Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

On the night of October 21, 1947, the winter chill over the western border of Jammu and Kashmir was shattered by the harsh, metallic clatter of heavy motor transport and the guttural roar of thousands of voices echoing through the ravines of the Jhelum valley.

At the border outpost near Muzaffarabad, Subedar Hari Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces stood atop the stone guardhouse, staring into the moonlit fog. Beside him, a young constable adjusted his heavy woollen turban, shivering against the wind.

”Subedar-Sahab,” the constable whispered, pointing a trembling finger down the winding dirt road that crossed the bridge from Hazara. ”Headlights. Dozens of them. Trucks...”

Before Hari Singh could raise his binoculars, the dark valley exploded in a terrifying roar of automatic weapons fire. Tracers carved bright red arcs through the night air, striking the wooden guard posts. Heavy mortar shells rained down on the state barracks, tearing away stone walls and igniting the timber roofs.

”Over six thousand raiders!” a panicked messenger screamed, bursting up the stone stairs, his tunic soaked in blood. ”They have crossed the border at Domel and Muzaffarabad! They are equipped with heavy British-pattern Bren guns, mortars, and military transport! They are burning the town!”

Down in the streets of Muzaffarabad, the situation rapidly turned catastrophic. Fanatical calls to religious war echoed from loudspeakers mounted on local minarets. Spurred by weeks of communal agitation broadcast from across the border, large sections of the local population joined the incoming invaders with feverish zeal. Local mobs took up arms, guiding the Pashtun lashkars through the back alleys, pointing out state armouries, cutting phone lines to Srinagar, and assisting in the slaughter of state officials and non-Muslim civilians.

Twenty miles to the east, inside the historic river fortress at Domel, an even darker tragedy was unfolding.

The fortress guarded the critical bridge over the Jhelum River, the single gateway into the heart of the Kashmir Valley. Commanding the garrison was Lieutenant Colonel Narain Singh, a veteran officer fiercely loyal to Maharaja Hari Singh. The garrison was composed of both Dogra and Muslim companies of the 4th Jammu and Kashmir Infantry.

Inside his command office, Colonel Narain Singh was furiously trying to restore communications with the state capital when his second-in-command, a senior Muslim officer of the battalion, walked into the room accompanied by four armed guards.

”Colonel-sahab,” the officer said, his voice cold, devoid of emotion as he drew his Service Enfield revolver.

Narain Singh looked up, his hand hovering near his holster. ”Major? What is the meaning of this? Muzaffarabad has fallen! We must blow the bridge immediately!”

”The bridge will remain standing, Colonel,” the Major replied calmly. ”And your command ends tonight.”

Before Narain Singh could draw his sidearm, the room echoed with deafening gunshots. The Colonel collapsed across his desk, his blood pooling over the tactical maps. Simultaneously, mutinous soldiers across the fortress turned their weapons upon their Hindu and Dogra comrades as they slept in the barracks.

By dawn, the mutineers had opened the heavy iron gates of the Domel fortress. They welcomed the incoming Pashtun lashkars with cheers and turned the fortress’s heavy artillery pieces around, shelling the remaining loyal state troops retreating toward Baramulla.

Concurrently, deep in the high northern territory of Gilgit, British military influence was executing its own calculated betrayal. Major William Brown, the British officer commanding the Gilgit Scouts, was quietly coordinating with local rebel leaders to arrest the Maharaja’s appointed Governor, Brigadier Ghansara Singh, preparing to hand the entire strategic northern frontier over to Pakistan.

The news reached the Maharaja’s palace in Jammu on October 22. Stripped of his forces by mutiny and treason, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the formal emergency request, triggering the Mutual Defence Pact with India. The pact, executed in late September, instantly transformed the defence of Jammu and Kashmir into a direct, legal, and constitutional obligation of the Republic of India.

At four o’clock on the morning of October 24, the priority telegraph printer inside B.N. Mullick’s intelligence office in South Block chattered relentlessly. Within half an hour, an emergency meeting was convened in Ram Prasad Gupta’s private study.

Jawaharlal Nehru sat near the desk, his face pale with shock and outrage as he read the incoming operational dispatches. Patel sat opposite him, his wooden cane planted firmly between his feet, his jaw set like granite.

Mullick stood before them, holding a red-bound intelligence folder. ”Prime Minister, the invasion is progressing rapidly down the Jhelum valley. Baramulla is under heavy attack, and the raiders are less than forty-five miles from Srinagar. But the more critical finding concerns the strategic hand guiding this invasion.”

Nehru looked up sharply. ”What have your intercepts revealed, Mullick?”

”This operation, designated ’Operation Gulmarg’, was not hatched by rogue tribal leaders or local Pakistani politicians,” Mullick stated firmly. ”It was planned and authorised directly by the British military establishment in London.”

Nehru gasped softly, leaning back. ”London? Are you suggesting Whitehall authorised an armed invasion of territory bound to us by a defence treaty?”

”The evidence is conclusive, External Affairs Minister,” Mullick replied, reading from a decoded high-grade cypher text. ”Senior officials in the British War Office and Commonwealth Relations Office in London approved the operational blueprint weeks ago. They view Kashmir, specifically the Gilgit and strategic northern corridors bordering the Soviet Union, as too vital to be left in the hands of an independent, non-aligned India. London explicitly signalled to the Pakistani high command in Rawalpindi that Britain would turn a blind eye to the tribal incursion, provided it secured the northern territories for Pakistan.”

”The hypocritical bastards,” Patel growled, his deep voice trembling with cold fury as his hand struck the armrest. ”They preach international law and democratic transitions in public, while authorising tribal massacres in private to keep their strategic foothold in Asia!”

Ram Prasad Gupta sat silently behind his wide mahogany desk, his hands loosely folded, his expression unreadable and icy.

”It is a classic imperial gambit, Sardar,” Ram said softly, his voice devoid of emotional anger, reflecting pure, mathematical clarity. ”London assumed our young government would panic, that our military command, still relying on senior British officers, would be paralysed by conflicting orders, and that we would accept a fait accompli in Kashmir. They calculated that we lacked the resolve and logistics to fight in the mountains.”

Ram looked at Mullick. ”Keep the British high officials under strict, discreet intelligence surveillance, but do not leak this finding to the press yet. We will not engage London in a war of diplomatic protests. We will answer them on the ground in Srinagar. When their proxy force is shattered against our rifles, Whitehall’s strategic scheme will collapse into dust.”

At five o’clock that morning, under a cold, overcast sky at Willingdon Airfield, the roar of dozens of twin-engine Pratt & Whitney radial engines filled the air.

The flight line was a scene of intense, disciplined military mobilisation. Long columns of Indian Army soldiers, belonging to the 1st Battalion, Sikh Regiment, under Lieutenant Colonel L.P. Sen, and elements of the 4th Kumaon Regiment, were marching efficiently up the ramps of a vast fleet of C-47 Dakota transport aircraft.

The soldiers were impeccably equipped for cold-weather combat. Every man wore heavy, wool-lined parkas, thermal inner garments, waterproof leather boots, and fitted mountain goggles, equipment procured and stockpiled under the logistics programs Ram had overseen. Slung over their shoulders were standard Lee-Enfield rifles, supplemented by thousands of newly unboxed MP 40 submachine guns and heavy Vickers machine guns.

Ram and Patel stood on the edge of the tarmac, wrapped in simple shawls against the freezing wind, watching the staging.

”Every available transport aircraft in the country has been mobilised, Ram,” Patel said, his eyes following a squad of Sikh soldiers loading crates of mortar shells into a Dakota’s cargo hold. ”If the airbase at Srinagar falls before these boys touch down, they will be flying straight into an operational disaster.”

”The Srinagar runway is fully metalled and secured, Sardar,” Ram replied, his steady gaze fixed on the lead aircraft. ”The Maharaja’s loyal guards and our advance logistics officers have secured the perimeter. They will land, establish an impenetrable defensive bridgehead, and hold the valley until our heavy road convoys cross the Banihal Pass.”

The engines of the lead Dakota surged to a deafening roar. The aircraft rolled rapidly down the runway, its wheels lifting cleanly off the tarmac, turning north toward the jagged, snow-covered horizon. One by one, the iron transports took to the sky, carrying the armed weight of the Republic to defend the Himalayan crown.

By eight o’clock that evening, the focus of the executive leadership shifted from the freezing northern mountains to the strategic expanse of the Indian Ocean Rim.

Inside the high-security naval briefing room at South Block, Ram and Patel sat opposite Vice Admiral R. D. Katari, the senior operational officer of the Indian Navy. A massive maritime chart stretched across the far wall, detailing the trade routes from the Arabian Sea down to the Southern Ocean.

”Vice Admiral,” Ram began, setting a thick naval ledger on the table. ”While world attention is fixed on the fighting in Kashmir, we must execute the strategic consolidation of our maritime perimeter. Under the territorial transfer agreements signed with Great Britain in August, India formally purchased and assumed full legal sovereignty over key island territories: Socotra, Masirah, the Maldives, Mauritius, the Seychelles, and the Chagos Archipelago.”

Katari leaned over the chart, his eyes tracing the vast distances. ”Standing by for operational orders, Prime Minister.”

”You will immediately organise and dispatch a dedicated naval task force,” Ram instructed. ”You are to assign exactly one Liberty ship and one high-speed Victory ship from our newly acquired merchant transport fleet to each of these island territories.”

Katari studied the positions. ”Socotra and Masirah are located in highly sensitive waters near the mouth of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, Prime Minister. What is the operational status on those two islands?”

”Socotra and Masirah will be entirely unpopulated,” Ram explained precisely. ”When the British transferred those protectorates to us in August, the local Sultans exercised their option to relocate their populations to the Arabian mainland. You will find those islands empty. But do not assume the departing British garrisons or colonial administrators left behind functional facilities. Assume they stripped every building, disabled the radio towers, and spiked the fresh-water wells out of institutional bitterness.”

”Then our vessels must carry complete engineering and logistical self-sufficiency,” Katari noted, taking rapid notes.

”Precisely,” Ram said. ”Every transport bound for Socotra and Masirah must be loaded to capacity with heavy construction materials, pre-fabricated steel barracks, water-desalination units, diesel generators, and heavy defensive armament, including 76mm anti-ship coastal guns and anti-aircraft batteries. You will schedule regular, uninterrupted supply convoys from Bombay and Cochin to bring in civilian construction labour, engineering corps, and garrison rotations.”

Patel leaned forward, his palm resting on the southern expanse of the map, covering the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Chagos.

”Unlike Socotra, the Maldives, Mauritius, and the Seychelles possess established local populations and are receiving our newly appointed Indian Civil Administration officers,” Ram continued. ”In those southern territories, the Navy’s role is to regularise supply chains from the mainland, maintain a visible, permanent naval presence, and construct long-range radar and radio monitoring stations.”

Ram stood up, stepping closer to the chart, his hand sweeping across the water toward the southwest.

”Keep a constant, watchful eye on the horizon, Vice Admiral,” Ram concluded, his voice ringing with monumental foresight. ”Position our southern island outposts with a direct, vigilant watch on Reunion, the Comoros, and Madagascar. The old European empires are retreating, but they will leave behind deep shadows in these waters.

”Of course, we cannot forget Pakistan; keep a watchful eye on their naval actions as well. By establishing our permanent garrisons on Socotra, Masirah, Chagos, and the southern islands today, we ensure that the Indian Ocean remains an iron moat protecting this sovereign Republic forever.”

Katari closed his briefing folio, bowing his head with deep, resolute respect. ”The task forces will weigh anchor within forty-eight hours, Prime Minister. The ocean perimeter will be locked down.”

Outside South Block, the night sky over New Delhi was clear, dark, and filled with brilliant, cold stars. High above, the steady hum of transport aircraft engines echoed into the northern sky, while far to the west and south, the ships of the Republic prepared to sail, securing the land and sea borders of a nation that would never bow its head again.
