Flash Marriage: He is a Wife-pampering Addict

Chapter 787: 786 is related to me, right?

Wen Ran glanced at him, pressed the answer key, and indifferently uttered, “Hello?”.

Mo Xiuchen leaned his slim figure into the chair, his hands casually resting on top of his legs, long fingers slightly curved, slackly projecting an air of indifference between his brows.

Not wanting him to hear the call, Wen Ran purposefully used her left hand to hold the cellphone, placing it against her left ear. As her words fell, the voice of Cheng Jia came up from the other side of the phone to question, “Wen Ran, are you with Mo Xiuchen?”

The moment Wen Ran pressed the answer key, she had guessed that Cheng Jia was calling because of Mo Xiuchen.

Sure enough, just as she thought.

She lightly pursed her lips, her voice calmly indifferent: “Cheng Jia, aren’t you bored? I’m working and don’t have time to chat with you.”

...
“Wen Ran, you can’t fool me, Mo Xiuchen is back in the country but has not returned home. He is not even in G City. You tell me, is he with you? Where did you two go?”

“I can’t be bothered with you.”

Once Wen Ran finished, she was about to hang up the phone, but Cheng Jia’s threatening words once more flowed into her ears, sharp like a curse; “Wen Ran, don’t forget, you’ve sworn a poisonous oath. If you break that oath, he will meet a horrible end.”

The last two characters carried a particular emphasis in her tone.

The words hit Wen Ran’s ear, each one like a needle stabbing into her heart, causing her body to become rigid, gripping her phone tighter.

The delicate paleness that rose from her fine face was abnormal. Beside her, Mo Xiuchen’s handsome eyebrows lightly furrowed, an unease flitted through the depths of his unfathomable pupils, and the corners of his lips pulled tighter.

He didn’t know what Cheng Jia had said to Wen Ran, but seeing her face, it definitely wasn’t anything good.

Realizing this, a chilling light gathered at the bottom of his eyes, Mo Xiuchen began to speculate, what would Cheng Jia say to Wen Ran?

If his guess wasn’t wrong, it must be related to him. Although Wen Ran only glanced at him when she answered the phone and then straightened herself to gaze straight ahead.

Yet, he managed to pick up on the mournful air that suddenly enveloped her, his heart involuntarily tightened slightly.

With Mo Xiuchen sitting next to her, there were many things Wen Ran couldn’t say.

Pressing her lips together tightly, she tried to suppress the swarming emotions in her heart, and slowly declared, her voice cold: “I don’t need you to remind me of what I should do, Cheng Jia. If you’re brave enough, stop calling me.”

Having said that, she didn’t give Cheng Jia another opportunity to make an uproar, instantly hanging up the call.

There was a moment of tranquility in the enclosed car cabin.

The hand Wen Ran used to grip her phone did not loosen in the slightest. Her fine, elegant face had turned an alarming shade of pale, and despite the sadness in her eyes being faint, it still caused the person beside her to feel an intense sense of tension.

“Ranran, what did Cheng Jia say to you?”

From the passenger seat, Mo Xiuchen stared at her for a moment before breaking the silence.

Leaning slightly forward in his chair, his gaze gentle yet worried. However, he didn’t know that the more he behaved this way, the sadder Wen Ran felt inside.

She couldn’t control her heart. Knowing full well that she shouldn’t get entangled with him any further, yet she was irresistibly drawn to him.

She didn’t know if others would uphold their oaths after making them. But she had sworn a poisonous oath invoking all the people she held dear. She couldn’t bear such a heavy price.

Taking a deep breath, when she turned to look at Mo Xiuchen, the sadness in her eyes was gone, replaced by a calm indifferent gaze. However, her voice was no longer as gentle and soft as before, instead, it carried a hint of distance: “I have something to take care of. I can’t accompany you around City C today. You can keep using the car. Whenever you leave, you can return it to me. I hope you enjoy your time in City C.”

“Ranran!”

Just as Wen Ran turned to open the car door and get out, her right arm was abruptly grabbed by Mo Xiuchen.

In the summer weather, her clothing was thin, and the warmth from his palm seeped through the thin layer of fabric into her skin. Her heart suddenly skipped a beat.

Her body, in that moment, became rigid.

She didn’t dare to turn her head and meet his gaze, merely pressing her lips together obstinately, her watery pupils looking straight ahead, landing on nothing in particular.

Next to her, Mo Xiuchen, leaning slightly forward, his unfathomable deep pupils were fixed on her, his lips slightly parting, his voice low and magnetic, asking: “Ranran, can you tell me what Cheng Jia said to you?”

Wen Ran shook her head, her gaze fell towards the rear-view mirror.

“It involves me, doesn’t it?”

Seeing her unwillingness to say, Mo Xiuchen answered for her.

Wen Ran remained silent, the sorrow in her heart spreading to every limb, weaving its way into every cell of her body.

How could she tell him that Cheng Jia had threatened her life, forced her to give up on him, and even made her make an oath…

“Ranran, I know…there are many things you’re keeping from me. The photo on your phone screensaver is a picture of us, which means that our past relationship was very close. Ranran…”

“Don’t say anymore.”

Wen Ran suddenly interrupted Mo Xiuchen, turning her head to look at him, her eyes glistened with the threat of tears. She was doing her best to control her emotions, but her voice still couldn’t maintain its calm.

Seeing Mo Xiuchen’s face change slightly, she experienced a sharp pain in her chest. Taking an arguably deep breath, her tone slowing, she said, “Xiuchen, don’t ask about the past, and don’t look for me anymore.”

“Why?”

Mo Xiuchen’s face shifted, his gaze riveted on her.

“There is no why. Even if we had a past once upon a time, it’s all in the past. Now, we have no ties whatsoever. Xiuchen, I’m sorry.”

With these words, Wen Ran forcefully shook off his hand, opened the car door and dashed out of the car, disappearing into the apartment building.

Mo Xiuchen did not follow.

His eyes were stung by the sight of the unshed tears in her eyes. He couldn’t describe why, but seeing her in so much sorrow, his heart ached.

Her calls of “Xiuchen” carried sorrow so thick it was as if she still deeply loved him, yet knew that it was impossible for them to be together in this lifetime. That kind of pain actually made his heart ache in sympthy.

Yet, he still couldn’t remember the past.

Watching Wen Ran’s disappearing figure, Mo Xiuchen’s thin lips pressed into a tight line. After some hesitation, he got out of the car as well.

After locking the car, he took the keys and entered the apartment, going up to the apartment and ringing the doorbell.

After waiting for a while with no one answering, his face shifted, he took out his phone to dial Wen Ran’s number. A few seconds later, her voice came from inside, filled with sobs: “Hello.”

“Ranran, open the door. I won’t do anything, I just want to return the car keys to you.”

Mo Xiuchen’s eyebrows knit slightly as he spoke in a gentle tone.

He knew that Wen Ran wouldn’t tell him the reason and he would have to return to G City to find Cheng Jia.

Originally, he wasn’t in a hurry to find out about his past from others. He wanted to follow his own feelings, to listen to his heart.

But just now, seeing how upset Wen Ran looked and the tears in her eyes, he suddenly didn’t want to wait anymore.

He wanted to know as soon as possible what had happened in the past. Why was it that his feelings were clearly for Wen Ran, the person inside, yet the person who had been by his side all these days was Cheng Jia?
