Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 81: Chapter 81 — Back to the Grind

Life at Greyhaven settled back into its familiar rhythm quickly, the way it always seemed to after any significant absence, and Arlen found himself, within a week of his return from the northern survey, folded once more into the steady, comfortable cadence of ordinary guild life — training with Garrett, taking on modest quest work, sharing meals with Cobb and Sil at their usual table.

”You’ve been different since you got back,” Cobb observed one evening, studying him over a shared bowl of stew. ”Quieter, in a good way. Settled, maybe.”

”Long trip,” Arlen said. ”Ashford’s Crossing, then the northern survey right after. Gives a person plenty to think about.”

”Fair enough.” Cobb didn’t press further, though Sil’s quiet, knowing glance across the table suggested he’d drawn his own conclusions about at least part of what had changed.

Garrett noticed too, though he approached the observation with his usual blunt practicality rather than any particular curiosity about the cause. ”You’re moving with more confidence,” he said, watching Arlen work through a familiar training sequence during their first session back. ”Not just technically. Something’s settled in you that wasn’t quite settled before.”

”Good travel does that, I think.”

”Apparently.” Garrett didn’t press further either, simply nodding and resuming their session with the same disciplined focus he always brought to their work.

Arlen found himself, over the following weeks, genuinely grateful for the steady, undemanding rhythm of ordinary guild life after the emotional weight of everything the past two months had carried — Ashford’s Crossing’s overwhelming scale, the bandits and razor-boars along the trade road, the honest, complicated intimacy he’d shared with Fennis and the mature clarity with which they’d both let it settle into something whole rather than unresolved.

He took on a string of modest quests during this stretch, nothing approaching the scale of the timber camp or his solo exploration work, content for a while simply to move through familiar terrain with familiar, manageable risk — herb gathering, minor pest subjugation, the occasional escort contract that kept him close to Greyhaven rather than venturing far afield.

”You’re taking it easy,” Mina observed, processing one such modest quest at the registration counter. ”Not a complaint, just an observation. You’ve earned some quieter work, after everything you’ve been through these past months.”

”Feels good, honestly,” Arlen admitted. ”I think I needed the reminder that not every quest has to test my limits.”

”Wisdom, that. Plenty of adventurers never learn it, chase escalating danger until it finally catches up with them.” Mina counted out his modest reward. ”Enjoy the quiet stretch while it lasts.”

He spent his evenings during this period continuing his careful documentation work for Eldrin’s culinary archive, cataloguing the various creatures he’d encountered across his recent travels with the same methodical attention he brought to everything — the razor-boar’s meat, gamey but not unpleasant once properly prepared; the disputed territory’s larger boar variety, considerably richer than its ordinary cousin.

”Your contributions have become something of a fixture,” Eldrin told him, reviewing the latest entries with evident satisfaction. ”The archive’s seen more genuine use these past months than in the several years before you started contributing. Other adventurers have begun referencing your entries directly when planning their own expeditions.”

”I didn’t realize that.”

”You should be proud of it. Practical knowledge, properly shared, matters more than people often credit.” Eldrin set the notes carefully aside. ”Speaking of which — I haven’t forgotten my promise about the valley expedition. I’m still working to secure proper guild resources for it, though I confess the process moves slower than I’d like.”

”No rush,” Arlen said. ”I trust you’re pursuing it properly.”

He found himself, during this quieter stretch, also spending more deliberate time simply enjoying Greyhaven itself — the guild tavern’s familiar warmth, evenings spent with Cobb and Sil trading easy conversation, occasional visits with Reya’s party where Fennis’s presence carried none of the awkwardness he might once have feared, replaced instead by the same easy, genuine friendship that had defined their partnership before the northern survey had briefly deepened it into something else.

”You two seem comfortable,” Dorn observed one evening, noticing the easy rapport between Arlen and Fennis without any particular suspicion behind the comment.

”We work well together,” Fennis said simply, and the answer, though incomplete, carried no dishonesty in it either — simply the careful, mutual discretion they’d both agreed suited them best.

Arlen found genuine comfort in that particular friendship’s steady continuation, grateful that whatever had passed between them during the survey hadn’t cost either of them the easier, more ordinary connection they’d built across months of shared guild work.

He wrote in his journal one evening, several weeks into this quieter stretch, the entry carrying the same settled, reflective quality that had characterized most of his significant reflections these past months.

Good to be back in ordinary rhythm for a while. Training with Garrett, modest quests, evenings with friends who’ve become something close to family. I think I needed this stretch of quiet after everything the past two months demanded — Ashford’s Crossing, the bandits, the razor-boars, Fennis.

I keep thinking about what Garrett said, about something having settled in me that wasn’t settled before. I think he’s right, though I couldn’t have properly named what it was until I sat with it a while. I think I finally understand, in a way I only partially grasped before, that growth doesn’t always mean pushing constantly toward the next challenge. Sometimes it means simply living well with what you’ve already built, before reaching for whatever comes next.

Eldrin’s still working on the valley expedition. Whenever it finally comes together, I’ll be ready. For now, though, I’m content with this — ordinary days, good company, the steady, unhurried work of simply being exactly where I am.

He closed the journal, the guild hall’s familiar evening warmth settling comfortably around him, and found himself, for the first time in longer than he could easily remember, genuinely at peace with the ordinary rhythm of his own life — not restless for the next horizon, not anxious about the careful secrets he still carried, simply grateful, in this quiet stretch, for everything this remarkable second life had already given him.
