Chapter 1407: Chapter 1408: Ye Zhi Isn’t Dead

Upon discovering that Ye Zhi was breathing again, Gong Juechen burst into tears of joy, laughing and crying at the same time.

His heart, which had been cold and lifeless, was instantly revived.

”Zhizhi... Zhizhi...” Gong Juechen looked at Ye Zhi, laughing and crying. The overwhelming emotion of regaining what he had lost left him at a loss for words, so he could only keep calling Ye Zhi’s name over and over.

Su Chengyuan and the others saw Gong Juechen checking Ye Zhi’s breath and even laughing through his tears. Although they were still crying themselves, they too realized that Ye Zhi had likely not died, and the group immediately broke into smiles.

She’s not dead. She’s not dead.

The heat emanating from Ye Zhi’s body made it impossible for Gong Juechen to simply sit there holding her in the rain. Without hesitation, Gong Juechen lifted Ye Zhi in his arms and started heading down the mountain.

”Palace doctor!” The female soldiers called out to Gong Juechen, but he didn’t look back or respond.

His Zhizhi’s body was heating up, likely from catching a cold; he had to quickly find a place to shelter from the rain.

When he climbed up the mountain earlier, he thought he’d seen a cave. Now it could finally come in handy.

Shi Shi, having fallen from a height along with the soil, had twisted both of her feet slightly. Su Chengyuan and the others chose not to follow Gong Juechen, who only took Ye Zhi with him, and instead supported Shi Shi, making their way down the mountain together as five.

Gong Juechen carried Ye Zhi into the cave, sprinkling pest control powder at the entrance to keep snakes, insects, and rodents from coming inside.

The cave wasn’t deep, but it was more than spacious enough to accommodate Gong Juechen and Ye Zhi. Inside, there was plenty of dry firewood.

There were also faint traces of an old fire pit.

The marks were barely visible, covered in moss. This place had likely been visited by someone long ago, who had hidden here in the past.

Gong Juechen gently placed Ye Zhi down, leaning her against the cave wall, seated on the ground. Then he gathered some dry wood and made a small pile beside Ye Zhi. Taking out a flint from inside his robe, he struck it and lit the pile of wood.

Once the fire was burning steadily, Gong Juechen added more firewood to the flames, letting them blaze bigger and brighter.

Soon after, Gong Juechen left the cave and brought back some large tree branches, using them to block the entrance and shield them from the wind.

The branches were lush with leaves, and once stacked tightly, they were able to keep much of the wind and cold air from entering the cave.

The cave grew warmer now.

Having finished blocking the entrance, Gong Juechen walked back to Ye Zhi’s side. Seeing her cheeks flushed from fever and her clothes drenched, he knew that leaving her like this would only worsen her condition.

Without hesitation, Gong Juechen removed Ye Zhi’s wet clothing entirely and disrobed himself as well, placing her on his lap and holding her against his chest.

While cradling Ye Zhi, he began drying her clothes over the fire.

Once her clothes were dry, Gong Juechen dressed her in them again, but he didn’t let her leave his embrace. Still holding her tightly, he began drying his own clothes.

Having endured the agony of heartbreak and despair, even though he had regained her for a while now, Gong Juechen still felt lingering fears.

He worried that something might happen to Ye Zhi again. Keeping her in his arms gave him peace of mind.

When his own clothes were fully dry, Gong Juechen finally loosened his hold on Ye Zhi to get dressed.

Once he had finished dressing, he immediately pulled Ye Zhi back into his arms, holding her tightly once more.

Ye Zhi still hadn’t awakened.

Though her body remained slightly warm, her breathing was steady, suggesting she wasn’t in any serious danger.

Gong Juechen sat there, his back leaning against the cave wall. He didn’t look at the fire burning before him; instead, he lowered his head to gaze at the person in his embrace.
