Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 79: Chapter 79 — That Night

Neither of them spoke for a long moment after Fennis’s quiet admission, the fire settling into low, steady embers between them, the forest’s night sounds fading into something distant against the weight of the silence they shared.

Arlen moved first, though it didn’t feel like a decision so much as the natural continuation of everything the evening had already built toward. He rose and crossed the small distance between them, and Fennis watched him come, no hesitation in her expression, only a quiet, waiting warmth.

He settled beside her rather than across the fire, close enough now to feel the warmth of her skin against the night’s chill, and for a moment neither of them moved further, simply sitting together, letting the moment stretch as long as it needed to.

”You’re sure,” he said softly, wanting the words spoken plainly rather than assumed.

”I’m sure.” A pause, her fingers picking absently at the hem of her sleeve — the first crack in her usual steadiness he’d seen all evening. ”I should tell you. I haven’t — this isn’t something I’ve done before. Not properly.”

Arlen felt something shift in his chest at that, a tenderness that had nothing to do with careful calculation. ”Neither have I,” he admitted. ”I didn’t get much chance for this, growing up the way I did.”

Something eased in Fennis’s expression, a small, surprised laugh escaping her. ”Guess we’re figuring this out together, then.”

”Guess we are.”

She reached for him then, her hand finding his jaw, and he leaned into the touch before either of them closed the last distance entirely. The kiss carried the same slight uncertainty as the rest of the evening — a little careful at first, both of them adjusting, learning, until the careful hesitation gave way to something surer.

They moved slowly after that, neither of them entirely practiced at any of it, which somehow made the whole thing feel more honest rather than less — a quiet laugh when his elbow caught awkwardly against the bedroll, her hand steadying his with a patience that had nothing to do with her usual scout’s precision. The fire burned low beside them, casting shifting light across the small clearing, and Arlen found himself paying attention the way he paid attention to everything that mattered — the particular catch in her breath when he found the right place to press his mouth against her collarbone, the way her fingers dug into his shoulder when words failed her, the small, unguarded sound she made against his ear that he suspected he’d remember for a very long time.

There was nothing polished about it. It was fumbling in places, both of them working out by feel what the other wanted, pausing more than once to simply look at each other and confirm, wordlessly, that this was still exactly what they both wanted. Arlen found that clumsiness, oddly, more affecting than anything smoother could have been — proof that neither of them was performing, that this was simply two people offering each other something real for the first time, with all the awkward tenderness that entailed.

Later, they lay together beneath the shared warmth of a single blanket, the fire reduced to barely glowing embers. Fennis’s head rested against his chest, her breathing slow and even, and Arlen found himself simply holding her, tracing idle, absent patterns against her shoulder.

”Still awake?” she murmured eventually, her voice soft with drowsy contentment.

”Yeah,” he said. ”Just thinking.”

”About what?”

”How glad I am this happened. Whatever it means going forward.”

Fennis shifted, propping herself up enough to study him in the dim, dying firelight. ”We don’t have to figure that out tonight.”

”I know.” He brushed a strand of hair from her face. ”Just wanted you to know I meant it. This mattered.”

”It did,” she agreed, settling back against him, her hand finding his and lacing their fingers together in the dark. ”More than I expected it to.”

They didn’t speak much further after that, both of them drifting gradually toward sleep, and Arlen found himself, in the last quiet minutes before sleep claimed him, simply content — no anxious calculation about tomorrow, just the honest, unhurried warmth of the moment.

Morning arrived gray and soft through the canopy overhead, the fire long since burned to cold ash, and Arlen woke slowly to find Fennis already stirring beside him, her expression carrying the same warmth from the night before, softened now by the quiet ordinariness of morning light.

”Morning,” she said, a small smile touching her lips, though something a little shy lingered at the edges of it — an echo, he realized, of the same first-time uncertainty that had colored the whole night.

”Morning,” he echoed, smiling in return despite the practical reality of the day ahead — the walk back to Greyhaven, the eventual return to Reya and Dorn, the conversation about what last night actually meant that both of them understood was still waiting for them.

Neither of them rushed to have it yet. They lingered a while longer in the comfortable quiet of the morning, and Arlen found himself entirely at peace with whatever conversation the road ahead might eventually demand — grateful, simply, for exactly what last night had been, regardless of what came next.

They eventually rose to break camp, the practical business of the morning settling around them with an ease that surprised him — no awkwardness in it, just the same easy coordination they’d shared all week, now carrying a slightly different weight.

”For what it’s worth,” Fennis said, folding her bedroll with quiet efficiency, ”I don’t regret any of it. Not the awkward parts, not any of it.”

”Neither do I,” Arlen said. ”Think I’ll remember those parts most fondly, honestly. Felt more real than if either of us had known exactly what we were doing.”

That earned a genuine laugh from her, easing whatever small uncertainty remained in the morning air, and they finished packing together in comfortable quiet, the trail back to Greyhaven waiting patiently ahead of them.
