Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Central Legislative Assembly, New Delhi

Ten days later, the grand circular chamber of the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi was packed to absolute capacity. Sunlight streamed down from the high clerestory windows, illuminating the gallery filled with journalists, diplomats, civil servants, and citizens. On the floor below, hundreds of parliamentarians sat in rapt silence as Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta stood at the centre podium, holding a crisp white legislative draft in his hand.

”Mr Speaker,” Ram’s voice echoed through the brass microphones, sounding clear, deliberate, and carrying an unbroken authority that commanded total silence across the house. ”I rise to move for the immediate consideration and passage of a measure that touches the very moral spine and economic future of our sovereign state: The Child Labour Abolition and Compulsory Education Act of 1948.”

A murmur rippled across the back benches, where several traditionalist members and industrial representatives leaned forward nervously.

”For two centuries under colonial misrule,” Ram continued, looking slowly across the assembly benches, ”the economic exploitation of our children was treated as an inevitable, unchangeable law of nature. Millions of our youngest citizens, some no older than six or seven, have been consumed by the insatiable maw of unregulated industrial greed and rural servitude.

”They have spent their childhoods breathing coal dust in underground shafts, inhaling toxic fumes in match factories, blistering their hands in carpet looms, and breaking stone along roadside ditches for pennies a day.”

Ram struck the wooden podium softly with his palm. ”A nation that builds its industrial wealth on the broken bones and stunted minds of its children is not an empire of progress; it is a moral graveyard. Today, this Republic draws an absolute line in the soil of history.”

Ram raised the paper, reading the core statutory clauses with metallic clarity:

”Clause One: From the date of enactment, the employment of any child under the age of twelve years in any commercial, industrial, agricultural, or domestic labour whatsoever is hereby declared a severe criminal offence against the Republic of India. Violators, whether factory owners, contractors, or landlords, shall face mandatory minimum imprisonment of three years without bail, alongside the total confiscation of their enterprise’s operating license.”

”Clause Two: For children between the ages of twelve and fifteen years, no full-time employment of any kind shall be permitted under any circumstances. Part-time vocational engagement shall be restricted strictly to a maximum of two hours per day, and shall require the explicit, formal written authorisation of the local School Administration Authority, which shall verify that such work in no way interferes with the child’s mandatory 5+3+2 academic attendance.”

Ram looked up, his gaze sweeping over the rows of seated parliamentarians. ”We are providing free schools. We are providing free textbooks. We are providing two warm, nutritious meals a day to every child in every village and town. Therefore, no employer and no parent can claim economic necessity for robbing a child of his mind and his future. The state takes full custody of the child’s fundamental right to learn.”

As Ram stepped back from the podium, the entire assembly chamber erupted into a staggering, thunderous ovation. Parliamentarians from every political faction, Congress veterans, Hindu Mahasabha members, socialist delegates, and regional representatives rose to their feet, thumping their wooden desks until the sound echoed like rolling thunder off the high stone dome. Even the most conservative members, recognising the overwhelming public mandate and the moral force of the measure, joined in the standing ovation.

The Speaker did not even require a roll-call vote. When he called for the ayes, a deafening chorus of ”AYE!” filled the hall. The Child Labour Abolition and Compulsory Education Act of 1948 was passed unanimously into law.

Calcutta and Kanpur

The passage of the law and the aggressive deployment of police inspectors to enforce child labour bans did not occur without friction. In the tight, smoke-choked industrial alleys of North Calcutta and the sprawling leather and textile belts of Kanpur, small, scattered pockets of resistance flared up during the final weeks of April.

Along Harrison Road in Calcutta, several dozen small-scale workshop proprietors, brass foundry owners, and traditional middleman contractors organised a public demonstration. Armed with handwritten banners, they gathered outside the Municipal Secretariat, shouting slogans against government intervention: ”Save Small Businesses!” and ”Do Not Rob the Poor of Their Bread!” A few miles away, a group of conservative rural landowners and conservative parents, incensed that their ten-year-old boys were no longer allowed to work full-time in the grain mills, attempted to block a convoy of Public Works Department trucks carrying school canvas tents into the rural districts of Howrah.

However, the protests died almost as quickly as they were manufactured.

When the small crowd of contractors assembled on Harrison Road, they expected to find sympathetic public crowds or hesitant municipal authorities. Instead, they found themselves surrounded by hundreds of working-class mothers and local women from the surrounding tenements. The women, having learned that the new government schools would provide free breakfast, free lunch, free books, and complete protection for their children, turned on the protesting workshop owners with fierce, protective fury.

”You want our five-year-olds back in your filthy brass shops to burn their fingers for two annas a day?” shouted a weaver’s wife, stepping right up to the lead contractor, her voice ringing down the street. ”The Prime Minister is giving our children milk, rice, and books! If you try to close those school tents, we will tear your workshops down with our bare hands!”

The crowd of women surged forward, surrounding and shaming the contractors until the workshop owners rolled up their banners and fled down the side alleys in total embarrassment.

When local police inspectors arrived at the site, backed by civil administration officers, they did not negotiate. Under the direct, uncompromising instructions issued by Sardar Patel’s Home Ministry, the lead agitators who had attempted to block the school tent trucks were promptly arrested under the new Act, their illegal child-labour operations padlocked, and heavy fines levied on their assets.

By the end of the month, any organised resistance from industrial exploiters had collapsed completely. The public momentum behind the free school meal scheme and mandatory education had become an unstoppable, triumphant tide sweeping across the countryside.

The Western Front: Thar Desert, Rajasthan

While the intellectual and social foundations of the Republic were being forged in the cities and villages of the interior, four hundred miles to the west, the brutal reality of war continued to test the nation’s perimeter of iron.

Across the vast, shimmering expanses of the Thar Desert, along the arid border sector between Jaisalmer and Rahim Yar Khan, the scorching heat of late April had turned the dunes into a blinding, furnace-like hell. The wind howled through the dry scrubland, carrying fine, biting yellow dust that coated weapons, clogged vehicle intakes, and burned the eyes of thousands of dug-in infantrymen.

Here, far from the icy high passes of Kashmir, the Pakistani High Command had launched a desperate, heavily backed mechanised thrust. Desperate to relieve the crushing pressure being exerted on their forces in the north by the Indian Patiala Infantry and heavy mortar divisions, the Pakistani Army had committed its reserve 1st Armoured Division elements, backed by regular infantry regiments, field artillery batteries, and tactical air support operating from airfield bases in Sindh.

Their objective was clear: cut the strategic railway link between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, pierce the thin desert perimeter, and force New Delhi to divert major military assets away from the northern theatre.

At three o’clock in the afternoon, under a pale, dust-veiled sun, the desert floor began to tremble.

Inside a deeply camouflaged, reinforced sandbag bunker set atop a strategic ridge line known as Feature 412, Major Devraj Singh of the 3rd Rajputana Rifles raised his artillery binoculars to his dust-goggles. Through the shimmering heat haze, he watched as a long, formidable column of Pakistani armour, consisting of American-made M4 Sherman medium tanks and motorised half-tracks, surged across the dry salt flats, kicking up massive clouds of white dust that rose two hundred feet into the air.

Beside him, Subedar Vikram Rathore checked the breech of a German-made PaK 40 75mm anti-tank gun, its long, muzzle-braked barrel protruding discreetly through a heavy netting covered in native desert scrub.

”They are coming in full battle formation, Major-sahib,” Subedar Rathore said calmly, his throat dry and cracked from the dust. ”At least thirty tanks, supported by two motorised infantry companies. They think our desert line is held by light border scouts.”

Major Devraj Singh let out a quiet, cold laugh. ”Let them come closer, Vikram. Prime Minister Gupta’s directives for the Western Front are crystal clear: hold the perimeter with iron discipline, consume the enemy’s material strength, and do not risk a single unnecessary Indian life in reckless counter-offensives.”

Overhead, the sudden, high-pitched scream of aircraft engines tore through the sky. A flight of four Pakistani Hawker Tempest fighter-bombers swooped low over the dunes, their wings glinting in the sun as they lined up to strafe the Indian forward positions, dropping high-explosive bombs that detonated across the sand, throwing massive geysers of rock and earth into the air.

”AIR DEFENCE! ENGAGE!” Devraj roared into his radio handset.

Instantly, from concealed, riveted positions positioned along the reverse slope of the ridge, four dual-mounted 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft batteries opened fire in disciplined, rapid-fire sequence. Pomp-pomp-pomp-pomp! Heavy tracer rounds sliced through the dust-filled sky in bright crimson arcs.

The lead Pakistani Tempest took a direct hit to its port wing root. A bright ball of orange fire erupted from the aircraft’s fuel tank, and the fighter flipped wildly out of control, crashing into a dune three miles behind the line in an explosion. The remaining three enemy aircraft jettisoned their payloads prematurely and banked steeply to the west, fleeing back toward Pakistani airspace.

”Air sweeps clear!” Devraj called out, switching his radio channel to the anti-tank battery network. ”All anti-tank crews... hold fire until the lead armour crosses Boundary Mark Eight Hundred. I want overlapping crossfire on the lead kill-zone.”

The Pakistani tank column pressed forward aggressively, their 75mm main guns firing on the move, hurling high-explosive shells that shattered against the rocky outcrops of Feature 412. The lead Sherman tank, its tracks grinding through the loose sand, crossed the eight-hundred-yard marker, its commander standing in the open turret hatch, waving his armoured column forward.

”FIRE!” Devraj commanded.

The desert ridge erupted into a thunderous wall of steel and flame.

Six hidden PaK 40 anti-tank guns and four Soviet-supplied 120mm heavy mortar batteries fired simultaneously. The high-velocity 75mm armour-piercing shells from the PaK 40s, engineered with cold, precise ballistic lethal efficiency, sliced through the desert air at three thousand feet per second.

The lead Pakistani Sherman took two direct hits to its front glacis plate. The heavy steel armour buckled violently, and the tank stopped dead in its tracks, thick black smoke pouring from its engine compartment before its internal ammunition store detonated, blowing the heavy turret forty feet into the air.

To its left, two more Pakistani half-tracks were torn apart by heavy 120mm mortar shells plunging directly onto their open troop compartments.

”Shift targets to the flank column!” Subedar Rathore shouted, pulling the lanyard of his PaK 40 again. CRACK! Another Pakistani medium tank caught fire, its right track shredded into flying iron links as it spun helplessly out of control in the loose sand.

For three hours, the Pakistani commander attempted to break the Indian defensive wall, hurling wave after wave of armour and infantry against Feature 412. But the Indian positions, constructed with meticulous engineering foresight, fully supplied with deep underground ammunition bunkers, and backed by long-range 105mm field howitzers firing from pre-calculated defensive grids, refused to yield a single yard of desert soil.

Every time the enemy tried to manoeuvre around the flanks, heavy, concentrated field artillery fire swept the open salt flats, pinning down the Pakistani infantry and forcing their armour into narrow, lethal choke points where the dug-in anti-tank guns systematically picked them off.

By five o’clock in the evening, the Pakistani attack had broken completely.

Leaving behind fourteen burning tank hulls, eight destroyed half-tracks, and scores of casualties scattered across the scorching sands, the surviving elements of the Pakistani 1st Armoured Division turned back in total disarray, retreating west across the border line under a heavy smoke screen.

Major Devraj Singh stepped out of his command bunker, lowering his binoculars as he surveyed the silent, smoke-wreathed battlefield. The desert air smelled heavily of burnt diesel, cordite, and scorched metal.

Beside him, Subedar Rathore wiped the sweat and black gunpowder residue from his forehead, looking over at his crew. Not a single Indian anti-tank gun had been destroyed; total Indian casualties for the three-hour battle stood at four wounded.

”They thought we would break under their armour, Major-sahib,” Rathore said, a quiet, fierce pride in his voice.

”They do not understand what they are fighting, Vikram,” Devraj replied softly, looking east toward the distant horizon where the vast heartland of India lay secure and peaceful under the setting sun. ”They think they are fighting a temporary army. They do not realise that behind this sand, a titan has woken up, and its shield is made of cold, unbreakable steel.”

South Block, New Delhi

As the last golden rays of the evening sun filtered through the high teak windows of South Block, Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta sat alone at his wide mahogany desk.

Before him rested three open documents: the military situation report from the Thar Desert confirming the total repulse of the Pakistani armoured offensive with zero loss of strategic territory; the newly signed executive order launching the emergency national teacher training academies for three hundred thousand educators; and a thick, bound copy of the Sanskrit primary textbook, its golden Devanagari title glowing in the soft twilight.

Shaktidas Sharma stepped quietly into the room, setting a final intelligence dispatch on the side table.

”The desert line has held perfectly, Ram,” Shaktidas said softly, his voice filled with deep relief. ”The enemy has lost nearly half an armoured regiment in the Thar sector, and their high command has withdrawn their mechanised units back to defensive bases in Sindh. In Kashmir, the spring thaws are opening the passes, and our Patiala units are advancing steadily toward Gilgit. And in the provinces... the first batch of forty thousand primary school canvas tents has been dispatched by rail today.”

Ram Prasad Gupta did not answer immediately. He stood up slowly, stepping over to the broad window overlooking the grand sandstone buildings of New Delhi. Outside, the night was beginning to settle over the capital, clear, cool, and brilliant with stars.

”We have defended the soil with iron, Shaktidas,” Ram said, his quiet voice echoing off the dark teak panelling, carrying an unbroken, monumental weight that seemed to fill the entire chamber. ”Now, we plant the seeds of mind and soul into that soil. When July 1st comes, millions of our children will step through those school tent doors. They will read, they will think, they will speak in the voice of their ancestors, and they will build a future that no empire, no foreign power, and no force on earth will ever dare to break again.”

Shaktidas looked at Ram Prasad Gupta for a long, quiet moment, bowing his head in profound, unspoken respect. Outside, the great clock tower of the Secretariat began to strike eight, its deep, metallic strokes ringing out across the sovereign capital of a titan rising to its full, majestic height.
