Flash Marriage: He is a Wife-pampering Addict

Chapter 789: 788 I will check it myself

Mo Xiuchen followed Gu Kai into the office, scanning the room before sitting on the couch.

Wen Jin also came over and sat on another sofa. Gu Kai poured a glass of water for Mo Xiuchen before calmly sitting down next to Wen Jin, saying, “Mo Xiuchen, if you came to ask about your past, all I can say is I don’t know. No need to ask further.”

Mo Xiuchen said nothing, he picked up his glass with elegance, took a sip of water, held the glass in his hand, and looked at Gu Kai and Wen Jin. “Ranran refuses to tell me about the past, and now you follow suit, claiming ignorance. Ah Kai, am I right to understand that there is something you feel obliged to keep secret?”

Wen Jin slightly changed his gaze before speaking, “Actually, there’s no need for you to ask anybody. Understanding your past should not come from a few words from others. If we lie, we could mislead you.”

The implication was that he couldn’t trust anyone.

Not only what they had said, but also what his father Mo Jingteng and his fiancée Cheng Jia, had said.

...
Hearing Wen Jin’s hint, Gu Kai nodded, “Mo Xiuchen, Ah Jin is right. Our words may not necessarily represent the truth. You should trust your own feelings.”

Mo Xiuchen looked at Wen Jin and Gu Kai, hearing their synchronized remarks, he let out a bitter humph, “What was my relationship with Ranran in the past?”

“Mo Xiuchen, what do you think your relationship with Ranran could be?”

Gu Kai responded with a question, a smile playing on his lips.

Mo Xiuchen frowned, the image of the distressed Ranran appeared before him, he couldn’t help but tense up, “If I knew, I wouldn’t have to ask you. Ah Kai, Ranran is your sister, you probably wouldn’t want to see her upset, right?”

“Yes.”

Gu Kai reeled in his emotions and nodded solemnly.

Of course, he doesn’t want Ranran to be upset, but that’s more contingent on Mo Xiuchen’s absence, because only then Ranran could truly be happy.

Mo Xiuchen continued to ask, “Since you don’t want Ranran to be upset, why aren’t you willing to tell me about the past and explain the nature of my relationship with Ranran? Could it be that I have done something in the past that hurt Ranran?”

Gu Kai shook his head, “Mo Xiuchen, I can’t tell you. Please don’t ask us anymore, try to find out through other ways.”

Mo Xiuchen’s handsome face shifted, seeing Gu Kai’s determination to not say anything, he coldly stared at him.

After a while of silence, Mo Xiuchen finally lost patience. Seeing that he was wasting time there, he stood up, saying, “I will find out myself,” before leaving.

As he left the hospital, Mo Xiuchen glanced back at the building, his thin lips pressed tight.

His intention in finding Gu Kai was not to learn anything, but to confirm his suspicions.

As expected, they told him nothing. The man accompanying Gu Kai even warned him not to easily believe others.

He was no fool. He knew they were referring to his father, Mo Jingteng, and Cheng Jia.

**

Half an hour later, Mo Xiuchen was dialing Cheng Jia from a restaurant.

Cheng Jia had told him her home address before returning to China, so he purposely chose a restaurant not too close nor too far from her place.

If she walked, it would take about ten minutes or so.

He sat near the window on the second floor, his tall figure lazily reclining on the chair, a phone in one hand, and the other gently stroking a glass. When he heard Cheng Jia’s joyful voice, a cold smile drew upon his lips, his voice emerging crisp and cool, “I’m at a Szechuan restaurant not far from your place, come over now.”

“Mo Xiuchen, are you back in the country?”

Cheng Jia was deliberately enthusiastic on the other side of the phone.

Mo Xiuchen scoffed to himself, speaking nonchalantly, “Yes, I’m back. The sun isn’t too harsh today, so don’t bother with a cab. You need to give your legs some exercise, walk over here. I will come to pick you up in a bit.”

“Okay, Mo Xiuchen, I’ll leave now.”

Cheng Jia could hardly contain her happiness, especially when Mo Xiuchen suggested he would pick her up; she was ecstatic.

Mo Xiuchen’s smile deepened, his tone pleasing, “Then hurry up.”

After hanging up the phone, he picked up the glass and took a sip of water gracefully. He looked out the window at the scenery of the city he once lived in but had no memories of.

After the waiter served the food, Mo Xiuchen sat eating while pondering if Cheng Jia would find the walk from her house exhausting, and if she could sprain her ankle again.

She was probably looking forward to a romantic walk, unaware of his lies. He wondered what her reaction would be when she found out.

Thinking about Cheng Jia’s phone call this morning and whatever she must have said to Ranran that made her suddenly change her mind, he felt a pang in his heart and disliked Cheng Jia even more.

Cheng Jia arrived in no time, considering her injury.

After ten minutes or so, she appeared in Mo Xiuchen’s line of sight. Just as he looked out, he saw Cheng Jia fall, unsure if she had truly tripped or was putting on a show.

She got up, crossed the road, and walked into the restaurant.

After coming in front of Mo Xiuchen, she looked at him with joy, “Mo Xiuchen, when did you come back?”

Mo Xiuchen’s gaze skimmed over her, his brows furrowed slightly and he questioned, “What is that on your clothes?”

Cheng Jia paused, looked down and saw the dirt on her clothes, she immediately revealed an embarrassed expression, “Mo Xiuchen, I accidentally tripped earlier.”

“Really, I wanted to come and pick you up, but as I was extremely hungry, I started eating while waiting for you. How did you trip? You didn’t take a cab here, did you?”

Mo Xiuchen arched an eyebrow, smile forming at the corner of his mouth. This expression was a heart-stirring sight for Cheng Jia.

When she didn’t answer, engrossed in looking at him, the smile on Mo Xiuchen’s face faded, his features turning cold. He said indifferently, “Let’s eat first. I’ve ordered the signature dishes of this restaurant. Try it and see if it’s good.”

Only then did Cheng Jia remove her gaze from his face and notice the delicious dishes spread all over the table. Her face changed slightly, a hint of fear in her eyes.

She never ate spicy food.

However, Mo Xiuchen had chosen a Szechuan restaurant, one of G City’s renowned spicy food places. The authentic spicy flavors were undeniable; she found it hard to handle just the smell of it, let alone eat it.

She bit her lip and said with an apologetic look, “Mo Xiuchen, my leg isn’t fully healed yet, so I can’t eat spicy food. I’ll accompany you instead.”

Mo Xiuchen frowned, clearly displeased, “There’s no fun eating alone. I called you out to have a meal. If you don’t want to eat, you can go back.”

Upon hearing these words, Cheng Jia immediately looked a shade paler.

Mo Xiuchen had always been cold and distant to her, rarely initiating any dining invitations. If he became annoyed because she didn’t eat, he would probably ignore her even more in the future.
