Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 80: Chapter 80 — An Understanding

The walk back to Greyhaven took two full days, the terrain gradually shifting from the disputed territory’s dense, unfamiliar woodland into the more comfortable, well-traveled ground of the outer forest, and Arlen found the journey settling into an easy, companionable rhythm alongside Fennis that carried neither the awkwardness he might have feared nor any pressure to define what had passed between them beyond what they’d already, honestly, agreed to.

”You’re quieter than usual,” Fennis observed, on their first afternoon back on familiar trails, glancing sideways at him as they walked.

”Just thinking. About the report, mostly. Want to make sure Reya and Dorn get a proper accounting of everything we found.”

”Good instinct.” She adjusted her pack, the motion easy and practiced. ”Though I suspect that’s not the only thing on your mind.”

Arlen considered denying it, then decided against the impulse, understanding by now that Fennis valued directness more than careful deflection. ”I keep thinking about Ashford’s Crossing. How different everything felt out there. And now this whole week, learning things about myself I hadn’t quite put into words before.”

”Restlessness clarifying itself,” Fennis said. ”That’s a good way to spend a week, even if it wasn’t the plan going in.”

They made camp that evening within a day’s walk of Greyhaven’s western gate, close enough now to familiar territory that the careful vigilance of the deeper wilderness eased into something more relaxed, and Arlen found himself, preparing their final shared meal of the journey, turning over the conversation still waiting for them — not because either of them doubted its shape, but because some things, he’d learned, deserved to be said plainly rather than simply assumed.

”I want to say something properly,” he said, once they’d settled by the fire. ”Not because I think either of us is confused about where this stands. Just because I think it matters to actually say it.”

”Go ahead,” Fennis said, settling in to listen with her usual attentive patience.

”What happened between us — I don’t regret it, and I don’t think you do either. But I meant what I said. I’m going to leave the Ashen Frontier eventually. Properly leave, not knowing when I’ll come back, if ever. I don’t think it would be fair to either of us to pretend that’s not true, or to let this become something it can’t honestly be.”

Fennis nodded slowly, no hurt in her expression, only the same steady understanding she’d shown him throughout their whole conversation the morning after. ”I feel the same, for what it’s worth. Not about leaving the Frontier — not yet, anyway. But about my own path. Rank C, maybe further. Building something with Reya and Dorn that I’m not ready to walk away from, even for something as good as what we shared.”

”So we’re agreed,” Arlen said. ”This was real. It mattered. And it’s not the beginning of something more than what it already was.”

”Agreed,” Fennis said, and something in her voice carried genuine warmth rather than any wistful regret. ”I think that’s actually the healthiest way to hold it, honestly. Not every good thing needs to become a permanent thing to have been worth having.”

They sat together in comfortable quiet for a while after that, the fire’s warmth settling over them with none of the charged tension from two nights earlier, replaced now by something steadier — the particular ease of two people who’d been honest with each other from the very start and found, in that honesty, something worth genuinely valuing regardless of its shape going forward.

”Can I ask you something?” Arlen said eventually.

”Always.”

”Do you think we’ll cross paths again? Properly, I mean. Not just passing each other at the guild hall.”

Fennis considered the question with her usual careful attention. ”I’d like to think so. The world’s not so large that two people who’ve genuinely valued each other can’t eventually find their way back into the same orbit, if fate’s willing.” A small, knowing smile touched her expression. ”Though I suspect, by the time that happens, we’ll both be considerably different people than we are right now.”

”Maybe that’s not a bad thing,” Arlen said. ”I think I’d like to meet whoever you become, once you’ve chased down everything you’re working toward.”

”Same,” Fennis said. ”I have a feeling you’re going to become someone genuinely remarkable, wherever your restlessness eventually carries you. I’d like to see that too, someday.”

They finished their meal in comfortable silence, the conversation settling into its natural conclusion without any lingering awkwardness, and Arlen found himself, banking the fire for their final night on the trail, genuinely grateful for the particular grace with which Fennis had handled every part of this — the vulnerability of that first night, the honest clarity of the morning after, and now this final, mutual acknowledgment that let them both walk away from the experience with nothing but genuine warmth between them.

”For what it’s worth,” he said, settling in for the night, ”I think this is exactly how I’d want to remember my first time. Not complicated. Not something either of us has to carry forward wondering what it should have become. Just real, and honest, and complete in itself.”

”I couldn’t have said it better,” Fennis said, and reached across the small distance between their bedrolls to squeeze his hand once, warm and brief, before settling in for sleep herself. ”Thank you, Arlen. Genuinely.”

”Thank you,” he echoed, and found the words carried the full weight of everything the week had given him — not just the intimacy they’d shared, but the deeper friendship underlying it, the mutual understanding that had made everything that followed feel safe rather than fraught.

They reached Greyhaven’s western gate the following afternoon, the familiar city walls rising up to meet them with their usual comfortable, grounding normalcy, and found Reya waiting near the guild hall’s entrance, her sharp eyes taking in both of their expressions with evident, immediate curiosity.

”Well?” she said, studying them both with open, unashamed interest. ”How’d the survey go?”

”Clean answer,” Fennis said, matching Reya’s directness with her own. ”Territorial boar population, nothing requiring further guild involvement. Full report’s ready for the coalition.”

”Good.” Reya’s gaze lingered a moment longer between the two of them, something knowing flickering behind her sharp expression, though she chose, with evident deliberate tact, not to press further. ”Glad it went well. All of it, from the look of things.”

”All of it,” Fennis confirmed, offering Arlen a final, warm glance before turning toward the guild hall’s entrance. ”Come on. Let’s get this report properly filed before Dorn recovers enough to complain we left him out of the interesting parts.”

Arlen followed her inside, the familiar rhythm of guild life settling comfortably back around him, and found himself, despite everything the week had given and asked of him, genuinely at peace — grateful for Fennis, grateful for the honest clarity they’d built together, and quietly, steadily certain that whatever came next in his own restless, patient journey toward the wider world, he’d carry this particular memory forward exactly as it deserved to be carried: complete, unburdened, and entirely his own.
