Peaceful Farm Life

Chapter 1408: Chapter 1409: It’s Me Who Hurts...

Her face was small, with extraordinarily delicate features. Her eyelashes were particularly long, and under the flickering firelight, she looked even more stunning.

Gong Juechen’s peach blossom eyes lingered on Ye Zhi for a long moment before his gaze softened with indulgence, a bitter smile crossing his lips: ”Zhizhi, if you keep scaring me like this, I might really be frightened to death by you.”

After a while.

Gong Juechen finally muttered in a low voice, ”If I were to die, you’d probably be very sad, wouldn’t you?”

Those words seemed confident, but in truth, he wasn’t entirely certain in his heart.

His Zhizhi still didn’t want to marry him; she probably hadn’t fallen for him yet. Sigh...

Just as Gong Juechen sighed inwardly, he heard the sound of a snake hissing, causing him to turn his head quickly. By the entrance of the cave, near the medicinal powder, there was a rather thick and long snake flicking its tongue. It appeared to want to enter but was deterred by the scent of the powder and seemed ready to leave.

”Perfect timing. I was just wondering what I could make for my Zhizhi to eat.” Gong Juechen’s lips curved into a devilish smirk, and with a flick of his hand, three Silver Needles flew out, simultaneously piercing the snake’s vital points.

The needles hit the fatal spot, and the snake struggled for a while before succumbing, its movements fading into stillness.

Only then did Gong Juechen let go of Ye Zhi, walked over, and took out a particularly sharp small knife. Squatting at the entrance of the cave, he deftly cleaned the snake under the pouring rain outside.

Once the snake was thoroughly cleaned, Gong Juechen skewered it onto a tree branch.

He returned to sit beside Ye Zhi, gently pulling her to lie on his lap while wrapping one arm around her. He then extended the snake toward the fire to roast.

The sky had turned completely dark, but the rain outside continued incessantly, falling with an overwhelming force.

Ye Zhi was woken by the enticing smell of roasted snake meat.

As she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was a hand roasting snake meat over the fire. Through the glow of the flames, she noticed the skin on that hand was torn in multiple places, revealing patches of red and white flesh underneath.

Whose hand was so severely injured?

Ye Zhi frowned and instinctively turned her head, looking up to see whose hand it belonged to.

But when her gaze landed on Gong Juechen’s face, she was momentarily taken aback, then muttered under her breath, ”Another dream...”

Feeling the person resting on his lap stir, Gong Juechen was overjoyed, realizing Ye Zhi had woken up. But before he could say anything, he heard her murmur ’another dream,’ which amused him deeply: ”Zhizhi, you’re not dreaming.”

”If it’s not a dream, then why are you here?” Ye Zhi murmured in response, still lying on Gong Juechen’s lap, her head tilted upward to look at him, her demeanor calm—as if she truly believed she was dreaming.

Gong Juechen didn’t answer directly; instead, he flashed a mischievous grin and said, ”Since this is a dream and not real, why don’t we share a kiss?”

Saying this, Gong Juechen even leaned his face closer, as if he were really about to kiss Ye Zhi.

Ye Zhi raised her hand and slapped Gong Juechen across the face.

”Ow! Zhizhi...” Gong Juechen covered his face with one hand, looking at Ye Zhi with exaggerated grievance.

Ye Zhi sat up from Gong Juechen’s lap, her voice nonchalant as she remarked, ”If it hurts, then I guess this isn’t a dream after all.”

”Zhizhi, I’m the one hurting...” Gong Juechen kindly pointed out the truth to her. Without waiting for Ye Zhi’s response, he once again resumed his playful demeanor, ”Better me hurting than you~”

Ye Zhi shot Gong Juechen a sidelong glance before surveying her surroundings. After finishing her examination, she recalled the landslide incident and frowned as she asked again, ”Why are you here?”
