Chapter 1324: Chapter 567: The Times Create Heroes

This is why during the imperial election, the forty-five-year-old Boris Todbringer was favored over the thirty-two-year-old Carl Franz by the Prince-Electors.

Moreover, Boris Prince-Elector’s talents were evident in his years of ruling; he accumulated considerable prestige and connections, excelling in economic trade, cultural development, technology, diplomacy, and military areas. He implemented democratic policies within his territory; although he enacted the laws, he recruited many professional advisors. Merchants, craftsmen, religious figures, and others from various backgrounds could directly present suggestions from different classes through the City Council. Under Boris’s management, White Wolf City transformed into a harmonious, free, and prosperous international metropolis. Even the living standards and environmental quality of the impoverished areas surpassed most cities in the empire, which is rare in the Old World and throughout the Mortal World.

”That matter... we’ll discuss it later.” Alfred was indeed somewhat excited. After considering it carefully, he shook his head: ”What I need to do now is to be loyal to my duties. Since you have granted the Freya Ancient Church District and the nearby lands to me, I must fulfill my obligations and restore that land to its former glory.”

”Well, Afu, it’s good that you think this way.” Laine nodded repeatedly; he contemplated before deciding to speak: ”I can’t spare any troops to help you now; you’ll have to rely on yourself.”

”No problem, I still have dozens of Paladins and Ascetic Monks under my command.” Alfred nodded. These people were sent by his superior, the Great Chant Master, from the Justice Church headquarters in Brunswick after Alfred wrote a letter seeking assistance. Although they arrived late and missed the war, they are now ready to be utilized.

The Freya Ancient Church District is located in the central part of the Duchy of Musillon, north of the Sharp-Top Palace, in a relatively peaceful swamp surrounded by small hills. It encompasses an entire ancient church district, which was previously a sacred area used by the High Elves for rituals. When the High Elves retreated from the Old World, the Old Faith inherited this area (the Old Faith refers to humanity’s primitive belief in nature, worshiping it as a whole rather than any specific deities).

As time passed, the Old Faith faded due to the absence of specific divine figures, clear doctrines, divine grace, and missionary efforts. At this time, the famous Mother Goddess ”Freya,” who is the wife of the God of Nature Tal, and the Natural Sect under these deities took over this location, forming the renowned Freya Ancient Church District.

This is Alfred’s fiefdom.

There is a sturdy monastery built of granite and slate here. Originally, three Corpse Demon Kings led a small Undead Army living in this place. Once the entire monastery was cleared, Alfred and his subordinates could quickly settle here. The two thousand Gold Crowns given by Laine were enough for Alfred to swiftly rebuild this area and resume production.

Laine’s current large-scale feudal grant is actually a helpless move.

The drawbacks of the feudal system do not need much explanation. Feudal nobles inherently have lower mobilization and tax contributions, but the system’s benefit lies in Laine distributing these lands so he doesn’t have to manage them. Those knightly nobles granted land will naturally strive and invest their savings to restore production and construction. This could never be achieved if Laine was handling everything himself. If he could manage these duties when he was a Baron or Count, it is impossible for him to oversee the entire Duke’s Domain when he becomes Duke.

Besides, the knightly nobility under Laine has fought alongside him for years, winning constantly and gaining knowledge and experience. Whether it is the army or the nobility under Laine’s command now, they are capable warriors deserving their own rewards.

Under Laine’s rising prestige, a single command from him will guide these knightly nobles accordingly, ensuring full mobilization of the military. This is personal prestige; at least as long as Laine is in his position, he need not worry about disobedience from the knightly nobility. This is an impatient yet inevitable approach.

Current circumstances create heroes; Brittania’s southern region, led by Laine, has constantly won victories. Following a series of wars, many capable knightly nobles have emerged and are well remembered by the people of the Mortal World.

From Lops, who followed him from Marinburg, to the brave and skillful cavalry leader Olivier, infantry commander Hex, and tactical strategist Lucian, all have gained significant fame in the Old World. Now, Alfred, who achieved the greatest success in reclaiming Musillon, is expected to be recognized by the Mortal World soon.

”Nothing wins subordinates’ hearts like generous rewards.”

– Emperor of the Empire ”Iron Cross” William III

”By the way, Duke Laine, what will become of the Duke of Leonais and Duke of Montfort titles? Are they still vacant?” The imperial side showed interest; while Leonais was manageable, Axe Bite Pass was crucial for trade between the empire and Brittania, making the Duke of Montfort’s selection significant.
