Chapter 1492: Chapter 1593 Dengdeng Feels So Uncomfortable_1

”Get up!” Bai Ruozhu demanded angrily.

”I won’t get up. If I make a mistake, I have to accept the punishment, not just for upsetting you this time, but also for... for the time I stabbed you with a sword.” As soon as he mentioned the previous incident, Jiang Yichun felt his throat go dry.

Little Dengdeng stared curiously at his dad and leaned in toward the washboard, ”What’s this? I want to play too.”

Seeing his son’s dumbfounded face, Jiang Yichun could no longer keep a straight face, ”Go play over there, this is not for children to play with.”

”I want to play with you, Dad. Why won’t you let me play with you?” Dengdeng asked with a hurt look on his face.

Bai Ruozhu felt cold sweat running down her back. Was her silly son really clueless, or was he subtly helping his dad?

”Get up now. If you have to kneel, go back inside the house, don’t embarrass us out here.” Bai Ruozhu kicked Jiang Yichun with a puff of anger, and he didn’t dodge it. Instead, Little Dengdeng, feeling sorry for him, reached out to rub where he was kicked and asked anxiously, ”Dad, does it hurt?”

After asking, he turned to Bai Ruozhu with a stern face and said, ”Mom, don’t hit Dad, it hurts him!”

”Dad’s not hurt. Dad did something wrong and made your mom angry. Don’t blame your mom,” Jiang Yichun said as he stood up from the washboard and picked up his son.

He knew if Ruozhu ignored him, she was truly furious. If she could still manage to kick him or scold him, she would probably calm down soon.

Bai Ruozhu’s anger surged up several levels again. What did he mean she hit him? He was just playing the good guy, making their son think Mom was a nasty, grumpy person.

”Dengdeng, if you think your dad is so great, then don’t come to your mom in the future.” Bai Ruozhu glared at her son and turned to walk out.

”Mom, Mom, please don’t be mad!” Dengdeng’s face puckered up, as if he was about to cry desperately.

Jiang Yichun hurriedly carried Dengdeng and caught up to Bai Ruozhu, blocking her way and saying, ”It’s already getting dark. Where are you going? This is your home. If anyone should leave, it shouldn’t be you. I’ve sent everyone away. If you’re still angry with me, isn’t it enough if I leave?”

”Then go! Hurry up and go to keep your lifesaver company. Stay with her, and from now on, don’t come to bother me and my son!” Bai Ruozhu pointed at the Main Gate, seething with anger.

A pained expression flickered across Jiang Yichun’s eyes, and his face grew dimmer, ”I know it’s my fault. I won’t bring any women home again, no matter the reason.”

Dengdeng suddenly burst into tears, extending his little arms to hug his mother’s neck, ”Wuwuwu, Mom, don’t be mad. Dengdeng loves you the most.”

”There, there, don’t cry. Mom’s not mad at you.” Bai Ruozhu, feeling sorry for her son, once again gave Jiang Yichun a fierce glare. It was, after all, this man’s fault for bringing trouble upon them!

”Dengdeng loves Dad, too. Love both together, don’t fight, otherwise it makes me feel so bad inside.” Little Dengdeng sobbed as he spoke.

Bai Ruozhu’s heart tightened. Children are very sensitive; he must be afraid of his parents separating and losing a complete family.

She sighed and took Dengdeng from Jiang Yichun’s arms, saying, ”Mom’s not mad anymore. Let’s go back to the house for dinner.”

Dengdeng immediately switched from tears to smiles and sneakily winked at his dad. Jiang Yichun found it amusing but dared not show it, secretly giving his son a look in return.

The meal went peacefully enough. Bai Ruozhu didn’t give Jiang Yichun too much of a cold shoulder. Only Lin Ping’er kept stealing glances at her, clearly curious whether she and Jiang Yichun had resolved their spat.

But before they even finished eating, Thunderbolt arrived at the Main Hall’s door, announcing, ”Master, the Emperor has urgently summoned you to the Palace.”

Jiang Yichun’s hand, reaching for some food, froze mid-air, then retracted and put down his chopsticks. He cautiously glanced at Bai Ruozhu and asked, ”Ruozhu, should I go?”

Bai Ruozhu felt her heart constrict again. What on earth was the Emperor trying to pull? No sooner had her husband returned home than he was summoned to the Palace. Was he expected to keep watch over the recovery of that female Shadow Guard?

Bai Yihong furrowed his brows, ”Ruozhu, what’s going on? You and your husband may have a quarrel, but don’t defy the Imperial Decree. Tell Yichun to hurry there. The sooner he goes, the sooner he’ll be back.”

”Yes, you should go,” Bai Ruozhu reluctantly nodded in agreement.

Jiang Yichun offered her an apologetic smile, then hurriedly took his leave after greeting his parents.

”It seems the situation in the Southwest is tense,” Bai Zepei murmured, Bai Ruozhu turned to him sharply, understanding her second brother’s intent to offer an explanation for Jiang Yichun, fearing that she would be upset.

She smiled at her second brother, ”It’s all right, let’s continue our meal.”

But Jiang Yichun did not return the entire night, and the next day Bai Ruozhu wanted to ask the Emperor just where her husband had been taken.

”Lord Bai, we meet again.” The official from the Department of Precautionary Punishment, Master Liu, arrived at the Female Physicians Institution and greeted Bai Ruozhu with a salute, which Bai Ruozhu hurriedly returned. She could tell that Master Liu was being exceptionally polite, seemingly eager to be on good terms with her.

”Master Liu, what brings you here in person? Has there been any result regarding the matter of the Luorong root?” Bai Ruozhu invited him to sit down for tea.

Master Liu said with a smile, ”Lord Bai is truly astute. The matter has been thoroughly investigated. It was Wei Pengbo from the Imperial Medical Hospital who bribed a palace maid close to Consort Lyu. The Department of Precautionary Punishment has already taken him into custody at the Sky Prison, pending a report to His Majesty to decide on the punishment.”

After all, as a deputy head of the Imperial Medical Hospital, the Department couldn’t privately determine his guilt.

The outcome was almost as Bai Ruozhu had anticipated, so she did not show much surprise, though she hadn’t expected the Department to act so swiftly.

Bai Ruozhu stood up and bowed to Master Liu, ”I thank you, Master Liu, for vindicating me and bringing the wrongdoer to justice.”

”Speaking of which, this time we owed much to Master Lu’s assistance; otherwise, we wouldn’t have caught Wei Pengbo’s fox tail so quickly,” Master Liu said humbly.

”Whether it’s you or Master Lu, I am deeply grateful,” Bai Ruozhu replied politely.

”Of course, of course, Lord Bai, please don’t be too formal with me. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be seeking medical attention from you. If you’re so courteous, how could I ever muster the courage to ask for your help?” said Master Liu with a chuckle.

She thought to herself how suddenly courteous Master Liu had become, prescient in befriending a renowned physician, preparing for the day he might need medical treatment—indeed, he was someone who thought ahead.

Realizing his intent, she quickly said, ”To cure and save people is my duty. Should you need anything in the future, Master Liu, just ask. Naturally, I hope for your good health, so that you’ll never have to seek my services.”

Master Liu burst into laughter, ”Good, good, I’ll take that as a blessing from Lord Bai. May it grant me many more years of good health.”

After seeing Master Liu off, Bai Ruozhu wanted to visit Hanlu Palace to check on Consort Lyu’s condition, but unexpectedly ran into Mao Xingcai as soon as she left the door.

Mao Xingcai’s face fell, and he seemed to have aged several years all at once. His eyes darted away at the sight of Bai Ruozhu as if he wished he could bury himself in a hole.

Bai Ruozhu didn’t know if he had been aware of Wei Pengbo’s actions before. Observing him, a probing look entered her eyes.
