Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 52: Chapter 52 — What the Leader Guarded

They moved before dawn, the forest still deep in shadow, the camp’s crude palisade a darker shape against the slightly lighter sky beyond it.

Arlen and Fennis crept toward the rear breach in careful, measured silence, every sense sharpened, the plan settled clearly in both their minds after the previous evening’s discussion. Behind them, somewhere out of sight, Reya, Dorn, Cobb, and Sil held their positions near the main entrance, waiting for the signal that would set the whole plan into motion.

The breach proved exactly as Fennis had described — a gap where the palisade’s rough timber had rotted through, wide enough for a person to slip through carefully if they didn’t mind the smell of the waste pit it evidently served. Fennis went first, moving with the same silent economy Arlen had come to expect from her, and he followed close behind, sword drawn but held low.

The camp’s interior sprawled out before them in the gray pre-dawn light — crude shelters built from scavenged wood and hide, cookfires banked low for the night, the whole space carrying the acrid, unwashed smell of a settlement with no real concern for sanitation. Most of the goblins, from what Arlen could see, remained asleep in their shelters, only a scattered few keeping half-hearted watch near the main entrance.

Fennis pointed silently toward the camp’s center, where a larger structure stood apart from the rest — clearly the leader’s own quarters, marked by cruder but more deliberate craftsmanship than anything surrounding it.

They crept toward it with agonizing care, every step measured, every sound checked before committing to the next movement. Arlen’s heart hammered against his ribs, adrenaline sharpening every sense to a fine, almost painful clarity, and he found himself grateful, in that tense silence, for Enduring Vitality’s steady support beneath the strain.

They reached the leader’s shelter without incident, and Fennis paused at its entrance, blades ready, glancing back at Arlen for confirmation before easing the crude hide flap aside.

The leader was larger than Arlen had expected from Fennis’s earlier description — easily the size of a grown man, its green-gray hide thick and scarred, a crude but functional axe resting within easy reach of where it slept. It stirred, some instinct alerting it to the intrusion a half-second too late.

Fennis moved first, blades flashing in the dim light, but the leader’s reflexes proved sharper than anticipated, rolling clear of the strike and coming up with its axe already in hand, a guttural roar tearing from its throat that shattered the camp’s fragile silence entirely.

”That’s the signal,” Arlen said, already moving to support Fennis as the leader’s roar set the entire camp into sudden, chaotic motion around them. ”Go!”

Shouts erupted from the main entrance almost immediately, Reya’s voice carrying clear and sharp over the rising commotion, and Arlen caught, even amid the chaos of his own fight, the satisfying confirmation that the diversion had drawn the bulk of the camp’s attention away from the leader’s quarters exactly as planned.

The leader proved a genuinely dangerous opponent, its axe strikes carrying considerable force behind them, and Arlen found himself falling back on every hour of Garrett’s grinding, patient instruction — proper footwork, clean economical strikes, none of the wasted motion that had characterized his fight against the jackals months earlier. He and Fennis worked in careful tandem, trading openings, drawing the leader’s attention between them in a rhythm that felt, despite the danger, remarkably coordinated for two people who’d never fought together quite like this before.

Fennis opened a shallow cut along the leader’s forearm, and it roared again, swinging its axe in a wide, dangerous arc that forced Arlen back several steps, the blade passing close enough that he felt the wind of it against his face.

Too close, he thought, and made a decision he’d been weighing since the previous evening.

He let a controlled thread of heat gather at his palm, careful and contained, and drove it forward in a quick, focused burst directly into the leader’s exposed side as it overextended from its wild swing. The creature shrieked, flesh singeing where the heat connected, stumbling back in genuine pain for the first time in the engagement.

Fennis’s eyes widened, just slightly, catching the flare of visible flame at Arlen’s palm even in the chaos of the fight, but she said nothing, pressing the advantage immediately with a precise strike across the leader’s exposed throat that ended the engagement in a spray of dark blood.

The leader collapsed, and the sudden silence in its wake felt almost as jarring as the chaos that had preceded it.

”That was Mana,” Fennis said, breathing hard, studying him with open, unguarded curiosity now that the immediate danger had passed. ”Actual fire. Not just Aura.”

Arlen felt the careful calculation rise automatically, even through his own racing pulse and the lingering adrenaline of the fight. ”Been working on it privately. Wasn’t sure it was reliable enough to use until just now.”

”Dual-Affinity,” Fennis said, not quite a question, filing the observation away with the same quiet, careful attention she brought to everything.

”Something like that,” Arlen said, and left it there, grateful that Fennis, of everyone in the party, seemed the least inclined to press further into details that weren’t immediately relevant to survival.

Outside, the sounds of the main engagement continued, though considerably less chaotic now than before — exactly as Arlen’s theory had predicted, the goblins’ organized resistance crumbling rapidly once their leader’s roar cut off and news of its fall spread through the disorganized ranks. By the time Arlen and Fennis emerged from the leader’s quarters, the fight at the main entrance had already begun winding down, scattered goblins fleeing into the surrounding forest rather than continuing to press an attack that had clearly lost whatever coordination it once possessed.

Reya found them shortly after, her own blade streaked with dark blood, a shallow cut across one arm that Sil was already tending to with practiced efficiency. ”Leader?”

”Down,” Fennis confirmed. ”Arlen finished it. Camp’s routing, just like his theory predicted.”

Reya’s gaze shifted to Arlen with something like genuine respect. ”Good call, on the strategy. Good work, on the execution.”

They spent the remainder of the morning clearing the camp fully, confirming no further organized resistance remained, and searching the scattered shelters for whatever salvage the goblins had accumulated from their weeks of raiding — crude weapons, a modest hoard of coin, several bundles of trade goods clearly stolen from the caravans Corwin had described.

Arlen found himself, once the immediate danger had passed and the practical work of salvage began, turning over Fennis’s earlier observation with careful attention. She hadn’t pressed for details, hadn’t seemed particularly alarmed or suspicious beyond simple, straightforward curiosity — but she had seen it, undeniably, and would presumably mention it eventually to the others, exactly the outcome he’d been trying to delay through careful, private testing.

No use regretting it now, he thought, helping bundle the recovered trade goods for the walk back to Miller’s Bend. The fight demanded it. I made the right call, even knowing what it would cost in terms of the story I’ve been building.

He wrote about the engagement that evening, once they’d made camp for the return journey, the goblin camp’s smoldering remains left behind them at Reya’s insistence — burned rather than left standing, denying any surviving stragglers an easy place to regroup.

Used Ember Touch openly for the first time today. Fennis saw it clearly, called it Mana without hesitation. I confirmed the general shape of the story — Dual-Affinity — without offering more detail than that, and she didn’t press further. I don’t know yet whether that will hold, going forward, once the others hear about it, but for now, it seems to have landed the way I hoped it would.

The goblin leader is dead, the camp destroyed, and Corwin’s trade route should be safe again, at least for a while. Ninety silver between six of us, considerably better pay than I expected walking into this. But more than the coin, I think what matters most tonight is this: my theory held. My training held. And when the moment demanded something more than training could offer, I had exactly what I needed, hidden but ready, and it made the difference between a difficult fight and a genuinely dangerous one.

I don’t know how many more times I’ll be able to keep this hidden. But tonight, at least, I don’t regret the choice I made to stop hiding it, when hiding it would have cost more than the secret was worth.

He closed the journal, the fire crackling low beside him, and allowed himself, for the first time since the engagement began, to simply feel the quiet, hard-won satisfaction of a difficult job done well — the goblin threat ended, his friends safe, and one more careful step taken toward the strength he’d promised himself he would build, deliberately and properly, ever since the night Millbrook taught him exactly how much more that strength might someday cost him.
