Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 77: Chapter 77 — What the Trail Teaches

They spent the following two days completing the survey work methodically, confirming the pattern of territorial displacement across the disputed ground and cataloguing enough evidence to assemble a proper report for the coalition — nothing more sinister than an expanding population of the larger, more aggressive boar variety pushing smaller game out of its usual range.

”Clean answer,” Fennis said, reviewing their combined notes on the evening of the eighth day. ”Coalition will need to adjust their hunting routes, maybe thin the boar population if it keeps expanding, but nothing that requires ongoing guild involvement.”

”Satisfying, in its own way,” Arlen said. ”Not every mystery needs to stay a mystery.”

”Wish more of them resolved this cleanly.”

They made camp that evening in a clearing they’d used once before during their approach, the familiarity of the ground settling into something comfortable rather than merely practical, and Arlen found the conversation drifting, as it had increasingly across the past days, toward territory considerably more personal than tracking methodology or survey notes.

”Can I ask you something?” Fennis said, once they’d finished their meal, her usual careful reserve softened by several days of accumulated trust.

”Of course.”

”That night you used fire against the goblin leader. And whatever you did at the timber camp, from what I heard secondhand.” She studied him across the fire, not accusatory, simply curious in the direct, unhurried way she approached everything. ”I’ve never pressed you on it. Wasn’t my business, and you clearly didn’t want it discussed. But I find myself wondering, sometimes, what it actually is you’re carrying.”

Arlen felt the familiar tension rise, though considerably softer now than it might have been with someone he trusted less. ”Elemental Aura, mostly. Or that’s the story, at least.”

”Mostly,” Fennis repeated, catching the qualifier immediately. ”That’s not quite a full answer.”

He considered his words carefully, weighing how much honesty this particular moment, this particular person, actually warranted. ”It’s more complicated than a simple Aura technique. I don’t fully understand it myself, if I’m honest. I’ve been careful about how much I let people see, not because I don’t trust the people around me, but because I don’t have a clean explanation even for myself yet.”

Fennis absorbed that without pressing further, her expression carrying the same quiet respect she’d shown him since the goblin camp. ”I won’t ask more than that, unless you want to offer it. Figured you had your reasons, same as everyone’s got things they don’t talk about.”

”Thank you,” Arlen said, genuinely grateful. ”For not pushing.”

”Not my style.” She poked at the fire, sending a small shower of sparks upward into the darkening sky. ”Doesn’t mean I’m not curious. Just means I respect that it’s yours to share or not, on your own timeline.”

They fell into comfortable silence after that, and Arlen found himself, studying her in the firelight, appreciating anew the particular quality of trust she’d built with him across this week — not through demanding explanations, but through the patient, steady presence of someone genuinely willing to let him be exactly as open or guarded as he needed to be.

”Can I ask you something now?” he said.

”Fair’s fair.”

”That offer you mentioned, from the eastern guild branch. Do you regret turning it down?”

Fennis considered the question with the same careful attention she gave everything. ”Some days. Most days, no. I think I needed more time with Reya and Dorn before I was ready to actually leave anything behind properly.” She glanced at him. ”You’re planning something similar, aren’t you. Leaving the Ashen Frontier eventually, once you feel ready.”

”I am. Ashford’s Crossing made it feel real in a way it hadn’t before. I keep thinking about everything past what I’ve already seen — other guild branches, other cities, other kinds of danger I can’t even properly imagine yet.”

”That’s not a small ambition.”

”No,” Arlen admitted. ”But I don’t think I could live with myself, settling for less. I made myself a promise a long time ago, about seeing everything the world has to offer. I don’t intend to break it out of comfort.”

Fennis studied him a long moment, something warm and thoughtful behind her usual reserve. ”I believe that, about you. You’re not built for staying comfortable, even when comfortable would be easier.”

”Neither are you, I think,” he said. ”Whatever kept you here this past year, I don’t think it was comfort alone.”

”No,” she agreed quietly. ”It wasn’t.”

The conversation settled into something quieter after that, both of them content to simply sit together in the fire’s warmth, the accumulated ease of a week’s careful, shared work settling into a comfortable intimacy neither felt any particular need to rush or name.

”I like this,” Fennis said eventually, breaking the comfortable silence. ”Talking like this. Most people I work with, we handle the job and go our separate ways after. This feels different.”

”It does,” Arlen agreed. ”I think I needed this, honestly. Someone who understands the restlessness without needing me to explain it.”

”Mutual, then.” She smiled, small but genuine, an expression he’d rarely seen from her across their shared history. ”Rare thing, finding someone who actually gets it.”

They talked a while longer as the fire burned lower, the conversation ranging easily across shared memories of the guild — the goblin camp, Reya’s sharp humor, Dorn’s exaggerated stories, the particular found-family warmth that had grown, gradually and without any single defining moment, around the loose collection of adventurers Arlen had come to genuinely care for.

”Thank you,” Arlen said finally, as the evening wound toward its natural close. ”For this whole trip. Not just the work. The company.”

”Same,” Fennis said, holding his gaze a moment longer than the simple word required. ”Been a long time since a contract felt like more than just a job.”

Something unspoken settled into the quiet space between them then, neither fully acknowledged nor entirely denied, and Arlen found himself, banking the fire for the night, aware of a warmth that had nothing to do with the flames themselves — the particular, grounding comfort of genuine connection, built patiently across days of shared trust rather than anything rushed or assumed.

He wrote briefly in his journal before finally settling in to sleep, the entry carrying a reflective quality distinct from his usual careful documentation.

Two days left before we start back properly. I find myself, more than I expected to, valuing this week beyond the simple practical success of the survey itself. Fennis understands something about wanting more than comfortable stillness that most people simply don’t — the restlessness, the sense that staying, however easy, isn’t the same as being satisfied.

I don’t know exactly what tomorrow holds, or the day after. I only know I’m grateful, tonight, for the particular ease of this friendship — however it continues to shape itself.

He closed the journal, the fire’s last embers glowing soft against the surrounding dark, and let sleep find him slowly, the comfortable warmth of the evening settling gently over the quiet, shared space between their two bedrolls.
