Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 2308: Chapter 2307: North Mountain Merfolk

Glancing at Lao Wan’s pale little face, it might also be because he was unconscious from internal injury that day and woke up finding himself in bed, having drunk a bowl of her medicine.

In the deep of night, Du Zhongshu returned to his room to handle the secret messages, while Lao Wan finally woke up. Each movement brought her intense pain, making it almost impossible to breathe, and it felt as though the legs weren’t even hers.

A cold light flashed in her eyes. Du Zhongshu, I’ll remember you!

Suddenly, a gust of wind blew the door open, and a shadowy figure rushed in, standing by her bedside in the blink of an eye.

She was so scared she wanted to scream, yet found herself unable to make a sound. The figure hadn’t even moved. What was he... or was he a ghost?

”You’d best be quiet. I came to help you; you should be grateful,” said the shadow in a raspy, middle-aged man’s voice.

Lao Wan nodded with difficulty, indicating she wouldn’t scream. She had already thought things through; this person was so formidable, if he wanted to kill her, he wouldn’t need to waste words, a single move could take her life.

”I...” She found she could speak and felt a sense of relief in her heart. ”How will senior help me?”

The shadow laughed lowly. ”You’ve got some courage. I’ll give you a treasure; if you nurture it, your injuries will heal soon, and you’ll suffer less pain. Most importantly, you’ll have the means to seek revenge in the future.”

”Alright, thank you. What do I need to do to repay you?” Lao Wan, since childhood, believed there’s no free lunch in this world.

The shadow laughed again. ”I want your body. Once you’re healed, become my woman.”

Lao Wan’s body shivered. She wanted to refuse, but the person’s powerful strength and mysterious aura made her afraid to speak. She believed that if she so much as uttered ”no,” she would soon die here.

The shadow extended a hand, revealing a dirty palm with blackened fingernails. Lying in it was a plump green insect that nearly made Lao Wan throw up.

But before she could think more, the green insect suddenly jumped and burrowed into her nostril, instantly entering her body.

She had no time to panic before she felt her body lighten significantly, even the pain in her legs eased dramatically.

”Is this... a Poisonous Insect?” Lao Wan asked.

”You know something. Take good care of it. I’ll leave for now.” With a flicker, the shadow vanished, and the door was shut once more, as if no one had ever been there.

Lao Wan lay dumbfounded in bed. Was it all just a dream?

Who was that shadow? Cloaked entirely in black, even with a hood on his head, he said he’d want her body later. Just thinking about it made her nauseous, but did she even have the chance to refuse?

She decided not to dwell on it. She closed her eyes, hoping the door wouldn’t be opened again. But her heart skipped a beat when it did, and she saw Du Zhongshu.

”You’re awake?” Du Zhongshu looked pleasantly surprised, ”Seems the Ganoderma worked indeed.”

Lao Wan couldn’t express her current feelings. She lowered her head and said obediently, ”Thank you, Your Highness, for your care. It’s my fault for failing your mission.”

Du Zhongshu walked to the bedside, took her hand, and said, ”It’s not your fault; I underestimated Bai Ruozhu. Focus on getting well first, and once you’re recovered, I...”

He paused, turned his head awkwardly, and said, ”I’ll treat you well.”

With that, he left hurriedly as if escaping, leaving Lao Wan in shock and disbelief. Did she just hear him wrong?

No, he must be acting, trying to win people over. She had seen him act before, so why take it seriously?

...

In the Bai Residence, Bai Ruozhu had a good night’s sleep and finally felt refreshed. After a simple wash and meal, she visited Fo Lanying and the others at their temporary small courtyard.

”Ruozhu, look, I’m making a Mechanical Arm for your senior brother. I haven’t been slacking off!” Fo Lanying said proudly.

”Alright, I’ll get you a new handbag tomorrow!” Bai Ruozhu replied cheerfully.

”I also want a Jade hairpin,” Fo Lanying said with a thick face.

”Fine, it’s yours!” Bai Ruozhu agreed.

Fo Lanying chuckled, ”Being rich is indeed more enjoyable. I ought to get Yuan Licheng to make more money. So many beautiful bags, clothes, and jewelry I want to buy.”

”You might as well ask Yuan Licheng to rob a bank for quick money,” Bai Ruozhu remarked bluntly.

Fo Lanying chuckled, ”I don’t count on him anymore; it’d be nice if your senior brother gives me some thanks later.”

”You’re about to turn into a Money Freak!” Bai Ruozhu laughed.

The Mechanical Arm was halfway done, and Bai Ruozhu could already see its prototype. It was much more intricate than she had imagined. The Jiuli Clan indeed lived up to their reputation as experts in Mechanical Techniques. Once the Mechanical Arm was completed and Xu Huilin adapted to it, things would become much more convenient for him.

By afternoon, Jiang Yichun hurriedly returned with a secret message for Bai Ruozhu to see.

”What? The last Merfolk is still in the North Mountain, living hidden in the Market, and married to a commoner?” Bai Ruozhu was shocked upon reading the message, ”Wasn’t it said that Merfolk don’t live past thirty?”

Right after asking, she regretted it. Bringing up this topic so directly wasn’t making Achun uncomfortable and distressed?

”I plan to visit the North Mountain to see if I can find that Merfolk and inquire about the Island where they live.” Jiang Yichun said.

Bai Ruozhu immediately started packing, ”I’ll go with you. I can use the excuse of inspecting the Medicine field in the North Mountain, which I indeed need to check.”

”Alright, let’s rest for the night and set off at dawn.” Jiang Yichun’s voice contained a hint of excitement. If it’s possible to find a Merfolk living beyond thirty, perhaps there’s a way to extend his lifespan, so he won’t have to part from his wife and children!

Bai Ruozhu was also so elated she couldn’t sleep, knowing her worries about Achun’s Vein Curse inside out. If that Merfolk could be found, perhaps Achun would be alright!

Both of them were tossing and turning, unable to sleep, like flipping pancakes, eventually deciding to flip together. After all, what was the use of wasting such a beautiful spring night?

Early the next morning, Bai Ruozhu shared her plan with the group. She brought along Jianqi, Yizi, and the young Daoist Qiu Zhi on the trip. Fo Lanying and Yuan Licheng stayed behind to help Xu Huilin expedite the Mechanical Arm.

The five of them rode fast horses out of the City and didn’t rest until noon, having a bit of dried food.

”Why didn’t your father come?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

”He’s probably afraid of being heartbroken, seeing another Merfolk who isn’t my mother.” Jiang Yichun replied.

Bai Ruozhu nodded. Her fellow townsman truly had a turbulent fate. Though he had lived a smooth life post-transmigration, he fell in love with a Merfolk woman, leading to a broken family, leaving him utterly desolate.

Fearing they’d miss the Merfolk, the five lived ruggedly outdoors, speeding their journey, and reached the North Mountain area in just a few days.
