Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

The world press exploded with coverage of the Geneva Settlement. It was the international community’s first true, detailed look at the new Prime Minister of India, Ram Prasad Gupta.

Because of the delicate diplomatic arrangements agreed upon in Washington and Geneva, only the official narrative, that France was bestowing a voluntary ”independence gift” of its Indian enclaves and ocean territories to the young Republic, was publicised worldwide.

The New York Times (United States):

”A NEW GIANT IN ASIA: THE GENEVA SETTLEMENT

In a remarkable display of post-war diplomacy, Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta of India and French Foreign Minister Georges Bidault signed a landmark accord in Geneva yesterday. The agreement provides for the peaceful, voluntary transfer of all French territories in India, including mainland enclaves and strategic Indian Ocean Island possessions, as a historic ’independence gift’ to the young Republic. Observers in Washington note that Prime Minister Gupta has emerged as a formidable, pragmatic statesman capable of commanding the respect of both Western and Eastern powers...”

Pravda (Soviet Union):

”VICTORY OVER IMPERIALISM: FRENCH COLONIALISM CRUMBLES IN ASIA

The signing of the Geneva Accord marks a historic defeat for Western colonial decay. Under the resolute leadership of Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta, the sovereign Republic of India has compelled French imperialists to liquidate their mainland enclaves and Indian Ocean bases. The Soviet Union welcomes this monumental step toward the complete liberation of Asian peoples from Western capitalist domination...”

The Times of London (United Kingdom):

”THE SHIFTING BALANCE IN THE INDIAN OCEAN

The Geneva agreement, transferring French mainland possessions and strategic ocean island territories to New Delhi, confirms the rapid emergence of India as the dominant regional authority in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Rim. Prime Minister Gupta’s quiet, uncompromising diplomacy has achieved in days what decades of colonial negotiations failed to resolve. Whitehall must now adjust to a geopolitical reality where New Delhi exercises absolute sovereign authority over its coastal and oceanic waters...”

Le Figaro (France):

”A SOBER DEPARTURE FROM THE EAST

With heavy hearts, the Foreign Office has concluded a territorial exchange in Geneva. While presented as a gesture of enduring friendship and an ’independence gift’ to India comprising our mainland holdings and Indian Ocean islands, the reality remains a profound shift in French global presence. France bids farewell to Pondicherry and its eastern waters, leaving behind a legacy of culture and law, as Prime Minister Gupta takes full command of the subcontinent’s destinies...”𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

The Mainichi Shimbun (Japan):

”ASIA FOR ASIANS: INDIA’S DIPLOMATIC TRIUMPH IN GENEVA

The peaceful acquisition of French territories and strategic ocean footholds by India under Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta represents a historic watershed for all Asian nations rebuilding from the ashes of war. India has proven that Asian sovereignty can no longer be ignored or dictated to by European capitals...”

The Hindustan Times (India):

”UNIFICATION COMPLETE: FRENCH ENCLAVES AND OCEAN TERRITORIES RETURN TO THE MOTHERLAND

In a glorious diplomatic victory achieved at Geneva by Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta and Comrade V.K. Krishna Menon, the ancient French enclaves of Pondicherry, Karikal, Yanam, Mahe, Chandernagore, and surrounding Indian Ocean Island territories have been formally restored to the Republic of India. The Motherland steps into a new era of unbroken territorial sovereignty...”

Far to the east, inside the Kuomintang military headquarters in Kunming, Yunnan Province, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek sat examining an urgent intelligence dispatch brought by his chief of staff.

”Generalissimo,” the officer reported excitedly, standing at rigid attention, ”a sudden, massive counter-insurgency sweep launched by northern Burmese hill tribes has completely shattered the Burmese communist guerrilla strongholds along the frontier! The fleeing communist remnants were driven straight across the border into our prepared defensive sectors in southern Yunnan!”

Chiang Kai-shek’s eyes lit up with rare triumph as he adjusted his military tunic. ”Our regular divisions engaged them?”

”Total liquidation, Generalissimo! Over four thousand armed communist cadres were trapped against the river line by our 93rd Division and destroyed. Our southern flank in Yunnan is completely secure! It is our first decisive operational victory over communist forces in this theatre this year!”

Chiang smiled, leaning back in his chair, entirely unaware of the covert operational orders issued weeks earlier from South Block in New Delhi through the Samvardhan trade network. ”A glorious day for the Republic of China! Send a commendation to the division commander.”

Simultaneously, in the rugged caves of Yan’an, Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong sat over a wide map table with Zhou Enlai, staring at the disaster reports from southern Yunnan.

”How could an entire armed sector of Burmese communist cadres be wiped out in seventy-two hours?” Mao demanded, his voice thick with cold anger as he slammed his hand onto the table.

”The Burmese hill tribes struck them with extraordinary tactical coordination and heavy automatic weapons, Chairman,” Zhou Enlai explained, shaking his head in deep frustration. ”They bypassed their forward pickets and drove our comrades directly into the waiting artillery zones of the Kuomintang regular divisions in Yunnan. It was an operational trap of absolute brutality.”

”A bitter loss,” Mao muttered, striking the table with his wooden pipe. ”We have lost our southern infiltration corridor into Southeast Asia. Reevaluate all southern border operations immediately! Someone organised those tribes.”

Neither Mao nor Zhou Enlai had the slightest suspicion that the invisible hand behind their military catastrophe belonged to the quiet Prime Minister sitting in Lutyens’ Delhi.

Late that evening, a long-range VIP transport aircraft glided smoothly onto the lighted runway of Willingdon Airfield in New Delhi.

Ram Prasad Gupta and V.K. Krishna Menon stepped out into the warm midnight air of the capital, carrying the signed leather folios of the Geneva Settlement. Waiting on the tarmac to receive them were Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru.

”Welcome home, Prime Minister,” Nehru said, stepping forward with a wide, glowing smile as he shook Ram’s hand warmly. ”You have secured a masterstroke for the Republic. Geneva will be remembered for generations.”

”The French enclaves and ocean territories are ours,” Ram replied softly, handing the signed treaty dossier to Patel. ”Pondicherry, Karikal, Yanam, Mahe, Chandernagore, and our maritime perimeters are integrated forever.”

Patel took the heavy document, opening it under the yellow glare of the airfield floodlights. His weathered face broke into a deep, satisfied grin. ”A magnificent achievement, Ram. You have closed the eastern coast and secured the sea lanes. And now that you are back and Geneva is sealed, it is time for our next planned move on the northern board.”

”Everything is prepared in Srinagar?” Ram asked as they walked toward the waiting staff cars.

”Everything,” Patel confirmed, his voice dropping into a hard, metallic tone. ”Maharaja Hari Singh has signed the instruments. We held back the announcement until you returned with the Geneva treaty. Tomorrow, the world learns that Kashmir is anchored to India by iron.”

One week after the return of the delegation from Geneva, in exact accordance with the planned strategic schedule, a major international press conference was convened in Srinagar.

Inside the ornate assembly hall of the Hari Niwas Palace overlooking the quiet waters of Dal Lake, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stood side by side with Maharaja Hari Singh before a crowded assembly of domestic and international press correspondents, radio broadcasters, and foreign observers.

Maharaja Hari Singh stepped forward to the brass microphone array, holding an official parchment bound with red silk ribbon.

”In light of rising regional uncertainties, cross-border infiltration threats, and external security pressures,” Maharaja Hari Singh announced, reading from the signed document in a clear, resonant voice, ”the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has formally executed and unveiled a Mutual Defence Pact with the Republic of India.

”Under the terms of this pact, signed last week and formally effective as of today, the Indian Armed Forces are granted immediate, unrestricted authority to deploy military garrisons, establish air defence installations, and secure all mountain passes across the State of Jammu and Kashmir to guarantee its absolute territorial defence against any external aggression.”

Beside him, Sardar Patel stepped up to the microphone, his stern, immovable posture projecting an aura of absolute state power.

”Let every hostile element across our borders take clear note,” Patel declared, his deep voice echoing through the hall and carried by radio broadcasts to millions of listeners. ”An attack on any inch of Jammu and Kashmir is now legally, constitutionally, and operationally an attack on the Republic of India. We will defend this land, its mountains, and its people with the full, uncompromising power of our armed forces.”

Back in his private study at South Block, Ram Prasad Gupta listened to the radio broadcast echoing from the wooden cabinet speaker. He stood near the tall window, a calm, steady smile appearing on his face as he looked north toward the Himalayan horizon. The eastern coast was clear, the Indian Ocean Rim was locked down, and the northern crown was guarded by iron.
