Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Lucknow

Teachers’ Training Institute & Archaeological Commission

The historic city of Lucknow greeted the ministerial party with a warm breeze and the scent of blooming jasmine. Ram Prasad Gupta, Sardar Patel, and Jawaharlal Nehru were accompanied by the Minister of Culture and Education, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, as they inspected the newly commissioned Uttar Pradesh State Teachers’ Training Academy.

Walking through the arched verandas of the majestic red-brick facility, Dr Radhakrishnan held a thick wooden clipboard, gesturing toward a series of open-air classrooms where hundreds of schoolteachers sat in attentive rows, reciting classical passages under the guidance of linguists and scholars.

”This is the heart of our linguistic and pedagogical revitalisation program, Prime Minister,” Dr Radhakrishnan explained, his voice rich with scholarly authority. ”Teacher training in Sanskrit pedagogy and classical instruction is now fully operational across forty-eight regional centres in the northern and central states.

”The feedback from the initial cohorts has been extraordinarily positive. The teachers are discovering that classical Sanskrit, when taught through modern, intuitive immersion techniques rather than archaic rote grammar rules, acts as a supreme cognitive framework for young children.”

”And how does this look for the incoming elementary school cohorts?” Nehru asked, leaning against a carved pillar as he watched a young female instructor write Devanagari verbs on a blackboard.

”The curriculum is fully aligned for the new academic session beginning this July,” Radhakrishnan replied. ”Millions of young children entering primary tents and classrooms will receive foundational instruction in classical Sanskrit alongside their regional mother tongues and modern science.”

Radhakrishnan’s expression darkened slightly. ”However, we have encountered pushback in certain urban districts.”

Patel’s eyes narrowed instantly. ”From where?”

”Primarily from communist-leaning teachers’ unions in Bengal and Kerala, as well as a section of secondary science teachers in urban centres,” Radhakrishnan revealed. ”They argue that mandatory Sanskrit instruction is an ideological imposition of ’archaic feudalism’ and claim it distracts from pure technical education.”

Patel scoffed, stepping forward, his voice cold and uncompromising. ”Ideological posturing. We are building a unified nation, not a collection of rootless clerks. If a teacher refuses to abide by the national curriculum mandated by the sovereign parliament, what is the policy, Ram?”

Ram Prasad Gupta stood quietly, watching the teachers in the courtyard. When he spoke, his voice was flat, absolute, and devoid of hesitation.

”This Republic pays its teachers to build the mind and soul of its children, Dr Radhakrishnan, not to preach political subversion,” Ram said. ”Issue a clear, final administrative directive. Any teacher or instructor who flatly refuses to teach the mandated Sanskrit curriculum will have their employment terminated immediately. No exceptions, no lengthy tribunal appeals. Issue severance, relieve them of their duties, and hire new, patriotic graduates who are eager to serve the nation. There are millions of educated young men and women waiting for honourable employment.”

Radhakrishnan bowed his head smoothly. ”It shall be executed strictly, Prime Minister. We will purge any deliberate obstructionism.”

Nehru sighed softly, though he did not dissent. ”And what of the grand architectural standardisation project we discussed in October, Sarvepalli? The national blueprints for public buildings, schools, and civic offices incorporating our ancient heritage?”

Radhakrishnan shifted the papers on his clipboard. ”Because of our immediate operational priorities, we focused our complete engineering and architectural resources on completing the Bangalore Scientific Complex first, as you commanded. Now that Bangalore is fully built, the architectural teams have turned their full attention to the national civic blueprints. The complete catalogue of standardised architectural plans, blending classical Indian motifs, stone carvings, and modern structural engineering, will be ready for nationwide distribution by September 1948. There have been no hiccups or delays.”

”Good,” Ram said, turning back toward the waiting vehicles. ”When our children step into a school, or when a citizen enters a government office in Indore, Colombo, or Rangoon, the very stone around them must remind them that they are citizens of an ancient, indestructible civilisation.”

New Delhi

Ministry of Food & Agriculture Conference Room

The air in the South Block conference room was thick with the scent of rolled agricultural blueprints, soil maps, and fresh tea. Ram Prasad Gupta sat at the head of the table, flanked by Patel and Nehru. Opposite them sat Dr Verghese Kurien, the young, energetic mastermind of the national dairy and cooperative initiative, and Dr M.S. Swaminathan, the brilliant young geneticist leading the agricultural research mission.

Spread across the table were trays of glass Petri dishes containing cross-bred wheat and rice grains, along with detailed maps of agricultural yield projections.

”Give us the unvarnished truth, Dr Swaminathan,” Ram commanded, picking up a small glass vial containing hybrid wheat seeds. ”Where does the Green Revolution mission stand today?”

Dr Swaminathan cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. ”We are still in the foundational, exploratory stages, Prime Minister. Over the past eight months, our field teams have traversed every agro-climatic zone in the subcontinent, collecting over twelve thousand native landrace seed varieties of wheat, rice, millet, and pulses possessing desirable genetic traits such as drought tolerance, pest resistance, and deep root structures.”

”And the cross-breeding programs?” Nehru asked, leaning over the table to inspect the seed trays.

”Our research stations in IARI Pusa, Cuttack, and Lyallpur have successfully germinated the first-generation hybrid seedlings,” Swaminathan explained enthusiastically. ”By crossing high-yield wheat strains with our sturdy local varieties, we are seeing an increase in stem resilience that can support heavy grain heads without lodging under high winds. But these are preliminary trials. It will take more time and more sessions of controlled field testing before we can begin mass seed multiplication.”

”And what of the human element, Dr Kurien?” Patel asked, turning his sharp gaze toward the young engineer. ”Are the farmers accepting modern techniques, chemical fertilisers, and cooperative structures?”

Kurien let out a heavy, weary breath, shaking his head. ”Progress on farmer education is slow, Sardar-sahib. Extremely slow. We are encountering immense cultural and social inertia in the rural hinterlands. When our agricultural extension officers visit villages in the Gangetic plains or the Deccan to demonstrate row-planting, tractor mechanisation, and cooperative credit, the village elders simply shake their heads. They tell our officers: ’Our grandfathers ploughed this land with oxen, and their grandfathers before them. Who are you city boys in trousers to tell us how to turn the soil?’”

”Ignorance and habit,” Patel grumbled. ”They prefer familiar poverty to unfamiliar abundance.”

”How do we break this deadlock, Kurien?” Ram asked, his eyes fixing on the young expert with piercing intensity.

Kurien leaned forward, tapping a finger on a regional land map. ”We cannot win this argument through speeches or pamphlets, Prime Minister. Peasants do not care for scientific papers; they care for harvest weight. I propose a radical shift in tactics. The government holds thousands of acres of uncultivated or vacant state-owned land adjacent to major farming clusters. We should transform these empty government plots into model state demonstration farms.”

”Go on,” Ram encouraged.

”We bring in modern heavy machinery-tractors, mechanical seed drills, deep cultivators-and apply Dr Swaminathan’s hybrid seeds and optimised fertilisers on these demonstration plots,” Kurien explained, his eyes gleaming with passion. ”And crucial to this plan: we do not hire traditional wealthy land-owning farmers to work these plots. We recruit landless agricultural labourers, the poorest, most downtrodden men in the village, and pay them fair daily wages to operate the modern machinery under our scientists’ supervision.”

Ram’s face broke into a rare smile. ”Brilliant.”

”Do you see the psychological impact, Sardar-sahib?” Kurien continued excitedly. ”When the harvest season arrives, the traditional, conservative village landlords will look across the road and see that the landless labourer, a man they looked down upon, has produced four times the crop yield per acre using modern methods on previously barren land. When they see the tangible, overwhelming financial proof standing right before their eyes, their generations-old resistance will shatter overnight. They will beg us for the seeds, the machines, and the cooperative bank loans.” ℴ

”Acquire whatever land is necessary, Kurien,” Ram declared instantly. ”Use every square yard of vacant government land across Punjab, UP, Bihar, and the Irrawaddy. Show them that modern science combined with organised labour will outperform ancient habit every single time.”
