Chapter 2372: Chapter 2371: What Are Merfolk Supposed to Be Like?

The melodious singing came from the depths of the sea, clear and ethereal, like a celestial sound.

Everyone was stunned and hurriedly looked towards the source of the sound, but saw nothing. The distant sea was empty, merging with the sky, as if this voice was a fairy’s song between the sea and sky.

”The flowing water connects with Wugang, parting without the grief of separation. The Green Mountain is united with clouds and rain, when has the bright moon ever belonged to two places?”

Even though the voice was drifting, people could hear the lyrics clearly. Although the singer could not be seen, the voice was as beautiful as heavenly music, prompting people to imagine what kind of man it might belong to.

Bai Ruozhu became excited and grabbed Jiang Yichun’s arm, ”It’s the Merfolk, it must be the Merfolk singing! Legend has it that the songs of the Merfolk are exceptionally magical and can captivate the soul. It must be the Merfolk singing in the sea, we should hurry and find them!”

In Jiang Yichun’s heart, an emotion was slowly spreading. Was that the song of his kin? The song was a farewell poem, but for whom was it sung?

Fang Luo also took a few steps forward. He had heard his father’s singing before, and although he only vaguely remembered it, he recognized a familiar taste.

”Heavens, it’s the song of the Merfolk, do not listen!” Elder Ding exclaimed, quickly covering his ears.

The people of Luili Island also turned pale one after another. Wa Shu said nervously to Bai Ruozhu, ”Lord Bai, the Merfolk are singing. It’s too dangerous to go out to sea now, you should wait before leaving.”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t say that they were looking for the Merfolk, so she said, ”It’s alright, our minds won’t be affected. We’ll part ways here.”

Wa Wei, coming to her senses, quickly hid her excitement and feigned confusion, asking, ”Is this the song of the Merfolk? It’s so beautiful, I’ve never heard such a lovely song, why should we be afraid?”

Wa Shu reached out to tap Wa Wei’s head and said, ”You silly girl, don’t speak carelessly. The Merfolk take people they encounter at sea and bury them in the sea. Whether seeing a Merfolk or hearing their songs, it’s a temptation for people at sea, no one can resist the charm of the Merfolk.”

Wa Wei pouted, does that guy really have such charm?

But thinking that he came especially to sing a farewell song for her, Wa Wei felt sweet yet a bit annoyed, he was too reckless, what if someone discovered him?

Bai Ruozhu and the others hurried onto the boat and immediately followed the singing, uncaring of Elder Ding’s worries. Fortunately, the song quickly faded, leaving the sea vast and empty with no trace of anyone.

Eventually, it was Jiang Yichun who calmed down and said, ”Let’s continue to Fusang Country, we’ll deal with the Merfolk matter slowly.”

If a Merfolk wanted to hide, it would be too difficult for them to find him.

Upon calming down, Bai Ruozhu found something off. She spoke to Jiang Yichun and Fang Luo, ”Was he bidding you farewell? If they knew you were kin, why wouldn’t they come to meet you?”

Jiang Yichun, with a cold expression, shook his head, ”It definitely wasn’t for us, maybe it’s for that little girl who left with us.”

”Wa Wei?” Bai Ruozhu was a bit surprised, ”I’ll ask her privately.”

After dinner, Bai Ruozhu asked Wa Wei if she had gotten used to things. Wa Wei, interested in matters on the boat, nodded and said, ”I’ve gotten used to it, I don’t get seasick.”

Bai Ruozhu studied her features, speculating about the relationship between Wa Wei and the Merfolk. Could there be descendants of the Merfolk on Luili Island?

”Wa Wei, was the Merfolk’s song today a farewell for you?” she asked.

Wa Wei’s face changed dramatically, then she laughed, ”How could that be, I don’t have such influence.”

Bai Ruozhu detected a clue and became even more convinced of her earlier guess. ”Since you’ll be with me for a while, it’s unnecessary to hide anything. I noticed you were a bit surprised when you met my husband, does he perhaps resemble someone you know?”

Wa Wei’s eyes showed fear, ”No, no, it’s just that I’ve never seen someone so good-looking.”

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”That’s a reasonable excuse, but I won’t hide it either. We want to find the Merfolk because my husband also has some Merfolk blood.”

”Impossible, how could he be a Merfolk?” Wa Wei regretted it as soon as she said it, realizing it implied she’d met a Merfolk before.

Bai Ruozhu smiled faintly and said, ”Doesn’t he resemble a Merfolk? Then what do Merfolk look like? With tails like fish? Living in the sea?”

”I, I don’t know. Didn’t my grandpa say that seeing a Merfolk would lead someone to the sea? If Lord Jiang were a Merfolk, why haven’t we been affected?” Wa Wei said, bracing herself.

”If you don’t want to say, I won’t force you, but this matter is very important to us. We only wish to find the island where the Merfolk live, we mean no harm to them.” Bai Ruozhu sighed. She sensed that Wa Wei didn’t want to tell the truth, but she wouldn’t use poison to force a confession from her.

Seeing Wa Wei with her head down, Bai Ruozhu sighed again and asked, ”Have you heard about the Vein Curse of the Merfolk?”

”What is that?” Wa Wei raised her head, apparently she hadn’t heard of it.

”It’s said that the Merfolk, regardless of gender, are always young and beautiful, but outsiders don’t know that they carry a curse in their bloodline and can only live up to thirty years. Because my husband was framed by an enemy, another curse interacts with the Vein Curse, leaving him with only three years.” Bai Ruozhu said slowly.

Wa Wei’s face turned pale, ”How is this possible? He never told me!”

She regretted it after saying it, but tears started to fall. If she knew he could only live until thirty, she wouldn’t waste a single day and would spend all her time with him.

Bai Ruozhu could tell this girl had developed feelings, she felt a sense of empathy. She took Wa Wei’s hand and said, ”Maybe it’s different for different Merfolk; we’re simply trying to find them to seek answers. I won’t give up until the last moment.”

Wa Wei looked up at Bai Ruozhu, ”Thank you, Miss Bai.”

”You can call me sister or teacher. I won’t force you about today, but if you know anything, please also help me.” Bai Ruozhu’s tone was full of earnest pleading.

Wa Wei could not help but cry, ”I don’t want to hide it from you, I’m just afraid, afraid of harming him. I promised him I wouldn’t tell anyone about him.”

Bai Ruozhu felt a bit conflicted, she didn’t want to pressure Wa Wei, but she really needed clues.

”If you meet him again, directly tell him about my husband’s situation and see if he can help us.” Bai Ruozhu said.

”Alright, I promise you that,” Wa Wei said.

Bai Ruozhu handed a handkerchief for her to wipe her tears and thanked her. This made Wa Wei feel even more embarrassed, leaving in a state of apprehension, as if she had done something unworthy of Bai Ruozhu.
