Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1920-22

Morning in Allahabad assembled itself slowly, as if the city needed time to remember its own shape. The first sounds were always practical: cart wheels dragging over packed earth, a vendor calling out the day’s vegetables, the dull clang of metal vessels being rinsed in courtyards. Somewhere farther off, a temple bell rang at steady intervals, not loudly, but with the persistence of habit. Smoke rose from cooking fires and hung low in the damp air before thinning into nothing.

Inside the Gupta household, the day had already begun.

Hari Gopal Gupta sat cross-legged in the courtyard, his back straight, his eyes lowered to a manuscript that had outlived the hands that first wrote it. His voice moved steadily through Sanskrit verses, each syllable deliberate, each pause controlled. It was not devotion alone that held him there; it was discipline, the kind that shaped a man over years until it became indistinguishable from his nature.

Near the doorway, Vidya Devi worked with quiet efficiency, kneading dough, tending to the fire, adjusting vessels without needing to look at them directly. The house ran on familiarity. Words were used only when required.

Lying on a low cot just inside, Ram Prasad Gupta woke without urgency. He did not spring into the day like his parents; he liked a lie-in.

He sat up, listening.

The Sanskrit was not something he fully understood yet, but it settled into him with a strange familiarity, not as language, but as pattern. It had rhythm, structure, repetition. It behaved like something that followed rules.

He drank the water his mother handed him, wiped his mouth, and turned instinctively toward the courtyard.

His father did not look up.

That, too, was part of the order of things.

The stories began in the evenings, though they were never announced as such. They emerged in the slow unwinding of the day, when the urgency of work gave way to the steadier rhythm of thought.

Ram learned to wait for them.

He would sit near his father, attentive without appearing so, his posture mirroring the stillness he saw in the man across from him. Children often fidgeted, lost focus, asked questions before answers had formed. Ram did not. He listened first.

Hari noticed this early.

One evening, as the sky dimmed into a deepening blue and the courtyard cooled just enough to make stillness bearable, he said, ”You listen carefully.”

Ram looked up. ”Yes, Babu ji.”

Hari studied him for a moment, measuring something that was not easily defined.

”Then listen properly,” he said. ”Because what I tell you is not written anywhere.”

Ram nodded, and so the story began, not as history, but as inheritance.

”We were not always from here,” Hari said.

Ram glanced around instinctively, as if the house itself might contradict him.

”Then where?” he asked.

”Bikaner.”

The word meant distance, nothing more.

”It is a hard land,” Hari continued. ”Little water. Little certainty. Scant rains. And sand as far as you can see. The kind of place that teaches you early what you can and cannot rely on.”

Ram frowned slightly. ”Then why live there at all?”

”Because people do not always choose where they begin,” Hari said. ”They learn how to survive where they are.”

He paused, then added: ”But our people did not depend on the land.”

Ram leaned forward slightly.

”We were traders,” Hari said. There was no pride in his tone, no embellishment, only fact.

”In a place where the land could fail you, trade offered something else. Movement, adaptation, and control, to a certain extent.” He tapped his fingers lightly against his knee as he spoke, as if marking the rhythm of his own thoughts.

”A farmer depends on rain. A trader depends on understanding.”

”Understanding what?” Ram asked.

”What people need,” Hari replied. ”And when.” That answer stayed with Ram longer than most.

The move from Bikaner to Agra came not from desperation, but from recognition.

”Opportunity,” Hari said, when Ram asked why they left.

The word itself required explanation.

”It means seeing what others do not,” he clarified. ”Or seeing it earlier.”

The opportunity, in this case, had come during the reign of the Mughal king Akbar.

”Agra was not just a city, as the seat of the Mughal empire”, Hari said. ”It was the centre of movement. Always expanding. Goods came in from different regions, and they went out again. Trade did not stop there; it passed through.”

He gestured outward, though the courtyard could not contain what he described.

”Caravans arrived with grain, spices, cloth, metals. Some came from nearby regions, some from farther than most people would ever travel. There was always demand. Always exchange. Grand construction projects demanding esoteric raw materials.”

”And we were part of that?” Ram asked.

”Yes.”

”How?”

Hari’s answer was precise. ”By not limiting ourselves.” He leaned forward slightly.

”This is important: never tie yourself to one trade. Markets change. Needs change. If you remain fixed, you break.”

Ram nodded slowly. He understood the idea, if not yet its full implications.

”They traded in crops during harvest seasons,” Hari continued. ”Stored food during lean periods. Spices, because they could travel long distances without spoiling. Oil, jaggery, dried goods. Construction material from Bikaner and other neighbouring cities. Limestone, sandstone, marble. Even carriages, when demand rose among the nobility.”

Ram’s eyes widened slightly. ”Carriages?”

”Yes,” Hari said. ”Because someone needed them.”

There was a logic to it that appealed deeply to the boy.

”You do not sell what you prefer,” Hari added. ”You sell what moves.”

Agra, in Hari’s telling, was not merely prosperous; it had an order to it.

”Rules existed,” he said. ”Taxes were predictable. Routes were maintained. Authority, whatever its nature, was stable.”

Ram listened closely.

”Stability allows planning,” Hari said. ”And planning allows growth.” The sentence lingered in Ram’s mind long after it was spoken.

But the story did not remain in that state. It never did.

”After Aurangzeb,” Hari said one evening, ”the empire did not fall at once. It weakened.”

Ram had begun to recognise this shift in tone. Prosperity gave way to caution. Certainty to ambiguity.

”What does that mean?” he asked.

”It means rules began to change,” Hari said. ”Not gradually. Not predictably. Without reason.” He let the words settle before continuing. ”Local governors began acting independently. Taxes were increased or altered without warning. Trade routes became less secure. What was safe one year could become dangerous the next. Rulers, and their rules, changing like seasons.”

Ram frowned. ”Then how did people plan?”

”They could not,” Hari said simply.

”And without planning?”

”Even the most careful trader becomes a gambler.”

That answer unsettled Ram more than anything else he had heard so far.

He did not like the idea of gambling, not because he understood it fully, but because it implied loss of control.

”So, what did our people do?” he asked.

Hari did not hesitate. ”They left.”

The simplicity of the answer made Ram pause.

”They sold what they could,” Hari continued. ”Converted goods into money. Took what was necessary. Left the rest behind.”

”No regret?” Ram asked.

Hari’s expression did not change.

”Regret is for those who stay too long,” he said.
