Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Inside his South Block office, Ram Prasad Gupta sat opposite B. N. Mullick, Director of the Intelligence Bureau. On the desk lay several thick intelligence dossiers bound in red tape, marked with the seal of the Samvardhan clandestine network.

”The intelligence integration in Burma must be executed with absolute precision, Mullick,” Ram instructed, tapping his finger against the file. ”The Samvardhan assets who were embedded among the Shan, Kachin, and Karen tribes over the past eight to nine years have done exceptional work. But now that Burma has formally acceded to the Republic, those covert networks must be systematically absorbed into the Intelligence Bureau.”

Mullick took rapid notes in a leather ledger. ”Understood, Prime Minister. What are the specific operational directives regarding the tribal sectors?”

”First,” Ram said, his tone razor-sharp. ”Maintain our contacts with the tribal elders through the same operational framework, embedded intelligence officers who actually bring tangible, material benefits to the local population: medical supplies, agricultural tools, clean water infrastructure, and educational materials. If the local tribes trust our embedded agents, no subversive, spear-artist, or foreign-backed insurgent element can ever gain a foothold in those hills without our immediate knowledge.”

”Second,” Ram continued, ”rotate the embedded personnel in a carefully phased manner. Many of these operatives have been living under deep cover in isolated, high-risk terrain for nearly a decade. Bring them back in batches for thorough debriefing, medical rest, psychological recalibration, and well-earned promotions. But replace them seamlessly with newly trained IB handlers to ensure zero lapse in intelligence continuity.”

”Third,” Ram emphasised, standing up from his chair. ”Archive every document, map, linguistic study, and operational report compiled by the Samvardhan network over these years. They have accumulated an unprecedented repository of knowledge regarding border topography, tribal customs, and trade routes. Ensure that not a single page of that operational intelligence is lost or mislaid. It is the intelligence backbone of our eastern frontier.”

”It will be executed exactly as ordered, Prime Minister,” Mullick replied, saluting crisply before departing.

High in the frozen, wind-swept Tibetan plateau, five hundred miles north of the Indian border, a quiet drama of deep-cover intelligence and geopolitics was reaching its climax.

Inside the ancient, white-walled courtyard of the Drepung Monastery near Lhasa, an Indian covert operative, living under the deep-cover identity of a Ladakhi Buddhist monk named Tenzin, moved quietly among the novice monks. For over three years, Tenzin had lived in the monastery, spinning prayer wheels, copying ancient manuscripts, and building deep trust among the senior monastic hierarchy.

On a freezing afternoon, a discreet summons arrived from the Potala Palace. It was not an official invitation from the Kashag, the conservative, faction-ridden Tibetan ruling council, but a private, secret audience granted directly by the fourteen-year-old 14th Dalai Lama himself, acting entirely on his own initiative.

Tenzin was guided up endless flights of dark, yak-butter-scented wooden stairs, deep into the private inner quarters of the Potala Palace. Sitting on a simple raised cushion near a copper brazier was the young Dalai Lama. Despite his youth, his eyes were sharp, intelligent, and filled with a sophisticated awareness of the world outside his isolated realm.

Dismissing his personal attendants with a subtle gesture, the young leader looked at the undercover Indian operative.

”You are not merely a pilgrim monk from Ladakh, Brother Tenzin,” the Dalai Lama said quietly, his voice calm and composed. ”My private sources within the monastic orders have confirmed that you carry the direct trust of the leadership in New Delhi. I wished to speak with you directly, without the Kashag, without the old ministers who whisper self-serving advice into my ears every morning. I am well aware of the geopolitical storm gathering around Tibet. Tell me of India’s true intentions.”

Tenzin bowed respectfully, removing his outer monastic shawl. When he spoke, his tone was completely candid, stripped of diplomatic ambiguity.

”Your Holiness,” Tenzin began smoothly. ”I will speak with absolute honesty, because Prime Minister Ram Prasad Gupta believes that true relations between India and Tibet must be built on total realism, not false comfort.”

The Dalai Lama nodded slowly, leaning forward. ”Speak freely.”

”The Chinese Civil War is reaching its final, brutal conclusion,” Tenzin explained. ”You must understand the stark reality of the forces across your eastern border. First, Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist Kuomintang. Even if they somehow manage to survive, which is militarily impossible at this stage, their policy toward Tibet remains total administrative absorption into China. They view Tibet as a Chinese province.”

”And the Communists?” the Dalai Lama asked, his dark eyes fixed on the operative.

”Mao Zedong’s Chinese Communist Party will win the civil war,” Tenzin stated plainly. ”They are militant, ideological atheists. They view traditional monastic culture, feudal landholdings, and religious hierarchy as societal poisons to be eradicated. Once they consolidate power in Beijing, the People’s Liberation Army will march into Tibet. There will be no religious freedom, no preservation of your ancient way of life, and zero political autonomy.”

The Dalai Lama remained quiet for a moment, his hands folded neatly in his lap. ”And what of an independent, sovereign Tibet? Can Tibet not stand as a free, neutral nation between India and China? What if we seek diplomatic recognition and military assistance from the Western powers, from the United States?”

Tenzin looked at the young leader with deep respect, but shook his head firmly.

”Your Holiness, I must be brutally honest: a fully independent, sovereign Tibet recognised by the international community is simply not possible,” Tenzin said without hesitation. ”Even if you were to send envoys to Washington or London, the United States will not send troops or make formal security commitments to defend a landlocked plateau in the heart of Asia. Western promises will be purely rhetorical. When the Chinese army moves, no foreign power across the Atlantic will fire a single shot to defend Lhasa.”

The Dalai Lama took a slow breath, absorbing the cold reality of the situation. ”Then what is India offering?”

”Prime Minister Gupta offers Tibet a realistic, protected, and honourable future,” Tenzin explained clearly. ”India seeks a stable, secure, and peaceful northern frontier. If Tibet signs an Instrument of Accession with the Republic of India, similar to the framework established with the State of Jammu and Kashmir, India will extend its sovereign military shield to guarantee and defend your northern borders against any foreign invasion.”

Tenzin leaned in slightly, his voice earnest. ”Under this accession, Tibet will retain complete internal autonomy, total freedom of religion, the preservation of all your monastic institutions, and complete cultural self-governance. India will handle defence, foreign affairs, and strategic communications, leaving the internal administration of Tibet entirely in your hands.”

He added gently: ”Prime Minister Gupta also asked me to convey a personal caution: beware the private interests within your own Kashag council. Many of your senior aristocrats and ministers are seeking only to protect their personal estates and trading monopolies, even if it means selling Tibet’s future to the highest bidder or dragging their feet until it is too late. Whatever path Tibet chooses, Your Holiness must make the decision yourself, guided by the survival and welfare of your people, not by the whispers of corrupt advisors.”

The young Dalai Lama sat in silent contemplation for a long time, listening to the mountain wind howling against the high stone windows of the Potala Palace.

”Your Prime Minister speaks with the harsh clarity of a true strategist, Brother Tenzin,” the Dalai Lama said softly, a faint, wise smile touching his lips. ”He does not offer comfortable lies. Tell Prime Minister Gupta that Tibet remembers her ancient spiritual debt to Bharat. When the shadows lengthen across these mountains, we will know where our true sanctuary lies.”

Far to the northwest, along the razor-thin, ice-crusted ridges of Gilgit-Baltistan, the war for the Republic’s survival raged on with relentless, unforgiving intensity.

At fourteen thousand feet, where the sub-zero temperatures froze weapons oil solid, and the wind howled like a gale, the Indian Army’s pre-spring offensive was grinding deep into the final strongholds of the enemy. The fighting was brutal, close-quarters, and unforgiving. Pakistani regular divisions, desperate to prevent Indian forces from securing the strategic junction of Gilgit, had dug heavily into frozen stone bunkers, raining heavy artillery and mortar fire onto the narrow mountain tracks.

Through a blinding snow blizzard, Major Jaswant Singh of the 1st Patiala Infantry adjusted his snow goggles, ducking behind a jagged, ice-covered boulder as heavy 75mm artillery shells detonated along the ridge line, hurling shards of frozen shale into the air.

”Bring up the heavy mortar section!” Jaswant roared into his radio transmitter over the thunder of the gale. ”The enemy is entrenched on Hill 13,500! We need air support from Srinagar the moment this blizzard clears!”

Beside him, Subedar Gurmukh Singh loaded a fresh magazine into his German-made StG 44 assault rifle, his beard crusted with ice and his breath blooming in thick white clouds.

”They are fighting for every inch of rock now, Major-sahib!” Gurmukh called out, pointing toward a reinforced stone bunker spewing heavy machine-gun fire down the narrow gorge. ”These aren’t irregular raiders anymore! These are entrenched regular battalions of the Frontier Force!”

”It doesn’t matter who they are!” Major Jaswant Singh shouted back, pulling a heavy grenade from his parka and signalling to his assault team. ”Prime Minister’s orders are absolute! Drive them out of Gilgit! Clear the passes before the spring thaw!”

With a fierce, thunderous war cry, ”Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal!”, the Indian infantry surged forward across the ice, their high-altitude gear and superior logistical backbone driving the tip of the Republic’s spear deep into the high mountains, forging the unbreakable perimeter of a sovereign nation.
