Chapter 852, Strange Creatures

Translator: Silavin

Su Bai was standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows looking outside, having just finished lunch and needing to rest for a bit.

“Shaman, how should this thing be used?”

Yu Ying had been studying the grater for quite some time. This was an Assistance Package that Su Bai had just opened from the System this morning.

It was a stainless steel grater from Earth, very obviously a kitchen implement.

“Hahahahaha.” Su Bai laughed heartily, turning his head to ask, “How have you still not worked it out?”

When he had opened this thing from the System, he had directly handed it to Yu Ying without directly telling her how to use it.

Instead he had let her research how to use it herself, which could also be considered teasing her a bit.

“Shaman, I can’t work it out. I don’t know what this thing is!” Yu Ying looked utterly pitiful.

She had tried all sorts of methods without seeing any results, such as moving it left and right, putting it in water, hitting things with it and so forth.

“This thing is called a grater. Bring me a peeled potato and I’ll demonstrate it for you.” Su Bai smiled.

This thing was everywhere on Earth, and was one of the essential items for every household.

When he had opened this thing from the System, he felt it wasn’t particularly useful. It was just that this thing would be more convenient than cutting with a knife.

He still hoped to open some useful Skills from the System. That way he could also enhance his own strength.

“Alright.” Yu Ying immediately turned and went to fetch one from the kitchen.

*Step step step…*

A few minutes later, Yu Ying came running out with a peeled potato, having specially washed it clean.

Seeing that she had also brought a basin, Su Bai nodded in satisfaction, thinking she had probably guessed it.

He took the washed and peeled potato and began demonstrating. He placed the grater in the basin, specially tilting it at an angle, leaving some space underneath.

“Shaman, do we put the potato on top?” Yu Ying asked, tilting her head. When she had heard the word ‘grater’, she roughly guessed it should turn the potato into shreds.

“En, hold the potato firmly with one hand, then rub it back and forth on the grater…”

*Scritch scritch scritch,,.*

Su Bai explained while demonstrating. As the sounds of the potato and grater continuously rang out, the originally whole potato began transforming into strand after strand of shreds.

The entire process took merely a short minute or two. This was much more convenient than cutting with a knife, and also much more uniform.

“How amazing! The potato has all turned into individual strands, and so quickly too.” Yu Ying was astonished.

She did not even know what had happened. It felt like it had finished in an instant.

When she saw Su Bai grating halfway through, she had originally wanted to have a try demonstrating, but unexpectedly before she could speak it had ended.

“This is the convenience of a grater. This is something you cannot do with a knife.” Su Bai smiled.

Of course when he said it couldn’t be done with a knife, that only applied to him and Yu Ying. On Earth there were plenty of talented people who could do this with just a knife.

“But Shaman, now that the potato has become like this, how should we make it into food?” Yu Ying fell into distress.

Previously potatoes had always been either boiled whole in water or fire-roasted. Turning into shreds like this was the first time.

“We can make it into Hot and Sour Shredded Potatoes. The taste is also very good.” This was the first thing that came to Su Bai’s mind.

“Hot and Sour Shredded Potatoes? Shaman, how should this be made?” Yu Ying swished her pink fox tail.

“Just add some chilli peppers and Ocean Lily Fruit. The entire taste will be different. You can try it during dinner tonight.” Su Bai smiled.

Truthfully, it had been some time since he’d eaten Hot and Sour Shredded Potatoes. He rather wanted to try some.

“Yes, I’ll try making it tonight.” Yu Ying agreed immediately.

*Flutter flutter…*

Just as her words fell, sounds of flapping wings rang out from outside the window.

“What’s happening?” Su Bai immediately looked outside the window, but still couldn’t find anything.

“Shaman, it should be the Land Birds preparing to fly back to higher ground.” Yu Ying guessed.

Then, a great flock of Land Birds began flying out from the forest.

The sound of flapping wings grew from distant to near. The sky immediately filled with a mass of densely dark birds.

They didn’t make any calls at all, just continuously beat their small wings.

Su Bai looked up at these Land Birds and asked, “If I’m not mistaken, these birds all live on land, correct?”

Based on his understanding of the primitive Tribes’ naming habits, these two words ‘Land Birds’ very clearly explained everything.

“Yes, Shaman. Because their wings are extremely short, they have no way to keep flying to very high places or relatively distant places to search for food, so they can only survive on land…”

Yu Ying curiously came to the window, looking at those birds in the sky, and continued, “However their running speed is absolutely first-rate.”

Yu Ying was a person of this Primitive Tribe. She had heard this knowledge since childhood.

“I see. I thought it was some other situation.”

Su Bai nodded thoughtfully and continued asking, “Since their wings are short and they have no way to fly to high or distant places to find food, then why are they now beginning a large-scale migration?”

This scene was still very familiar. Although he didn’t recognise these birds, this type of behaviour was called migration.

“Shaman, what is migration? I only know that the rainy season is about to arrive. The places they rely on for survival will be flooded, so they can only fly away.”

Yu Ying looked at that flock of birds and continued, “However, this flight away will be their life’s end.”

Because the Land Birds’ wings were extremely short, wanting to fly to high ground to avoid the flood brought by the rainy season, they must use all their strength to fly.

But this would also cause them to become utterly exhausted and would also cause their wings to break. In short, it was a painful price.

“Since flying away is death and staying there is also death, why bother with this arduous journey?” Su Bai continued asking.

He was naturally clueless about some matters of the Primitive Era. He had to ask the young girl beside him more.

“My Father told me before that these Land Birds all fly away to lay eggs, and when the time comes the young birds will all fly back.” Yu Ying explained.

“There are such strange creatures? But won’t the young birds also become utterly exhausted when flying back?” Su Bai asked curiously.

“Father said that newly born Land Birds have extremely wide wings. It’s only after flying back to their original place that they become small.” Yu Ying tried hard to recall.

“I see. What interesting creatures.” Su Bai smiled as he looked up at the sky.

At this moment, the flock of Land Birds was like a great net, instantly encompassing the entire sky.

“Shaman, are these birds tasty?” Yu Ying suddenly said.

“Hmmm? It seems we should give them a try.” The corners of Su Bai’s mouth couldn’t help but lift.
