Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

5 January, 1948

The wind howling through the high passes of the Pir Panjal carried with it the bite of sharp, icy air and the scent of cordite. At twelve thousand feet, where the snow lay piled in waist-deep drifts across the razor-thin ledges, the mountains usually belonged to silence. But on this freezing dawn in early January 1948, the silence of the pass was shattered by the rhythmic chatter of German MG 42 machine guns and the dull, rhythmic concussions of heavy Soviet made 120mm mortars.

Through the blizzard, a battalion of the 1st Patiala Infantry moved in deliberate, relentless tactical formation. Clad in heavy high-altitude down parkas, fleece-lined boots, and equipped with snow goggles, all funnelled through the newly metalled, all-weather runway at Srinagar, the Indian soldiers moved with high morale and lethal coordination. Above them, the sky hummed with the steady drone of transport aircraft maintaining an unbroken airbridge to the valley, dropping ammunition and hot rations right up to the forward ridgelines.

Opposite them, scrambling backwards through the red-stained snow, the retreating columns of tribal lashkars and incognito Pakistani regular officers were in total disarray. Their thin blanket cloaks provided no warmth against the sub-zero gale, and their mixed bolt-action rifles were no match for the sweeping fire of the Indian heavy weaponry. ℴ

”Forward! Move up the mortar section!” shouted Major Jaswant Singh, his face dusted with frost as he signalled to his men. ”Don’t let them reform at the ridge! Push them toward the gorge!”

The Indian advance was implacable. Driven by superior logistics, high-altitude equipment, and winter gear, the troops broke the encirclement that had previously pinned down isolated garrisons. The tribal raiders, abandoned by their commanders and dying of hypothermia, dropped their weapons and fled west toward Muzaffarabad and Mirpur, while heavy skirmishes raged further north across the icy crags of Gilgit-Baltistan.

As the sun broke weakly through the storm clouds, revealing the shattered remains of an enemy defensive bunker, a patrol of Sikh soldiers halted near a frozen outcrop. Half-buried in the snow lay the bodies of a dozen combatants clad in civilian Pathan attire.

Subedar Gurmukh Singh knelt beside one of the fallen men, brushing away the ice crusted over the corpse’s shoulder. Beneath the local cloak, he pulled back the collar of a standard-issue British-Indian Army winter tunic. Reaching into the inner pocket, Gurmukh pulled out an official military identity book bound in dark oilcloth.

He opened it, reading the stamped lettering in the pale morning light: Captain Tariq Mahmood, 2nd Battalion, 7th Punjab Regiment, Royal Pakistan Army.

”Subedar-sahib!” called a young havildar, holding up a second paybook retrieved from another corpse nearby. ”This one’s a Warrant Officer from the Baloch Regiment. His official service records, military ID, and army paybook are intact.”

Gurmukh took the documents, his face hardening as he looked out across the snowfield strewn with similar corpses, Pakistani regulars fighting under the guise of tribal irregulars, carrying full military identification in their pockets.

”Collect every single paybook, every dog tag, and every official document,” Gurmukh ordered quietly, placing the oilcloth booklet into a waterproof leather pouch. ”These aren’t just dead soldiers, Havildar. This is the proof New Delhi needs to break the enemy’s lies before the entire world.”

South Block, Delhi

In New Delhi, inside the strategic war room at South Block, a massive topographical map of Jammu and Kashmir lay spread across a broad teak table. Red and blue wooden markers were scattered along the mountain corridors stretching from Uri to Muzaffarabad, and from Jhangar to Mirpur and Gilgit.

Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta stood over the map, his eyes tracing the operational arrows. Beside him, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel leaned heavily on his silver-tipped cane, his khadi shawl draped neatly over his shoulders. Opposite them stood Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa, Deputy Chief of the General Staff, holding a stack of freshly decoded field dispatches.

”The pre-spring counteroffensive has exceeded our initial operational estimates, Prime Minister,” General Cariappa reported, pointing his wooden tip at the high passes near Zoji La and the approaches to Muzaffarabad. ”The airbridge into Srinagar has allowed us to move three heavy regiments with full artillery support into the sector before the snows could block the roads. The enemy’s lines have collapsed. The tribal lashkars are fleeing in panic, and the Pakistani regulars operating incognito have taken catastrophic casualties.”

Cariappa set a thick, sealed folder onto the mahogany desk. ”Furthermore, 1st Patiala and 4th Kumaon have recovered over two hundred official military identity cards, paybooks, and service records from the corpses of Pakistani army personnel killed in action inside Kashmir territory. There is no longer any plausible deniability. Karachi’s regular army is actively waging war on Indian soil.”

Patel picked up one of the paybooks, inspecting the official seal of the Pakistan Army with a cold, grim smile.

”This strips the veil from Mr Jinnah’s pretences,” Patel said, his gravelly voice filled with quiet force. ”They claimed these were ’liberation fighters’ over whom Karachi had no control. With these documents, we will pin them to the wall at the United Nations and in every embassy in Europe.”

Ram looked up from the map, his face calm, steady, and unreadable.

”General Cariappa,” Ram said softly, his voice carrying an absolute weight. ”Our initial stance was one of containment, holding the valley and securing the main arterial routes. But the speed of this enemy retreat changes the strategic calculus completely.”

”Prime Minister?” Cariappa asked, leaning forward.

”We abandon our previous caution,” Ram stated firmly. ”The enemy expected us to hunker down until spring thaw. Instead, we strike now. I want a full-scale, all-front advance signed off immediately. Direct the army to push forward along every strategic pass, every river crossing, and every high front toward Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, and northern Gilgit before Pakistani regular divisions can officially reinforce the fleeing remnants and entrench themselves.”

Patel nodded in sharp agreement, striking his cane against the floor. ”Clear them out completely, Cariappa. Do not give them time to dig in or build fortified lines along the ridges. Drive the wedge all the way to the international border while we hold the logistical advantage. We will deal with the diplomatic fallout from a position of absolute territorial control.”

Cariappa stood straight, a sharp, disciplined gleam in his eyes as he saluted. ”The operational orders for the pre-spring offensive will be cabled to Western Command within the hour, Prime Minister.”

Socotra Island

Two thousand miles to the south, far out in the vast, sun-baked expanse of the Indian Ocean, the azure waters crashed against the jagged, limestone cliffs of Socotra Island.

Anchored in the natural harbour were two massive Indian merchant vessels, the Victory-class freighter MV Bharat Gaurav and the Liberty-class supply ship MV Rashtrapati. Flying the tricolour flag of the Republic of India, the ships rode low in the water, heavy with cargo.

Near the rocky shoreline, a motor launch cut through the surf, carrying Captain Subramaniam Iyengar of the Indian Navy and a landing party of engineers and naval ratings. As the boat grounded on the white coral sand, the men stepped ashore, looking around at the surreal, alien landscape.

Dominating the barren plateau above were dense groves of Dragon’s Blood trees, their thick, umbrella-like canopies casting dark shadows against the stark red earth. But as Captain Iyengar scanned the coastal strip with his binoculars, his expression turned grim.

”Look at this, Mr Nambiar,” Iyengar said, handing the glasses to his Chief Engineer. ”Not a single administrative building left standing. Not a single shed, pier, or radio tower.”

Nambiar looked through the lenses, whistling softly. ”The British didn’t just evacuate when they handed over the island’s lease, Captain. They demolished every brick, tore up the landing strips, and smashed the rainwater cisterns before pulling out. Pure colonial pettiness.”

”They thought they would leave us an uninhabitable rock,” Iyengar said with a faint, dry smile. ”They underestimated the foresight of South Block. When Prime Minister Gupta ordered these ships loaded in Bombay, the British thought we were sending grain. They didn’t realise half our holds were filled with structural steel, prefabricated corrugated housing, diesel generators, and desalination units.”

Behind them, heavy landing craft were already approaching the shore, laden with tractors, bags of cement, and modular steel frames. Indian sailors and engineers leapt into the shallow water, hauling heavy steel beams onto the sand with rhythmic, energetic chants.

Within hours, the quiet, exotic island echoed with the metallic clang of construction. Rotary drills bit into the limestone, diesel generators roared to life, and the light frame of an airfield control station and radio relay hub took shape under the blazing tropical sun.

By late afternoon, a tall, galvanised steel flagpole had been erected on the highest bluff overlooking the Arabian Sea routes.

Captain Iyengar stood at attention alongside fifty naval ratings, their white uniforms crisp against the red soil. As a bugler sounded the salute, the Indian national flag unfurled into the stiff ocean breeze, its navy-blue Ashoka Chakra spinning brightly against the sky.

”Look at that flag, Captain,” Nambiar murmured, standing beside his commander as the tricolour snapped in the wind. ”Four months ago, the British ruled these waters. Today, Socotra and Masirah stand as our permanent sentinels over the mouth of the Persian Gulf and the sea lanes of Africa.”

”They tried to leave us a desert,” Iyengar replied softly, watching the MV Bharat Gaurav unload its final crates of building supplies. ”We are turning it into an unsinkable aircraft carrier for the Republic.”
