Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Ram nodded slowly, absorbing the intelligence detail. He motioned for Mullick to sit back down for a moment longer, then turned his gaze toward Nehru and Patel.

The room grew quiet once more, save for the rhythmic pitter-patter of the rain against the windowpanes. Ram leaned back into his leather armchair, placing his fingers together in a contemplative pyramid.

”This discovery raises a far deeper, far more fundamental question, gentlemen,” Ram said, his voice quiet, heavy, and filled with monumental gravity. ”A question that touches the very core of what this Republic is to become.”

Nehru and Patel looked at him intently.

”Consider the sequence of events,” Ram continued, his tone measured and analytical. ”The Muslim League argued, and fought with unrelenting hostility, that Muslims on this subcontinent shared a primary, overriding brotherhood with their coreligionists across the world, an allegiance that transcended thousands of years of shared soil, shared history, and shared neighbours. They refused to live in a pluralistic, unified India. They demanded, fought for, and ultimately carved out a separate nation-state based on that international religious identity.”

Ram paused, pointing toward the dossier of church communications lying on the desk.

”Now, we see that the Christian ecclesiastical hierarchies, too, look across foreign shores for their ultimate security, their political instructions, and their spiritual allegiance,” Ram stated, his dark eyes burning into both men. ”When faced with the political reality of a sovereign, independent Indian state, their immediate instinct was not to trust their fellow citizens or the laws of this land, but to panic, contact London and Washington, and serve as host bodies for foreign imperial intelligence.”

Ram leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the rosewood desk.

”They are not asking for a separate country today, because their numbers are scattered and their leaders are cautious,” Ram said, voicing the unspoken dread that lingered in the shadows of post-partition India. ”But if their primary loyalty remains tethered to foreign capitals and overseas religious authorities, what happens tomorrow? If their demographic density grows in the South or in the tribal northeast, will they, too, claim that their faith makes them a separate nation? Will they, too, ask for another partition twenty or thirty years down the line?”

The question hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating cloud.

Jawaharlal Nehru shifted in his seat, his hands resting on the arms of his chair. He looked visibly distressed by the proposition, his high forehead furrowed in deep, passionate contemplation.

”Ram, I must vigorously reject the premise of that fear,” Nehru declared, his voice rising with that characteristic, idealistic eloquence that commanded attention, though tempered now by the sobering responsibilities of statehood. ”To view our Christian citizens through the narrow, paranoid prism of the Muslim League’s communalism is to commit a grave, historical error!”

Nehru stood up, pacing slowly across the thick Persian rug, his hands clasped behind his back.

”The Christian communities of the South: the Syrian Christians of Malabar, the Thomas Christians, have been an integral, peaceful thread of the Indian tapestry for nearly two millennia, long before the first British ship ever dropped anchor in Western waters or the word ’imperialism’ was ever coined!” Nehru asserted passionately.

”They are as indigenous to this soil as the monsoon rains. What Mullick has uncovered is not a popular treason of the Christian masses; it is the cynical, unprincipled exploitation of religious institutions by a dying British Empire! We must distinguish sharply between foreign imperial instigators using church networks and our own native citizens who practice the Christian faith.”

Nehru turned back toward Ram and Patel, pointing a finger for emphasis. ”If we begin to suspect every religious minority of inherent, latent treason simply because their faith has transnational roots, we destroy the very idea of India! India is not a narrow, monolithic theological state; it is a grand, secular civilisation. If we build a just, modern, secular republic, a state that guarantees absolute freedom of conscience, equal opportunity, economic security, and scientific progress, our minorities will have no reason to look toward foreign shores!

”Their loyalty will be forged in the crucible of shared progress and democratic citizenship, not extracted through suspicion and fear. They will not ask for a separate country, because this country will belong to them as much as to anyone else!”

Sardar Patel listened quietly, his head tilted, his face an immovable wall of weathered granite. When Nehru finished, Patel let out a soft, low breath, leaning forward heavily on his walking stick. His reaction was devoid of Nehru’s romantic philosophy, grounded entirely in the cold, unyielding realities of power, human nature, and statecraft.

”Jawaharlal’s idealism is noble,” Patel began, his deep, gravelly voice cutting through the quiet room like heavy iron sliding across stone. ”It is the vision of a statesman who sees what India ought to be. But my duty as Home Minister is to safeguard what India is, and to ensure that she survives long enough to reach that ideal.”

Patel turned his sharp, unblinking eyes to Ram.

”You ask if they will ask for a separate country tomorrow, Ram,” Patel said plainly. ”My answer is simple: they will ask for whatever they are allowed to get away with. Politics is not born out of theological theories; it is born out of power vacuums and administrative weakness.”

Patel struck the floor gently with his stick. ”The Muslim League succeeded in cutting away our limbs not merely because of religious ideology, but because the British colonial state actively nurtured, armed, and patronised their separatism as a counterweight to national unity, and because we, in our soft-heartedness, allowed that communal poison to fester until it became a gangrene that required amputation.”

Patel leaned closer to the desk, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, razor-sharp realism.

”Religion when restricted to the home and the temple, the mosque or the church, is a private solace,” Patel asserted. ”But the moment a religious group relies on foreign money, looks to foreign governments for political protection, or allows foreign intelligence officers to operate within its walls, it ceases to be a faith; it becomes a political faction and a security threat. We cannot afford the luxury of naivety.”

Patel looked at Nehru, his tone softening slightly with respect, but remaining firm. ”Jawaharlal says a just secular state will keep them loyal. I say a strong, uncompromising state will keep them loyal. We do not persecute any man for how he prays to God. A Christian, a Hindu, a Sikh, or a Muslim is equal before the law of the Republic. But we must lay down an iron, unyielding line: no foreign funding for religious institutions. No foreign missionaries controlling domestic schools and land trusts; rather, no missionary activities in India at all. If someone wants to convert, they can do so, but we will not allow people to convert others by force or inducement. No foreign allegiance that overrides the Constitution of India!”

Patel looked back at Ram, his jaw set in iron determination. ”If we strip away all foreign financial and political patronage, if we bring their trusts under strict Indian civil law, and if we make it crystal clear that the Indian Union will crush any attempt at regional or religious separatism with the full, merciless weight of the state, then no, Ram, they will never ask for a separate country. They will adapt, they will integrate, and they will remain peaceful citizens of the Union. Loyalty is maintained when the cost of treason is made impossibly, devastatingly high.”

Ram sat in absolute silence for a long moment, watching the two giants of the modern Indian state. In Nehru’s passionate, civilizational secularism lay the moral legitimacy and inclusive vision of the new Republic; in Patel’s iron-fisted, uncompromising realism lay the physical armour without which no republic could endure in a hostile world.

Ram leaned forward, a look of profound satisfaction and absolute clarity on his face.

”Both of you have spoken the twin truths upon which this nation must be built,” Ram declared, his voice echoing with monumental authority.

He looked at Nehru. ”Jawaharlal is right: we will not transform this Republic into a paranoid, narrow state that treats its own law-abiding citizens as enemies based on their faith. The Syrian Christians and the native believers of the South are children of this soil. We will grant them absolute religious freedom, protect their civil rights, and integrate them fully into the grand project of Indian industrialisation and nation-building.”

Ram then turned his gaze to Patel, nodding firmly. ”And Vallabhbhai is right: we will never permit foreign powers to use religion as a Trojan horse to fracture our Union. The lesson of Partition has been written in blood, and we will not allow it to be repeated in the South or in the Northeast.”

Ram picked up his pen, drawing a clean, bold line across the executive order log on his desk.

”Therefore, our policy on this matter is permanently set,” Ram commanded, looking directly at Mullick.

”Mullick-ji, in addition to the deportations and the private ultimatum to London, you will draft the framework for a new, permanent legislative decree: the Foreign Contributions and Religious Institutions Regulation Act. Under this act, all foreign financial remittances to domestic religious bodies will be subjected to mandatory state audit and clearance.

”All foreign missionaries will be phased out and replaced entirely by indigenous Indian clergy. Missionary activities shall not be permitted in India. No foreign national will be permitted to hold administrative or land-owning authority within religious or educational trusts on Indian soil.”

Mullick bowed his head, his pen flying across his notepad. ”It shall be drafted immediately, Prime Minister.”

”We will offer our minorities full equality, absolute religious freedom, and total protection under the law,” Ram concluded, standing up from his desk, his posture tall, unyielding, and monumental against the backdrop of the capital outside. ”But we will cut off the foreign umbilical cord entirely. India belongs to her people, and her sovereignty will never again be auctioned, subverted, or divided by foreign powers hiding behind the cloak of faith.”

Nehru took a deep breath, nodding slowly in agreement, satisfied that civil liberties and constitutional principles had been preserved. Patel smiled grimly, satisfied that the state’s security perimeter had been reinforced with cold iron.

Mullick closed his dispatch briefcase with a quiet, decisive click, bowed to the three leaders, and walked swiftly out of the study, carrying the executive mandates that would safeguard the young Republic’s southern flank.

Outside, the last grey clouds parted completely, exposing a wide expanse of clear blue sky over New Delhi. The late afternoon sun poured into the study, bathing the strategic maps of the continent in brilliant, golden light. The shadows of empire had been met not with panic or hesitation, but with the cold, enduring steel of a nation that had finally mastered its own destiny.
