Chapter 2514: Chapter 2515: Asking Pu Ru for Help

Xinye looked shocked, ”Did the coroner say I sent him?”

”Not exactly, Jiang Yichun and I went quietly, and at the time we had to hide, we saw him tampering with the body. The situation was unclear, so I didn’t directly approach him,” Bai Ruozhu replied.

”It wasn’t arranged by Lord Luzhi. He didn’t mention it to me, and he doesn’t even know I’ve secretly kept a Shadow Ninja. Given his nature, even if our relationship is close, he’d hand me over to General Chisong for punishment at most, or plead for leniency for me,” Xinye said.

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t figure it out. If it wasn’t Xinye’s people or Luzhi’s, then who was secretly helping Xinye?

”Isn’t there anyone secretly helping you?” Bai Ruozhu asked, ”Someone skilled with poisons or a prestigious family?”

Xinye shook his head, ”My family is in decline, as you can see.”

Bai Ruozhu mused silently. Clearly, Xinye didn’t know the situation, and no amount of questioning would yield anything helpful.

Before long, Jiang Yichun returned with tea. Seeing Bai Ruozhu deep in thought with a sullen face, he dared not disturb her.

Bai Ruozhu snapped back to reality, stood up, and said, ”I’ll head back now. Contact me if anything comes up.”

With that, she left quickly. Jiang Yichun glanced at the untouched tea on the table, feeling more puzzled.

”What’s up with Bai?” he asked.

Xinye opened his mouth, intending to explain the coroner issue that Bai Ruozhu brought up but felt a bitter taste. He thought she’d say something related to him, but it turned out otherwise.

No, or maybe it did relate to him, just not in a way that showed concern for him.

He really did overthink things.

Xinye smiled wryly, feeling that Bai Ruozhu’s questions were not suitable to discuss with others, so he said nothing more to Jiang Yichun.

Jiang Yichun noticed his conflicted expression, feeling even more confused.

...

Bai Ruozhu returned to the posthouse. Jiang Yichun and others inquired about the situation. She shook her head, ”Xinye doesn’t know, and he’s very sure it’s not someone sent by Luzhi. This person is quite peculiar.”

The group made various guesses: someone behind the Xinye family, or an admirer of Xinye, but Bai Ruozhu felt none of these was likely. So, it seemed this person was somehow related to them.

With no leads, she could only put the issue aside.

The next day, Jiang Yichun and Mo Beishan continued tracing the Black Boss and his gang, while Bai Ruozhu took Yizi to Zhaoti Temple.

She reexamined Master Puru, who had trained in martial arts and heart methods, making him more robust than ordinary people and allowing for a quicker recovery.

However, the fire had disfigured him, and even with scar-removing medicine, it was challenging for a complete recovery.

Bai Ruozhu gave some of the ointment she previously gave Aunt Zhang to Master Puru. Master Puru, however, laughed, ”Physical appearance is superficial. It doesn’t matter.”

”I understand you don’t care about appearances, but if these injuries improve, it would be better, or your skin will be fragile, making weather changes uncomfortable. Why not heal thoroughly?” Bai Ruozhu suggested.

Master Puru finally accepted the medicine and expressed deep gratitude to Bai Ruozhu, saying, ”I’ve received your help multiple times, and I’m deeply indebted. If you ever need my assistance, just ask.”

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”I won’t be too polite. There is indeed something I need your help with.”

Master Puru looked serious, clearly ready to agree.

Bai Ruozhu continued, ”I’d like you to use the heart method to assess a few people: the Crown Prince, Prince Wen De, and Princess Ya’an.”

Master Puru appeared surprised, ”Why this idea? My master’s last words were to test before the next Emperor ascends the throne, not to test others. Wouldn’t it...”

”Master, your master didn’t say it couldn’t be done on others, right? Moreover, this concerns the emperor’s succession. Are you really at ease? You’ve previously encountered a large setup against you, do you think it would stop?” Bai Ruozhu questioned.

”This...” Master Puru hesitated but after contemplating, he nodded, ”Alright, I’ll find an opportunity to look into it.”

”By the way, if one learned the heart method of Zhaoti Temple, can anyone perform the tests?” Bai Ruozhu asked. She imagined more than one person might have learned this heart method.

”Not exactly.” Master Puru patiently explained, ”At Zhaoti Temple, only the abbot’s direct disciples have the chance to learn this heart method. Besides, my master left a key phrase, which he said should only be passed to the next abbot. I initially thought it was a special technique, but found no answers. With the recent events, I used this phrase to get results.”

Bai Ruozhu realized that everything was arranged beforehand by the previous temple abbot.

”Rest assured, Bai. Give me a few days, I’ll try investigating,” Master Puru said.

”Then I must ask the Master for this hard work.” Bai Ruozhu bowed and left the abbot’s room, only to see Yizi talking to a small child, a cute little monk. Noticing Bai Ruozhu, he gazed at her with a sweet smile.

The little monk was probably five or six years old, with delicate features, bright eyes, leaving one curious about his future appearance. Bai Ruozhu immediately recalled a movie monk from a past life and couldn’t resist hurrying over to pinch the little monk’s cheek, ”Where did this little monk come from, joining the monastery so young?”

The little monk, cheek pinched, blushed with embarrassment as if teased by Bai Ruozhu.

Yizi couldn’t help but laugh, making the little monk more embarrassed, and he turned to leave.

”Master, you’re bullying a child,” Yizi teased with a grin.

”Yizi, you’ve become quite cheeky. What’s wrong with a little pinch? I didn’t pinch him hard, and at his age no drool would leak out. What’s there to worry about?” Bai Ruozhu laughed.

”Stop now, or you’ll make the boy cry,” Yizi warned.

The little monk ahead paused, turned back, and with a mature tone said, ”Bai, I didn’t know you were so rude.”

His cute appearance, coupled with a serious tone and expression, looked like a little adult pretending to be deep, causing Bai Ruozhu and Yizi to laugh again. The little monk, face reddening further, turned away, feigning indifference, and walked off.

”That little monk was really fun. It’s a pity Dengdeng isn’t here, he’d certainly cling to him for play,” Bai Ruozhu said with a touch of sentiment after laughing.

”Master misses the young one. We don’t know when we’ll return,” Yizi remarked with a hint of nostalgia.
