Chapter 2336: Chapter 2335: Truth Comes Out After Drinking

Bai Ruozhu’s mouth twitched slightly. This misunderstanding was indeed quite embarrassing, but Xu Huilin didn’t do it on purpose. Besides, it wasn’t like he actually touched it. Yuan Licheng was just too jealous, wasn’t he?

”Ruozhu.” Fo Lanying’s voice came from behind her. She lowered her head awkwardly and said, ”Yesterday, Yuan Licheng hit Xu Huilin, and it’s all my fault.”

Bai Ruozhu patted her shoulder, ”I already know. It’s not your fault, and I should thank you for making a mechanical arm for my sworn brother.”

Fo Lanying felt even more embarrassed, ”I find myself particularly prone to causing trouble. A few days ago, my screaming was too loud from an illness and caused some trouble for your second sister-in-law.”

”Ah?” Bai Ruozhu looked towards Si Yihuan.

”It’s nothing serious, just that the neighbors got disturbed and thought we were mistreating the servants, so they reported it to the Government Office.” Si Yihuan covered her mouth and laughed, ”Fortunately, when the authorities came to check, they saw the actual situation. I told them Lanying is your patient and the illness is hard to treat, so she’s staying at our house temporarily. The matter was resolved, and the neighbors felt embarrassed and apologized to us.”

Bai Ruozhu breathed a sigh of relief, ”As long as it’s fine, thank you, second sister-in-law.”

”No need to be polite. It’s a small matter. Let’s go inside and talk. Your second brother will be back soon.” Si Yihuan smiled as she led them into the house.

Bai Ruozhu reached out to help her and casually took her pulse. Her face soon lit up with joy, ”Second sister-in-law, you’re pregnant!”

”Ah? Can it be confirmed?” Si Yihuan had a look of belated realization. Actually, a few days ago, Bai Zepei had told her to find a doctor to check her pulse. He seemed worried and said to wait until Ruozhu returned to discuss it.

”Confirmed. You must not overwork yourself. Pay attention especially in the first three months.” Bai Ruozhu hurriedly helped her sit down.

Fo Lanying, recalling how Si Yihuan had stayed by her side on the day of her illness, felt even guiltier. She wondered why her own family couldn’t be as kind as the Bai Family.

Not long after, Bai Zepei rushed back, and by then, the food was almost ready. Si Yihuan instructed the servants to set the wine feast. Bai Ruozhu sent someone to call Yuan Licheng and Xu Huilin, saying she was aware of their fight and wouldn’t blame them.

It took a while for them to arrive, each finding the other particularly displeasing.

Jiang Yichun noticed Xu Huilin’s face was bruised in several places, feeling somewhat sad. If it had been the Senior Fox of the past, how could he have been beaten like this by Yuan Licheng?

Bai Ruozhu also felt a pang of heartache, but since she had already said she wouldn’t blame them, she felt awkward reprimanding Yuan Licheng. However, she had definitely noted it down—how could he hit so hard? It was simply too detestable!

The group noisily took their seats, and Bai Ruozhu shared the happy news of the second sister-in-law’s pregnancy. Bai Zepei was overjoyed and laughed, ”Make sure you don’t drink wine later, and don’t tire yourself out. Have the servants handle anything that needs doing.”

”Yes, I got it.” Si Yihuan nodded with a flushed face.

Bai Ruozhu laughed, ”Second brother, you’re flaunting your love too much! Be careful not to upset the single folks!”

The Bai family was used to Bai Ruozhu’s peculiar way of speaking, but Qiu Zhi, Fang Luo, and the others didn’t understand.

Yizi chuckled and explained, ”Our lady says those who haven’t married are called single dogs. When she and her husband show affection, it’s known as flaunting love.”

Everyone burst into laughter, realizing the meaning.

Fang Luo laughed too but kept his mouth shut, his eyes appearing somewhat pensive.

If you count it, he’d be the most senior single dog here, wouldn’t he?

As everyone ate and chatted, Fo Lanying asked about the recent trip to the North Mountain area. Noting Fang Luo’s mood, Bai Ruozhu skipped over it and only mentioned the encounter with the Jinmen Escort Agency robbers and the subsequent run-in with Gufeng.

She feared scaring Si Yihuan, so she downplayed the story and omitted the frightening scenes, though those familiar with Gufeng’s reputation still sensed the danger.

The conversation gradually opened up, and Fo Lanying nudged Yuan Licheng with her elbow. Embarrassed, Yuan Licheng poured a cup of wine, raised it towards Xu Huilin, and said, ”Brother Xu, I was too impulsive yesterday. I apologize to you. This cup is for you!”

Xu Huilin, his face still swollen, awkwardly said, ”It’s not entirely your fault. I failed to control the situation. I should apologize as well.”

He didn’t specify to whom he was apologizing, for if he did, wouldn’t everyone know he touched Fo Lanying’s chest by accident...?

”Alright, alright, now that we’ve had this drink, let’s not bring up the past anymore.” Bai Ruozhu quickly smoothed things over.

”Exactly, let’s finish this drink.” Xu Huilin raised his cup, and while his mechanical arm was still a bit unsteady, the wine spilled quite a lot. Next to him, Qiu Zhi was quick-witted and promptly refilled his cup.

After eating and drinking their fill, the group chatted more freely. They soon discovered Fang Luo’s poor alcohol tolerance; just a few drinks in, and he was already tipsy.

”Doesn’t that kid rarely drink?” Bai Ruozhu whispered to Jiang Yichun.

”Maybe it’s his first time drinking.” Jiang Yichun had a look of ”sympathy.”

Fang Luo slurred his words to the group, ”What do you know? Since I know I’m a Merfolk and won’t live past thirty, why marry and wreck a girl’s life? I reckon Merfolk shouldn’t marry, just let fate take its course.”

Everyone glanced at Jiang Yichun, worried he might feel upset, but he just smiled without speaking. He understood Fang Luo’s feelings. If he had known about his situation earlier, he wouldn’t have approached Ruozhu at all. He’d rather suffer alone than make her sad for him.

Unexpectedly, Gao Zhou suddenly spoke up, ”Then you don’t understand the love in this world. Once you come across it, you simply can’t escape!”

His eyes turned slightly red, and his voice trembled, ”Merfolk are people too. Even if they understand things clearly, there are times they can’t help but fall in love. They are cursed by bloodlines and can never truly have their own love. What is the meaning of such a life?”

Bai Ruozhu hastily gave Jiang Yichun a look, and he stood up, ”Dad, you’ve had too much. Let me help you back to rest.”

Gao Zhou didn’t resist. As they left, Bai Ruozhu saw tears streaming down Gao Zhou’s face.

”I... I didn’t mean it.” Fang Luo sobered up a bit, the indifference on his face diminished, and he seemed more like an inexperienced youth. Though no longer young, he had little contact with others, maintaining an innocence similar to that of a child.

”It’s okay, it’s okay. That’s what they call ’truths spoken when drunk.’ Let’s continue. There’s still so much food—don’t waste it.” Bai Ruozhu hurried to ease the situation.

Others quickly joined in, joking and changing the topic. However, Bai Zepei’s face showed less laughter, and his looks towards Bai Ruozhu were filled with concern.

Bai Ruozhu knew her second brother was worried about her. She didn’t dare to meet his eyes because she couldn’t face the fact that if Achun couldn’t really survive, she would never give up, no matter what until the very last moment.
