Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 98: Chapter 98 — The First Night

The attack came a few hours past midnight, the alarm raised by Kess, whose watch rotation had caught the first faint signs of movement at the treeline before anything closed distance enough for the others to notice.

”Contact! Multiple directions!” she called, already on her feet, and the camp came alive around Arlen in the same instant he woke, sword in hand before his mind had fully caught up with his body.

”They’re circling,” Ilyana called, her voice cutting through the darkness with clipped, urgent precision. ”Not charging directly. Testing the perimeter.”

The fires had been kept deliberately low for the night’s rest, and Arlen found the darkness itself working against them in ways the daylight fighting hadn’t — shapes visible only in fragments at the edge of the firelight, the twisted, blurring quality of the corrupted creatures considerably harder to track when half-obscured by shadow.

”Light!” Ilyana called. ”Osric, now!”

Osric’s hands moved through a quick, practiced casting, and a soft, even glow spread outward from a small conjured orb hovering above the camp’s center, pushing back enough of the darkness that the treeline resolved into something navigable rather than guesswork. Rurik was already at the perimeter’s edge, his beastkin senses picking out movement the rest of the party could only guess at in the gloom.

”Eight, maybe ten, spread wide,” Rurik called, his low voice carrying easily across the camp. ”Not committing to a direct charge yet. Testing gaps.”

”Smart,” Kess muttered, already positioning near the eastern edge. ”Too smart for something that’s supposed to be mindless corruption.”

The creatures struck the moment the party’s attention seemed to waver, three of them surging from the darkness simultaneously at three separate points along the perimeter, and Arlen understood, meeting the nearest one with a desperate, half-formed Edgeline Strike, exactly what Selene had meant the previous day about coordination.

”They’re learning our formation,” Osric called, weaving a defensive ward around Maren’s position even as he fought to track the shifting attacks. ”Adjusting between each wave.”

The fight sprawled through the camp in fragmented, overlapping skirmishes, the darkness making coordination considerably harder than the day’s more open engagements, and Arlen found himself, working alongside Halvard to hold their section of the perimeter, genuinely grateful for the accumulated months of disciplined training that let his body respond even when his conscious mind struggled to properly track the chaos.

A creature broke through near the camp’s northern edge, and Arlen heard, more than saw, the sharp cry that followed — Grennig, caught by a strike he hadn’t properly guarded against in the confused dark, staggering back with a wound along his side that immediately drew Aria’s urgent attention.

”Grennig’s hit!” Doran called. ”Aria’s got him, but we need this section held!”

Arlen and Halvard moved to cover the gap Grennig’s injury had opened, and Arlen found the fighting here considerably more desperate than anything the daylight swarms had demanded — no clean formation to rely on, simply raw, adaptive combat against an enemy that seemed to genuinely learn from every failed attack.

”They’re not just testing anymore,” Halvard called, driving his blade through one creature’s exposed flank only to find two more pressing immediately into the gap it left. ”They’ve found where we’re weakest.”

Garrick moved through the chaos with the same unhurried, deliberate authority he brought to everything, his blade finding decisive, economical strikes wherever the fighting grew most desperate, and Arlen caught, in fragments between his own engagements, his first real glimpse of exactly what kind of controlled competence had earned the Guild Master his position in the first place.

”Hold the center!” Garrick called. ”Don’t let them split us further!”

The fighting continued for what felt, to Arlen, like considerably longer than the actual span of the attack, his body running on pure trained instinct as the darkness and chaos made careful, deliberate strategy increasingly difficult to maintain. He fought with sword and Aura alone, Edgeline Strike finding its mark again and again, Enduring Vitality carrying him through the accumulating fatigue as the confused, close-quarters fighting dragged on.

The attack finally broke off as the sky began, almost imperceptibly, to lighten toward dawn, the remaining creatures retreating into the darkness with the same unnerving, deliberate coordination that had characterized their entire assault.

”Report,” Ilyana called, her voice carrying the ragged edge of genuine exhaustion despite her usual composed authority. ”Injuries?”

”Grennig’s stable,” Aria called back. ”Deep wound, but clean. He’ll need proper rest before he’s fit for further combat, though.”

”Anyone else?”

A round of minor injuries reported in — cuts, bruises, the accumulated toll of hours spent fighting in confused darkness — but nothing else approaching Grennig’s more serious wound, and Arlen found himself, once the immediate danger passed, genuinely relieved despite the night’s evident cost.

Maren, who had spent the entire attack sheltered behind Osric’s careful wardwork, emerged from her protected position with an expression Arlen hadn’t seen from her before — something closer to genuine unease than her usual measured composure.

”This confirms something I’d hoped wasn’t true,” she said quietly, once the camp had settled into the exhausted aftermath of the attack. ”The corruption isn’t simply producing guardians anymore. It’s adapting. Learning from each engagement, refining its approach.”

”Is that possible?” Doran asked. ”For something like this?”

”Apparently.” Maren’s expression carried genuine concern beneath its careful composure. ”Which means the epicenter itself, whatever’s actually generating all this, may prove considerably more dangerous than even Millbrook’s original threat.”

Garrick, moving through the camp to check on the wounded personally, paused beside Arlen once his rounds concluded, his weathered face carrying a gravity Arlen hadn’t seen from him even during the previous day’s difficult fighting.

”You held that gap well,” he said. ”Good instincts, and better discipline than most adventurers manage in a fight that confused.”

”Training helped more than instinct, honestly,” Arlen admitted.

”Sometimes that’s the whole point of training.” Garrick studied him a long moment. ”Rest while you can. I suspect tonight was only a preview of what’s still waiting for us.”

Arlen wrote briefly in his journal once the camp had properly settled, his hands still faintly unsteady from the night’s accumulated adrenaline.

Attacked in the dark, hours past midnight. Kess caught it first — good thing too, given how much harder this fight would have gone if it caught us fully unaware. Considerably worse than yesterday’s swarms — not mindless aggression, but genuine, adaptive coordination, testing our formation and finding the gaps. Grennig’s wounded, stable but serious. Everyone else carries smaller wounds.

Osric’s light and Rurik’s senses carried us through the worst of the darkness. Good reminder that this expedition works because everyone brings something distinct to it, not because any single person’s carrying the rest.

Maren says the corruption is learning. I don’t fully understand what that means for whatever waits at the actual epicenter, but I don’t think any of us are comfortable with the implication.

Dawn’s coming. I don’t think any of us will properly rest before we’re moving again.

He closed the journal, the camp settling into a tense, exhausted quiet around him, and found himself, despite the accumulated fear the night had stirred, still steady enough to recognize the shape of what tomorrow would likely demand — more danger, more cost, and a growing, unmistakable sense that whatever waited at this crisis’s true heart would test everything he’d spent a year and more carefully building toward.
