Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 78: Chapter 78 — Closer to the Fire

The final day of survey work carried them back toward the disputed territory’s edge, confirming the last details needed for their report before the return journey properly began, and Arlen found himself, working alongside Fennis through what had become an easy, wordless rhythm, genuinely reluctant to see the assignment’s practical purpose conclude.

”That’s everything,” Fennis said, closing her notebook as evening settled over their final stretch of surveyed ground. ”Report’s solid. Coalition should be satisfied.”

”Feels strange, finishing,” Arlen admitted. ”Like there should be more to it.”

”There’s still the walk back,” Fennis said, a faint smile touching her expression. ”Two more days, at least, before we’re properly done.”

They made camp that evening in a clearing considerably more sheltered than their previous sites, a natural hollow bordered by old, moss-covered stone that Fennis identified as the remnant of some long-collapsed structure, weathered past any recognizable purpose.

”Old herder’s shelter, maybe,” she said, running a hand along the worn stone. ”Or something older. Hard to say without proper study.”

”Eldrin would have opinions.”

”Eldrin has opinions about everything.” Fennis’s smile widened slightly. ”I mean that fondly. Man’s genuinely fascinated by the world in a way most people lose somewhere along the way.”

Arlen prepared their meal that evening with particular care, using the last of the fresh boar meat alongside wild herbs they’d gathered during the day’s final stretch, and found the resulting dish carrying a satisfaction that went beyond simple hunger — a fitting close, somehow, to a week that had given him considerably more than he’d expected when Reya first mentioned the contract.

”Best meal of the whole trip,” Fennis said, working through her portion with evident appreciation. ”You’ve been saving something for the last night, haven’t you.”

”Maybe a little,” Arlen admitted. ”Felt like it deserved proper effort.”

They ate slowly, the conversation drifting easily between comfortable silence and quiet reflection, and Arlen found himself, watching Fennis in the gentle firelight, aware of how thoroughly this week had reshaped his understanding of her — no longer simply Reya’s quiet, capable companion, but someone he’d come to genuinely know, layer by careful layer, across days of shared trust.

”Can I tell you something I haven’t told many people?” Fennis said, once they’d finished eating, her usual reserve softened by the accumulated ease of the past week.

”Of course.”

”I used to think I’d stay in my family’s village forever. Tracking game, same as my parents, same as their parents before them. It was a good life. Simple, in the way good things sometimes are.” She stared into the fire, something distant in her expression. ”Then I turned sixteen, and a guild adventurer passed through needing a local guide for a survey job, and I spent two weeks showing her terrain I’d known my whole life like it was suddenly new, just because I was seeing it through someone else’s eyes.”

”What changed?”

”I realized how much I’d been missing, without even knowing to miss it. That the world I thought was everything was actually just the corner I happened to be born into.” She glanced at him, something vulnerable beneath her usual steady composure. ”I think that’s part of why this week’s mattered so much to me. You remind me of that feeling. Like there’s always another corner worth seeing, if you’re willing to actually go looking.”

Arlen felt something shift in his chest at that, the honest vulnerability of her words settling into him with a weight he hadn’t quite expected. ”I think that’s the truest thing anyone’s said to me in a long time.”

”Yeah?”

”Yeah.” He held her gaze across the fire, the space between them feeling smaller now than it had a moment ago, charged with something neither of them had yet named aloud. ”I’ve spent my whole life chasing exactly that feeling. Finding people who actually understand it, rather than just tolerating it, that’s rarer than I think either of us expected going into this contract.”

Fennis was quiet for a long moment, the fire crackling softly between them, her expression carrying an openness Arlen hadn’t seen from her before — not the careful, professional directness she usually offered, but something rawer, more genuinely present.

”I wasn’t expecting this week to feel like this,” she said finally, quiet and honest. ”Wasn’t looking for it. But I’m not sorry it happened this way.”

”Neither am I,” Arlen said, and found the words carried more weight than their simplicity suggested.

They sat together in the comfortable, charged silence that followed, neither rushing to fill it with easy conversation, both simply present in the quiet, firelit intimacy of the moment. Arlen found himself studying the particular way the firelight caught in her eyes, the small, genuine smile that had replaced her usual measured reserve, and understood, with a clarity that felt both sudden and entirely inevitable, exactly how much this week had actually come to mean to him.

”Fennis,” he said quietly.

”Yeah?”

He didn’t have a fully formed thought to follow the word, only the honest, present weight of the moment itself — the fire, the quiet clearing, the accumulated trust of a week spent genuinely, mutually seeing each other clearly.

”I’m glad Reya sent me on this contract,” he said finally, the words carrying more than their surface simplicity.

Fennis’s smile deepened, something warm and unguarded settling into her expression. ”Me too.”

The space between them had narrowed further without either quite marking the moment it happened, the comfortable distance of careful professional partners giving way to something considerably closer, considerably more charged. Arlen found his heart beating a little faster, not with the adrenaline of danger, but with the particular, vulnerable anticipation of a threshold he understood, clearly now, that they were both standing at the edge of together.

”We don’t have to decide anything tonight,” Fennis said softly, though her own gaze hadn’t moved from his. ”Just wanted you to know. Whatever this is. I’m not imagining it.”

”You’re not,” Arlen confirmed, quiet and certain.

Neither of them moved to close the remaining distance, not yet, both content to simply hold the moment a while longer — the fire’s warmth, the honest vulnerability they’d each offered the other, the quiet, mutual understanding that whatever came next, it would arrive on its own unhurried terms rather than anything forced or assumed.

Arlen wrote nothing in his journal that night, the moment feeling too immediate, too present, to properly translate into careful documentation. He simply sat with Fennis by the dying fire a while longer, the comfortable silence between them carrying more honest connection than words could have managed, and understood, with a settled, grateful clarity, that tomorrow — whatever it brought — would arrive exactly the way this entire week had unfolded: patiently, genuinely, and entirely on its own honest terms.
