyes.

Everyone was extremely curious about what was inside the box.

Xin Fat Man suspected that a copper-armored zombie was crammed inside the box to serve as the opponent for this lesson’s spell practice. He showed his glowing Five-Color Peach Talisman to the people around him and confidently claimed it was reacting to the presence of an evil zombie.

Zhang Ji Xin was more cautious, as he had not heard his elder brother mention any precedent of professors bringing zombies to the classroom. Because the box was heavy, he guessed there might be some sort of valuable alchemy machinery inside.

However, as the lid of the box was lifted, many people let out sounds of disappointment.

There were no fairies flitting about, no gloomy, vicious zombies. It wasn’t even the Magic House (a type of space equipment: it had a huge internal space and could serve as a temporary Wizard’s tower) that most people had guessed.

It was just an ordinary wooden box, packed to the brim with books.

To be precise, all sorts of Law Books.

”Given your shallow understanding of Law Books, I believe you all need to focus more on these magical tools,” Professor Yao fished out a small cluster of golden tobacco from his pocket, stuffed it into his pipe, and patiently added: ”Interacting with different Law Books can effectively enhance your ability to communicate with them.”

”This is crucial for harmonizing the Law Books and the spells.”

He placed the pipe in his mouth, took several heavy puffs, and with thick blue smoke billowing out, the professor continued: ”The subject of Magic Spells does not mainly rely on superior talent, it’s more about patience, meticulousness, and self-confidence.”

”These you will gradually appreciate in your future studies... Now, you have a new exercise.”

”This is your homework for today.”

”Line up to come forward and collect a Law Book, then copy a Binding Spell on it... Does anyone not yet know the Binding Spell?” The professor suddenly raised his head, asked very seriously.

The students uniformly shook their heads.

”Very good,” the professor responded, nodding with satisfaction, ”Then find an opponent and copy a Binding Spell into their Law Book too.”

Zheng Qing nudged Doctor Xiao who was sitting next to him with his elbow, but his gaze involuntarily drifted to the Gypsy witches in the front row on the right side of the classroom.

He sighed dejectedly.

”Finally, open your own Law Book and copy down a Binding Spell as well.” The professor tapped the blackboard with his knuckles, and three colored chalks danced joyously on the board, drawing a three-color chart.

”Each of you needs to use these three different Law Books to cast the same spell.”

”I want you to seriously perceive the subtle differences... use your patience and meticulousness that you would when brewing magic potion or doing divination and feel the difference.”

”Then follow the chart on the blackboard, fill it in, and analyze the differences that you feel.”

”Before Wednesday’s philosophy class, I want to receive your analysis reports.”

Before leaving the classroom, Old Yao suddenly turned around and knocked on the door of the classroom, drawing everyone’s attention back to him:

”Uh, I have a suggestion... I recommend the boys find girls, and girls find boys. It’s better if it’s mixed genders. Because generally, you might be more sensitive to the fluctuations of Law Books of the opposite sex. It will make the analysis report easier.”

The boys looked at each other, weird smiles on their faces.

Zheng Qing, however, was instantly energized and his eyes darted quickly toward the front row of the classroom.

Heaven has helped me!, he cheered inwardly, dozens of strategies to strike up a conversation with Elena flashed through his mind. He even extended it into a plan to give her the skirt.

”Looks like I need to find another partner for practice,” Doctor Xiao’s gloomy voice rang up next to him.

Zheng Qing blinked, wrenching out a hollow smile on his face.

Just before the eager atmosphere that had been brewing in the classroom could erupt, Professor Yao once again pushed the doors open and stood in front of everybody.

”Sorry,” he squinted, the usual smile on his face: ”I almost forgot... there’s a school opening ceremony in the afternoon in the first hall... no one is allowed to be late.”

”Understood!”

”Tang Dun, you and Jiang Yu, come with me to my office,” the professor beckoned: ”I will tell you about the arrangements for the afternoon...”
