Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 65: Chapter 65 — What the Storm Left Behind

Halvard’s recovery gave Arlen the better part of two weeks with nothing pressing on his schedule beyond Garrett’s regular training sessions, and he found himself, once again, turning that unclaimed time toward the deliberate, careful pursuit he’d promised himself he’d continue.

The timber camp fight had taught him something he hadn’t fully appreciated before — that his current abilities, however varied, still left him slower than he needed to be in a fight that demanded rapid repositioning. Enduring Vitality gave him stamina to sustain a fight. Ember Touch gave him something to hit with. Hawk’s Eye let him see danger coming. But nothing in his current toolkit actually let him move faster than his ordinary trained speed allowed, and he’d felt that gap acutely, scrambling to avoid the treant’s crushing blows on instinct and training alone.

He spent several days researching in the guild library, cross-referencing what creatures might plausibly grant something suited to speed, before settling on a lead worth pursuing properly — reports of a small population of storm-hawks nesting along a ridge two days’ travel northeast, birds the bestiary described as capable of diving with a speed that occasionally left a visible, crackling afterimage in the air behind them.

He set out alone once Garrett cleared a break in their training schedule, reaching the ridge after a day and a half of steady travel, and spent the better part of an afternoon watching the birds from a careful distance before finally managing a clean shot with his bow during one of their characteristic high dives.

He made camp that evening at the ridge’s base, preparing the bird with his usual careful attention — the meat leaner even than the sky-eyed hawk had been, with a faint, almost metallic tang that lingered pleasantly on the tongue.

Storm-Hawk, he wrote, working through the cataloguing process while the meat cooked. Leaner than the sky-eyed variety, sharper flavor, faint metallic quality that’s not unpleasant. Rank 2, nests along exposed ridgelines, apparently dives with enough speed to generate visible static discharge.

He ate slowly, the flavor settling into something he found himself genuinely enjoying despite its unusual character, and the warmth arrived partway through his meal with the same familiar, patient certainty he’d come to recognize across four previous awakenings.

This time, the sensation gathered differently — not in his chest or behind his eyes, but through his limbs entirely, a crackling, restless energy that made his fingers twitch involuntarily before it finally settled into place.

A name surfaced in his mind, certain and whole.

Storm Step.

He sat with the sensation a long moment, testing the edges of understanding that came bundled with the name — a felt sense of barely restrained speed, energy gathered and ready to discharge in a single, explosive burst of movement.

He tested it cautiously, rising from his seat by the fire and drawing on the ability with deliberate care. The world blurred at the edges for one disorienting instant, and he found himself, impossibly, several yards from where he’d started, a faint crackle of static fading from around his boots.

He nearly lost his footing entirely, the sudden displacement leaving his balance scrambling to catch up with where his body had actually gone, and he stood there a moment, breathing hard, genuine astonishment settling in alongside the physical strain.

Fifth ability, he wrote, once he’d caught his breath enough to properly document the experience. Storm Step — short-range burst of speed, near-instantaneous based on my one test. Costs real effort to control, and I nearly overbalanced entirely on first use. Needs careful practice before I’d trust it in actual combat.

He spent the remainder of the evening testing it further, cautiously, in a wide clearing well clear of anything he might collide with, gradually learning to anchor his balance properly through the sudden burst of movement rather than simply letting it carry him unprepared.

He thought, turning the new ability over with careful, deliberate attention, of exactly how he might integrate it going forward without adding yet another separate secret to carefully manage. Ember Touch had folded neatly into an elemental-flavored Aura technique, per Wren and Cass’s own ready assumption. Storm Step, he suspected, could work the same way — Aura-enhanced speed wasn’t an unusual concept at all, the guild texts he’d studied describing exactly that kind of application as one of Aura’s more common combat uses.

This one might integrate even more naturally than Ember Touch did, he wrote, working through the logic carefully. Aura users channeling speed into their movement is ordinary enough that nobody would think twice about it, provided I introduce it gradually rather than displaying something dramatically faster than my trained level should support. I’ll need to practice controlling the burst properly with Garrett’s guidance, folding it into legitimate technique the same way Ember Touch became a ”signature elemental strike.”

He thought, too, of the deeper implication underlying the pattern he’d now confirmed across five separate abilities — that whatever the true source of his power, it seemed to keep offering him exactly what his growing experience revealed he lacked. Ember Touch had arrived after Millbrook taught him the value of raw offensive power beyond simple technique. Storm Step had arrived after the timber camp fight exposed his need for genuine speed.

Coincidence, maybe, he wrote, turning the thought over with careful skepticism. Or maybe I’m simply noticing gaps in my own capability more clearly now, and seeking out creatures that address them deliberately, rather than the power itself somehow responding to what I need. I don’t fully understand the mechanism even now, five abilities in. I suspect I may never fully understand it.

What I do understand is this: I have a genuine burst of speed now, something I lacked badly at the timber camp, and I intend to practice it properly before I ever need to rely on it in a fight that matters as much as that one did.

He banked the fire carefully and settled in for the night, his body pleasantly worn from the day’s testing, his mind already turning toward how he might introduce Storm Step to Garrett in a way that continued building the same careful, plausible foundation he’d maintained since his very first ability.

Five abilities now, he thought, staring up at a sky considerably clearer than the one he’d slept beneath at the timber camp. Enduring Vitality, Water Affinity, Ember Touch, Hawk’s Eye, Storm Step. Each one arriving exactly when patient, deliberate pursuit brought me to the right creature, the right meal, the right quiet evening alone to test what emerged.

I don’t know how many more there are to find. I only know I intend to keep looking, carefully and deliberately, for as long as this strange, remarkable gift keeps offering me new ground to grow into.

He closed the journal, the fire’s glow settling low against the darkness, and slept deeply that night, already looking forward to the careful work of folding Storm Step into his training the way he’d folded everything else — patiently, deliberately, one quiet step at a time.
