Chapter 1412: Chapter 1413: You Can’t Be Foolish

When heading out of the camp to find Ye Zhi, Gong Juechen didn’t hold back at all. When he returned from the mountains, Gong Juechen had already anticipated what would happen, which was why he remained so composed.

But if these twenty military cudgels were to land on his heart’s dearest... That simply wouldn’t do!

Ye Zhi still refused to move aside.

Xiao Changyi said, ”Obstructing the enforcement of military law, Deputy General Ye, are you intending to get twenty military cudgels alongside Military Doctor Gong?”

In other words, Gong Juechen had made up his mind. As for you, you can choose to be punished alongside Gong Juechen, or choose not to be punished.

Ye Zhi was someone who valued loyalty and camaraderie deeply. Seeing someone punished because of her, she would definitely feel uneasy. Rather than that, she might as well endure the punishment alongside that person. That way, she’d feel a bit better about it.

Gong Juechen knew Ye Zhi very well. The moment he heard Xiao Changyi’s words, he grew even more anxious, saying, ”Zhizhi, you absolutely mustn’t stupidly endure the punishment with me. If you feel guilty, you can just take extra care of me while I recover. There’s no need to suffer the cudgels with me.”

Ye Zhi had originally intended to endure the punishment with Gong Juechen, but after hearing his words, she realized there was no real significance in doing so. It would be better to follow Gong Juechen’s suggestion and take extra care of him during his recovery.

Thus, Ye Zhi stepped aside.

Even though she moved out of the way, letting two soldiers drag Gong Juechen off for punishment, deep down, Ye Zhi couldn’t accept Gong Juechen taking those twenty military cudgels. She felt an intense sorrow.

The twenty military cudgels—those administering the punishment showed no mercy. Gong Juechen’s backside was beaten until it bled.

Ye Zhi understood that Xiao Changyi had no choice but to act this way, yet seeing Gong Juechen beaten to such a degree made her resentful of Xiao Changyi. Because of this, she didn’t speak to Xiao Changyi and simply threw the terrain map she had drawn from her arms to him.

Then, she helped Gong Juechen away.

Xiao Changyi watched as Ye Zhi and Gong Juechen disappeared from his sight, then glanced down at the partial terrain map of the area surrounding Jingye City in his hands. Afterward, he ascended the city tower, standing there, expressionless, staring into the mountains beside Jingye City.

Yesterday’s torrential rain had him deeply worried about his wife, so much so that he had spent the entire night sleepless.

He still didn’t know how his dear wife was doing now.

Xiao Changyi didn’t stand on the city tower for long. After a short while, seeing no sign of his wife, he descended.

He went to find Gong Juechen.

After all, he still had things to ask Gong Juechen.

When Xiao Changyi approached Gong Juechen’s quarters, Ye Zhi was in the middle of applying medicine to Gong Juechen’s wounded backside.

Gong Juechen, with a playful grin on his face, showed no hint of embarrassment—if anything, he seemed to rather enjoy Ye Zhi treating his injuries.

In contrast, Ye Zhi, who was applying the medicine, was blushing bright red.

Although Xiao Changyi had ordered him to take twenty military cudgels, Gong Juechen didn’t hold a shred of resentment toward Xiao Changyi.

As soon as he saw Xiao Changyi walking in, Gong Juechen grinned cheekily and asked him, ”Changyi, didn’t we just part ways? Why are you here to see me again?”

Xiao Changyi didn’t respond, only taking a seat on a nearby chair.

After Ye Zhi finished applying the medicine and saw that Xiao Changyi still neither spoke nor left, she realized that Xiao Changyi wanted to speak with Gong Juechen alone. Thus, she left Gong Juechen’s quarters under the pretense of going to check on Shi Shi and the others.

Shi Shi, Su Chengyuan, Lie Qi, Shi Hua, and Ting Shu had already returned, having come back to Xilin City last evening. Shi Shi’s twisted ankle had been treated by the doctor; there was no serious issue. A few days of rest would be enough for her to recover.
