Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Shooting Oneself in the Foot

Zhu Xiaowen panicked. Ye Xiu wasn’t her cousin, nor was his surname Lin. The moment he produced his Identity Token, the gig would be up! According to the rules of Ming Feng Tower, anyone caught secretly bringing a non-member inside would first be beaten, then have their membership revoked and be banned for life. She wasn’t afraid of a beating; with Ye Xiu’s status as a Great Grandmaster, he could protect her and her brother and get them out safely without any trouble. However, if she were barred from entering Ming Feng Tower in the future, the Zhu Family would lose its source for intelligence.

”Show it then. If he’s your cousin, let him produce his Identity Token for us to see,” Yang Guofu pressed aggressively.

”Don’t push it, Yang Guofu,” Zhu Xiaowen snapped.

”So what if I’m pushing you?” Yang Guofu retorted, refusing to yield his advantage.

”Young Master Yang, how about we settle this privately?” Zhu Guozhang suggested in a low voice.

”Settle it privately?” Yang Guofu bellowed. ”Young Master Zhu, are you admitting that Zhu Xiaowen brought a stranger into Ming Feng Tower?”

”You...” Zhu Guozhang, Zhu Xiaowen, Yun Lan, and the others were enraged. Yang Guofu’s shouting would surely attract the Ming Feng Tower staff, yet they had no way to resolve their current predicament.

”Nothing to say? Then get the hell out! Or do I need to call the staff to come beat you out with clubs?” Yang Guofu sneered, his face alight with triumph.

The Yang and Zhu Families had been rivals for years, but the Yangs had never had such a satisfying victory. Today, he had brought glory to his family.

Seeing this, most of the young masters and ladies from prominent families wore expressions of schadenfreude. The Zhu Family would no longer be able to enter Ming Feng Tower and buy intelligence, while other families could buy intelligence *about* them. It wouldn’t take long for the Zhu Family to be devoured and bankrupted by the major houses.

At that moment, Luo Qiwei’s expression was exceptionally grim. He had thought Yang Guofu volunteered to help him humiliate and expel Ye Xiu. But instead of confronting Ye Xiu, Yang Guofu had targeted Zhu Xiaowen and Zhu Guozhang. This is making enemies for me! I’m the host of this banquet; Zhu Xiaowen and Zhu Guozhang are my guests. If Ming Feng Tower blacklists the Zhu Family, won’t they despise me?

”Wait!” Thinking of this, Luo Qiwei hurried over. ”Young Master Yang, give me some face. Don’t make things difficult for Xiaowen and Young Master Zhu. Just get rid of the pretty boy.”

”Who do you think you are, expecting me to give you face?” Yang Guofu said with contempt, his attitude toward Luo Qiwei completely changed.

The situation changed in an instant.

No one had expected Yang Guofu to openly turn on Luo Qiwei just to get Ming Feng Tower to blacklist the Zhu Family.

Ye Xiu watched Yang Guofu with interest. He’d overheard the earlier conversation between Luo Qiwei and Yang Guofu. I originally thought this man was just Luo Qiwei’s pawn, but it turns out Luo Qiwei was the one being used. Interesting!

”You...” Luo Qiwei was livid. ”Since you don’t consider me a friend, please leave my banquet.”

”I damn well won’t leave. What are you going to do about it?” Yang Guofu slapped Luo Qiwei across the face and began to curse. ”Did you really think I accepted your invitation because we’re good friends? Don’t flatter yourself. You’re the bastard son of a whore; you aren’t worthy of my friendship. I came to this banquet for my friends and for the owner of Ming Feng Tower, not for you.”

”You... you dare hit me?” Luo Qiwei clutched his cheek, staring at Yang Guofu in disbelief. His face, contorted with extreme rage, cycled from white to red to green, like a traffic light. He had wanted to use Yang Guofu to humiliate and drive out Ye Xiu, but he’d ended up dropping a rock on his own foot. Ye Xiu wasn’t humiliated in the slightest; he was.

”So what if I hit you?” Yang Guofu slapped him again. ”Don’t think you’re the true young master of the Zuo Family just because people call you Young Master Luo. Everyone in Jin Ye City knows you were born from your mother’s affair. Go on, ask anyone here who truly considers you the Zuo Family’s heir!”

Hearing this, Luo Qiwei immediately scanned the crowd, suddenly unsure if anyone had come for his sake. One look was all it took; he nearly spat blood from anger. The young masters and ladies who had been enjoying the spectacle had suddenly broken into small groups, chatting amongst themselves.

PFFT!

Luo Qiwei felt a sharp stab in his heart. It’s true. Just as Yang Guofu said, these so-called friends never truly considered me a friend. They didn’t come to my banquet for my sake at all!

In fact, Yang Guofu was right. The young masters and ladies hadn’t come for Luo Qiwei. Although they were members of Ming Feng Tower, their families usually forbade them from visiting privately. Exceptions were made only when intelligence was needed or for special occasions like Luo Qiwei’s banquet tonight. Their eagerness to attend wasn’t due to the tower’s prestige, but the hope of catching a glimpse of its owner.

That’s right. Every last one of them, whether a young master or a young lady, had come for the owner of Ming Feng Tower—the woman widely acknowledged as the number one beauty in Jin Ye City.

”What are you smiling at, pretty boy?” Luo Qiwei, fuming with nowhere to direct his anger, exploded when he saw Ye Xiu smiling.

”I’m not smiling,” Ye Xiu said, still smiling.

Everyone was speechless. You’re grinning so wide the corners of your mouth are practically at the back of your head, and you still have the nerve to lie with a straight face?

”You... you...” Luo Qiwei was about to burst with rage. He roared, ”Someone! Security! Security! A non-member has snuck in! Beat him and throw him out!”

Yang Guofu chimed in, ”And throw out Zhu Guozhang and Zhu Xiaowen while you’re at it!”

Seeing the drama shift back to Ye Xiu, Zhu Xiaowen, and Zhu Guozhang, the crowd of onlookers gathered closer again to watch the show.

”Big Brother Ye, let’s go,” Zhu Guozhang said. The Zhu Family had been utterly disgraced tonight, and he was too ashamed to remain any longer.

”We should go, Big Brother Ye,” Zhu Xiaowen added, her heart filled with guilt. If she hadn’t insisted on bringing Ye Xiu to Ming Feng Tower, he wouldn’t have suffered this humiliation.

But Ye Xiu didn’t move. He simply stood his ground, a smile on his face.

”Who is making such a racket in my Ming Feng Tower?”

Just then, a voice as divine as heavenly music rang out. It was so beautiful, so pleasing to the ear. The voice was incredibly clear, without a single impurity, its tone gentle and its timbre graceful. That single sound made all the world’s most beautiful melodies seem like the barking of dogs and crowing of roosters by comparison.

Every man present wore an expression of rapturous enchantment, as if lost in a dream.

Ye Xiu turned toward the sound. A woman was strolling toward them, her beauty indescribable and seemingly not of this world. She was the very epitome of flawless perfection. She was the public enemy of every other woman in the city, the master of Ming Feng Tower, the undisputed number one beauty of Jin Ye City—Gong Jin
