Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1012: Chapter 1012: The Staff Chief Who Descended from the Sky

”I didn’t make it!” Ruan Fangfang hung her bag on the coat rack and sat down next to Ma Mei, ”That An Hao is really something else. She’s young but already married. Her husband used to be a battalion staff officer in the Northern Military Region! Who would dare mess with that status?”

”Really? That impressive? The little girl has quite the tactics, huh! Her husband must not be young if he has made it to battalion staff officer, right?” Ma Mei speculated.

”Who knows!”

As the two of them were talking, they heard the door, and Hen Zhiyuan, Ma Mei’s husband, came in, ”Who are you gossiping about so loudly? I could hear you from the doorstep!”

”Uncle, you’re back!” Ruan Fangfang hastily stood up and helped Hen Zhiyuan take off his military coat, hanging it on the coat rack.

”Look at that brown-nosing!” Ma Mei couldn’t stand it anymore, ”You little minx only have eyes for your uncle, never for me!”

”Why don’t you try getting her a position at the affiliated hospital?” Hen Zhiyuan glanced at his wife, ”My niece is close to me, look how much you resent that.”

”Of course, I’m also grateful to my aunt,” Ruan Fangfang said with a grin and went back to stand next to Ma Mei to give her a shoulder rub.

Her mother had died early, and it was Ma Mei and Hen Zhiyuan who had raised her.

Even though her aunt and uncle were good to her, Ruan Fangfang always felt like she was living under someone else’s roof.

So, she took every opportunity to show her best side and curry favor with them to secure a better future for herself.

”Speaking of the hospital, how have you been doing recently?” Hen Zhiyuan sat on the sofa, crossed his legs, and settled into a comfortable position.

”Not good. There’s a student who met An Hao, and as soon as she got in, she stole all the limelight! The dean is even planning to give her the cardiothoracic surgery spot. Where will I go next year?” Ruan Shuangshuang said unhappily.

”Zhiyuan, can’t you talk to our dean during the New Year and sort this out?” Ma Mei tentatively asked.

”We’ll see. If it really doesn’t work out, later on, I’ll look into the military region’s general hospital. An old comrade of mine is there, might be easier to talk to than here,” Hen Zhiyuan said.

Ruan Shuangshuang had already done her research, and in terms of benefits, the affiliated hospital was better.

The main thing was having her aunt around, which made life easier.

”Uncle!” Ruan Fangfang hurriedly brewed tea for him and brought it over, ”Let’s stick with the affiliated hospital, please! I’m begging you, do something about it!”

Hen Zhiyuan took a sip of the tea and frowned, ”Let’s talk about your matter later! There’s going to be some movement in the troops soon, preparing to promote some deputies. The former battalion commander was promoted to brigade commander, and after the transfer orders come down in a while, he’ll leave. I must be promoted to battalion commander this time!”

”That battalion commander position is definitely yours!” Ma Mei, thinking of her husband’s promotion to battalion commander, suddenly felt a surge of pride.

He had been in a deputy position for so many years; if he didn’t get promoted now, it’d be time to change his career.

”How can you be so sure?” Hen Zhiyuan glared at Ma Mei, ”If you don’t understand, don’t spout nonsense.”

”Isn’t that what you said?” Ma Mei retorted while munching on sunflower seeds, ”Just the other day you were saying that when it comes time for the next round of promotions, you were certain to be one! Definitely the position of battalion commander! So what’s changed now?”

”Right!” Hen Zhiyuan’s heart was filled with irritation as he brought up the situation, ”A staff officer who had left the Northern Military Region applied to come back. It’s said he’s to land in our army group, specifically in our brigade, in our battalion! Isn’t this asking for trouble?”

”Does that affect you? Uncle, you’re the deputy battalion commander! Besides, he’s being parachuted in, he doesn’t have any roots here. What are you afraid of him for?” Ruan Fangfang thought Hen Zhiyuan’s worries were completely unnecessary.
