Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 75: Chapter 75 — The Long Track

The return journey from Ashford’s Crossing settled into a rhythm considerably steadier than the outbound trip’s early trouble, Voss’s caravan moving with the practiced caution of guards who’d already faced down both displaced wildlife and opportunistic bandits and come through intact.

Arlen found the weeks passing differently this time — less anxious vigilance, more genuine reflection, the accumulated wonder of Ashford’s Crossing settling into him gradually as the familiar terrain of the Ashen Frontier drew steadily closer with each day’s travel.

They avoided the Thornback Wood entirely this time, Voss rerouting the caravan along a longer but safer path once word reached them, through a fellow trader passing in the opposite direction, that guild patrols had since confirmed a displaced pack of razor-boars still working the original stretch of road. The detour cost them two extra days, but nobody argued the wisdom of it.

”Word travels fast, out here,” Corin observed, riding alongside Arlen as the caravan wound its way along the alternate route. ”Faster than I expected, anyway, for something as minor as a boar pack.”

”Traders talk to traders,” Dask said, overhearing. ”Whole network of information moving up and down these roads, same as the goods themselves. You learn to listen for it, working this line long enough.”

Arlen turned that observation over with quiet interest, recognizing in it something of the same lesson Bram had once tried to teach him about tavern gossip and guild bulletins — the world’s rumors carrying real, practical weight if a person knew how to properly value them.

The caravan reached Greyhaven’s outer farmland a little under two months after their original departure, and Arlen found himself, seeing the familiar city walls rise up ahead of them, filled with a strange, dual sensation he hadn’t quite expected — genuine relief at the sight of something so thoroughly known, tangled together with a quiet, persistent restlessness that Ashford’s Crossing had left settled deep in his chest.

Voss paid out the final portion of the contract through proper guild channels once they’d passed through the western gate, the full 200 silver processed cleanly against Arlen’s account, and the caravan’s guards parted ways with the easy, practical camaraderie of people who’d shared genuine danger and come through it together.

”Good work, all of you,” Voss said, shaking each guard’s hand in turn. ”I’ll request guild escort again for future contracts, and I’ll ask for you specifically, Arlen, if the guild allows it.”

”I’d be glad of the work,” Arlen said, and found he meant it, despite the accumulated exhaustion of nearly two months’ constant travel.

He spent his first few days back in Greyhaven readjusting to the city’s familiar rhythm — checking in properly with Garrett, whose training regimen resumed with barely a pause for Arlen’s extended absence, and delivering his careful documentation from Ashford’s Crossing to Eldrin, who received the notes with the same delighted enthusiasm he brought to every genuine discovery.

”River-based cuisine, unfamiliar architecture, and a rumor of southern political unrest,” Eldrin said, reviewing the pages with evident satisfaction. ”This is excellent material, Arlen. The kind of firsthand account that makes the archive genuinely valuable rather than simply academic.”

”I wasn’t sure how much of it counted as proper documentation, versus just personal curiosity.”

”All of it counts. That’s precisely the point.” Eldrin set the notes carefully aside. ”You have a gift for this, you know. Not every adventurer returns from a contract with pages of careful, thoughtful observation. Most simply collect their pay and move on to the next job.”

Arlen carried that observation with him over the following week, settling back into his ordinary quest work alongside Garrett’s resumed training, though he found his thoughts returning, more often than he expected, to the wider world Ashford’s Crossing had briefly opened to him — the trade routes stretching south, the guild branch handling threats entirely foreign to anything the Ashen Frontier offered, Sarai’s careful mention of trouble stirring somewhere beyond the borders he’d always known.

It was during this settling-back period that Reya found him at the guild hall, a proposition already forming behind her sharp, familiar expression.

”Crimson Jackals took on a tracking contract,” she said, dropping into the seat across from him. ”Week-long job, scouting a stretch of disputed territory near the northern border for a coalition of hunters who’ve been finding their usual routes disrupted. Problem is, Dorn’s laid up with a fever, and Fennis needs a partner who can actually keep pace with her out there.”

”You’re not going?”

”Someone needs to hold down our other contracts while we’re short a body. Figured you’d be a good fit — you two work well together, from what I remember of the goblin camp.”

Arlen found Fennis herself at the guild hall later that afternoon, going over trail maps with her usual quiet, focused attention.

”Reya mentioned the job,” he said, settling across from her.

”Figured she would.” Fennis glanced up, her expression carrying the same understated directness he’d come to appreciate since the goblin camp. ”Week out, week back roughly, depending on terrain. Just the two of us — mostly tracking and mapping, not combat, though we should be ready regardless.”

”I’m in, if you’ll have me.”

”Wouldn’t have suggested it to Reya otherwise.”

He wrote a brief entry that evening, packing his gear for departure two days out, the accumulated restlessness of his return from Ashford’s Crossing settling into something quieter, more purposeful, now that a fresh assignment waited ahead of him.

Back from Ashford’s Crossing a little over a week now. Strange, how quickly Greyhaven’s familiar rhythm reasserted itself, even after everything I saw out there. Eldrin’s pleased with the documentation. Garrett’s resumed training without missing a step. And now a new contract, north this time, tracking work alongside Fennis while Dorn recovers.

I find myself looking forward to it. Not just the work itself, but the company. We worked well together at the goblin camp, and I think there’s more worth learning from how she approaches this kind of careful, patient fieldwork.

One more horizon before the next one, I suppose. That seems to be the shape of this life now — always something new waiting just past whatever I’ve most recently finished.

He closed the journal, the evening settling comfortably around him, and turned his attention toward preparing properly for the days ahead, already looking forward, with the same quiet, patient anticipation that had carried him through every deliberate stage of this remarkable life, to whatever the northern tracking contract might have waiting for him.
