Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 70: Chapter 70 — What Waits Beyond

Greyhaven’s western gate came into view on the eighteenth day, two days later than Arlen had originally estimated even accounting for his detour, and he found himself, standing at the edge of the familiar tree line, oddly reluctant to close the final distance despite weeks of genuine exhaustion pressing at every part of him.

Almost strange, missing something before you’ve even left it, he thought, glancing back once toward the northern horizon where the unmarked valley still waited, unexplored beyond what little he’d managed to document. I’ll come back. Not yet. But I’ll come back.

Mina’s face at the registration counter shifted from routine professionalism to open relief the moment she recognized him. ”Arlen. You’re four days past your estimated return. Lyra was starting to ask questions.”

”Found more than I expected,” he said. ”Worth the extra time, I think, once you see what I brought back.”

He spent the following hour walking Mina and, once summoned, Lyra herself through his careful documentation — the mountain pass survey, complete with terrain notes suitable for the commissioning merchants’ immediate use, and beyond it, the unmarked valley, its stunted trees, its strange mineral-touched soil, and the genuinely unknown predator species he’d tracked, studied, and finally engaged.

”This is significant,” Lyra said, reviewing his notes with a focus considerably sharper than her usual composed evaluation. ”A previously undocumented species, properly observed and described before engagement rather than simply killed on sight. That’s exactly the kind of exploration work the guild values most, and rarely receives with this much care behind it.”

”I tried to be thorough.”

”You succeeded.” Lyra set the notes down, studying him with something that carried genuine, unguarded respect. ”This earns proper Explorer merit credit, Arlen. Possibly enough to warrant a formal title, depending on how the cartography archive classifies the discovery once Eldrin’s reviewed it properly.”

Arlen felt a quiet, genuine satisfaction settle into him at that, distinct from the careful, calculated pride he usually managed around his hidden abilities — this recognition, at least, belonged entirely to the parts of himself he’d never needed to hide.

He sought out Eldrin the following day, finding the professor genuinely delighted by the detailed account of the valley predator, peppering him with careful questions about behavior, territory, and the unusual luminescent quality of its eyes.

”This deserves proper study,” Eldrin said, reviewing Arlen’s notes with visible excitement. ”A genuinely new species, this close to the Ashen Frontier’s borders. I’d like to organize a proper follow-up expedition eventually, once resources allow. Would you be willing to guide it, given you’re the only person who’s actually seen the creature firsthand?”

”I’d like that,” Arlen said, and meant it, already turning over the possibility with quiet anticipation.

He found his friends that evening, gathered at their usual table, and endured what felt like an hour of genuine, warm interrogation about every detail of his extended absence — Cobb demanding to know about the unknown predator with the enthusiasm of someone hoping for a dramatic story, Sil quietly impressed by the careful thoroughness of his documentation, Reya offering her usual sharp, practical assessment of the risks he’d taken pushing further than originally planned.

”Eighteen days alone in increasingly unmapped territory,” Reya said, shaking her head with something between admiration and genuine concern. ”That’s either impressively disciplined or recklessly ambitious. Possibly both.”

”Both, probably,” Arlen admitted, and found himself laughing along with the rest of them, the easy warmth of the table settling around him with a comfort he’d genuinely missed during his long weeks alone.

Ysolde received the details of his journey with particular interest once he mentioned the various creatures he’d catalogued along the way, and Arlen found himself, over the following days, working through proper documentation for the guild’s culinary archive alongside his more formal exploration reports — the Glowmark Burrower’s unusual sweetness, the valley-wolf’s sharp, bitter meat that had needed careful seasoning to properly balance.

”You’ve contributed more to that archive in the past few months than most adventurers manage in years,” Eldrin told him, reviewing the growing collection of entries with genuine appreciation. ”I suspect, given time, you might build something of a reputation around exactly this kind of work — not just combat, but genuine documentation of the world’s overlooked corners.”

Arlen turned the observation over carefully, recognizing in it something close to the exact identity he’d been quietly building toward since his very first tentative steps past the north trail marker, years — though it felt, once again, like a different lifetime — earlier.

He returned to Garrett’s training yard the following week, his body properly recovered from the journey’s accumulated exhaustion, and found his instructor studying him with the same critical, evaluating attention he’d shown since their very first session.

”You’ve changed since the trip,” Garrett observed, watching Arlen move through a familiar warm-up sequence with noticeably improved fluidity. ”Not just stronger. Steadier. More settled into whatever you actually are, rather than still working to become it.”

”Feels that way,” Arlen admitted. ”Something about being out there alone, testing myself against genuinely unknown terrain, without anyone else’s safety to weigh against every decision. I think I needed that.”

”Good. That kind of confidence, properly earned, serves you better than anything I can teach directly.” Garrett gestured for him to begin their session properly. ”Storm Step’s ready for real combat use now, I take it, given how you’re carrying yourself.”

”Tested it against something considerably faster than anything I’d faced before. It held.”

”Then we’ll build on that.” Garrett’s weathered face carried a rare, genuine pride. ”You’ve come further in these past months than most students manage in years, Arlen. I don’t say that lightly.”

They resumed training with renewed focus, and Arlen found himself, over the following weeks, settling into a rhythm that felt considerably more grounded than the anxious, careful calculation that had characterized his earlier months in Greyhaven — his abilities properly documented in his own private understanding, his cover story holding firm across every test it had faced, his growing reputation built on genuine, visible achievement rather than the careful lies he’d once feared might eventually unravel everything.

He wrote in his journal one evening, several weeks after his return, the entry carrying a reflective, settled quality distinct from the anxious uncertainty of his earlier entries.

Seven abilities now, three named Aura techniques, a genuinely new species documented and properly credited to my name, and a growing reputation built on exactly the kind of work I always hoped would define this life — exploration, discovery, careful documentation of the world’s overlooked corners.

I think about Lyra’s words from weeks ago, about eventually leaving the Ashen Frontier behind for a wider world. I understand now, more clearly than ever, that this region’s remaining unknowns are narrowing. The outer forest, the middle forest boundary, even that unmarked valley to the north — I’ve touched pieces of all of it now, in ways I couldn’t have imagined when I first walked through the guild’s doors.

There’s still more here, certainly. Eldrin’s follow-up expedition to the valley, whatever else the guild’s cartography archive might eventually send me toward. But I feel the horizon shifting, the way it did after the boundary expedition , except this time I understand exactly what that shift actually means.

Soon, I think, genuinely soon this time, I’ll be ready to leave this frontier behind — not because I’ve exhausted everything it has to teach me, but because I’ve built, finally, the foundation I always knew I’d need before venturing toward everything still waiting beyond it.

The world is still enormous. I haven’t forgotten that, not for a single day since I first made that promise to myself, dying in another life entirely. But for the first time, I feel genuinely, properly ready to go looking for the rest of it.

He closed the journal, the guild hall’s familiar evening warmth settling comfortably around him, and found himself, gazing out toward the darkening horizon beyond his window, filled with the same quiet, patient anticipation that had carried him through every deliberate stage of this remarkable, hard-won life — not rushing toward whatever came next, but genuinely, finally ready for it, whenever it finally arrived.
