Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 63: Chapter 63 — Turning the Tide

The treant’s limb came down, and Cass’s flame met it mid-strike, the collision throwing sparks and splintered bark in every direction, buying a single, precious half-second that gave Arlen just enough time to roll clear.

He came up on his knees, one arm still refusing to properly cooperate, and forced himself to think rather than simply react. Halvard remained motionless against the tree where he’d fallen. Wren’s arrows continued landing, but each one seemed to matter less than the last, the treant’s fury apparently burning hotter than any wound they’d managed to inflict. Cass was failing, her castings growing weaker with each repetition, her reserves clearly nearing their end.

This isn’t working, he thought, the same cold clarity that had carried him through Millbrook settling over him now. We need something different, or this ends badly for all of us.

He thought of Garrett’s words from weeks earlier — whatever you’re carrying beyond what I’ve taught you, use it if the situation demands it — and understood, watching the treant raise its limb for what might be a finishing blow against Cass, that the situation had unquestionably arrived.

He forced himself upright, ignoring the protest of his abused shoulder, and drew on every reserve he had left. Enduring Vitality steadied his balance despite the damage. He gathered heat at his one working hand, letting it build hotter and more concentrated than he’d ever risked before, and channeled it directly into a desperate, full-force Edgeline Strike as he closed the remaining distance.

”Here!” he shouted, needing the treant’s attention off Cass more than he needed anything else in that moment. ”Over here!”

The creature’s ruined, hollow gaze swung toward him, and its raised limb redirected mid-motion, crashing down where Arlen had been standing a half-second before he’d already thrown himself sideways, rolling through the impact’s shockwave and coming up close against its wounded flank.

He drove the burning strike home directly into the same smoking, blackened wound Cass’s earlier casting had opened, putting everything he had left into the technique — not the clean, controlled form Garrett had spent months teaching him, but something rawer, more desperate, heat and Aura both screaming through the blade as it bit deep into already-compromised wood.

The treant’s shriek this time carried something different than pain alone — something closer to genuine, mortal distress, the wound Arlen had opened visibly widening, fire catching properly now in wood already weakened past its ability to resist.

”Wren!” Arlen called, already stumbling back from the creature’s flailing retaliation. ”The head, now, while it’s distracted!”

Wren didn’t hesitate, drawing and loosing in one fluid motion, and this time her arrow found true purchase in the same hollow indentation her earlier shot had marked, driving deep enough that the treant’s flailing motion stuttered, faltered, its massive form swaying with sudden, visible instability.

Cass, seeing the opening, forced one final casting from her depleted reserves, a smaller but precisely aimed lance of flame driving straight into the widening wound at its flank.

The combined damage proved, finally, decisive.

The treant’s form shuddered, its remaining limb dropping uselessly to its side, and it swayed for one long, suspended moment before collapsing entirely, the impact shaking the ground hard enough that Arlen nearly lost his footing again.

Silence settled over the clearing, broken only by the crackle of fire still consuming the wound at its flank and Cass’s ragged, exhausted breathing.

”Halvard,” Arlen managed, forcing his battered body toward where the warrior still lay motionless.

Cass reached him first, kneeling beside Halvard with hands that trembled from exhaustion but moved with practiced efficiency regardless, checking for injury with careful, methodical attention despite her own depleted state.

”Breathing,” she said, relief cracking through her exhaustion. ”Unconscious, ribs likely broken from that hit, but breathing steadily. He’ll need proper healing, soon, but he’s alive.”

Wren arrived a moment later, bow finally lowered, surveying the fallen treant with the same careful caution she’d shown after their first assumption of victory. ”Confirmed dead this time. Properly dead.”

Arlen sank down beside Halvard, his own shoulder throbbing with an intensity that even Enduring Vitality’s support couldn’t fully dull, and found himself simply breathing for a long moment, the adrenaline of the fight draining away and leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion unlike anything he’d experienced since Millbrook.

”That last strike,” Wren said quietly, settling beside him once the immediate danger had passed, her tone carrying open admiration rather than suspicion. ”Never seen an Aura technique carry heat like that. Is that something Garrett taught you?”

”Something I’ve been working on personally,” Arlen said, which was, in its own careful way, entirely true. ”Channeling heat through the strike rather than just force. Still rough — wasn’t sure it would hold under real pressure until today.”

”Well, it held,” Wren said. ”Held well enough to turn the whole fight, from where I was standing.”

Cass, exhausted but recovering, glanced over with tired approval. ”Elemental-infused Aura’s rare this early in someone’s training. You’ll want to keep refining that — could be a real signature technique for you, given time.”

”I intend to,” Arlen said, grateful, not for the first time, at how naturally the world’s own understanding of Aura’s flexibility folded his ability into something unremarkable rather than exposing.

They worked quickly to stabilize Halvard as best they could manage without a proper healer present, Cass exhausting what little remained of her reserves on basic restorative magic while Arlen, despite his own injuries, helped bind the worst of Halvard’s visible wounds with supplies from his pack.

”We need to get him back to camp,” Cass said, once she’d done what she could. ”Proper healing, beyond what I’ve got left in me.”

They constructed a rough litter from cut branches and spare cloth, and the journey back toward the timber camp proved slow and grueling, Arlen and Wren taking turns helping carry the makeshift stretcher while Cass, depleted but still functional, kept watch for any further danger the wounded, exhausted party couldn’t afford to face.

They reached the camp as evening settled over the forest, Tobias meeting them with visible alarm at the sight of Halvard’s condition, quickly organizing what medical supplies the logging operation kept on hand while a runner was dispatched toward the nearest settlement with proper healing capability.

Arlen sat outside the camp’s modest medical tent long after Halvard had been settled inside, his own shoulder finally, gradually easing under Enduring Vitality’s steady support, and found himself turning over the day’s events with the same careful, unflinching honesty he applied to every serious failure.

We won. Barely. Halvard’s hurt badly, Cass exhausted past anything I’ve seen from her before, and it very nearly went the other way entirely.

I keep thinking about how close we came to losing him. Losing all of us, maybe, if that last strike hadn’t landed when it did. Wren and Cass both seemed to think what I did was simply an elemental Aura technique, impressive but not strange — and I suppose, in a sense, that’s exactly what it looked like from where they stood. I’m grateful for that, though I don’t feel entirely comfortable with how easily the explanation held.

Today taught me something Millbrook already tried to teach me once — preparation matters enormously, but even the best preparation sometimes isn’t enough, and the choices you make in the worst moments define you more than any amount of careful planning beforehand.

Halvard’s alive. That’s what matters most tonight. I don’t know yet what tomorrow brings for his recovery, but for now, I’m simply grateful we’re all still breathing.

He closed the journal, the camp settling into a tense, exhausted quiet around him, and found himself watching the medical tent’s flickering lamplight with a worry that had nothing to do with his own secrets and everything to do with whether Halvard would wake properly in the morning.
