Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 96: Chapter 96 — What the Clearing Remembered

Dawn broke gray and quiet over Millbrook, and Arlen found himself, standing at the edge of the same clearing where he’d nearly died over a year earlier, struck by how ordinary it looked now — grass grown back over the scorched earth, the shattered trees long since cleared or fallen into natural decay, nothing visible to suggest the violence that had once torn through this ground.

”Doesn’t look like much,” Doran observed, studying the peaceful clearing with evident unease. ”Almost makes it worse, somehow. Knowing what’s actually still here, underneath how calm it looks.”

”That’s rather the point of purification work,” Maren said, joining them at the tree line, her pale gold robes catching the early light. ”Corruption rarely announces itself plainly. If it did, ordinary vigilance would have handled it centuries ago.”

She surveyed the clearing a long moment, her expression settling into the same focused, unhurried stillness Arlen had come to associate with her presence, before turning to address the assembled expedition.

”I’ll begin at the clearing’s center,” she said. ”That’s where Corrin’s readings consistently show the strongest concentration. I’ll need roughly an hour of sustained, uninterrupted focus, possibly longer depending on how deeply the corruption has settled.”

”And if something interrupts you?” Ilyana asked.

”Then the process fails, and we begin again another day, assuming I’m not seriously harmed in the interim.” Maren’s tone carried no dramatic weight, simply honest assessment. ”That’s precisely why your positions matter. I need this ground held absolutely, regardless of what emerges to contest it.”

The perimeter formed exactly as Ilyana had outlined the previous evening — Iron Vanguard and the capital team taking positions closest to the clearing’s center, forming a tight protective ring around where Maren would work, while Arlen, Halvard, and the remaining volunteers held a wider secondary perimeter further back, ready to reinforce wherever the primary line needed support.

Maren walked to the clearing’s center alone, knelt, and pressed both palms flat against the earth, and Arlen watched, from his position at the secondary line, as a faint, golden light began gathering around her — soft at first, barely visible in the growing daylight, then steadily, gradually intensifying as her focus deepened.

”Beginning,” Ilyana called quietly, relaying the obvious for the benefit of those too far back to see clearly. ”Hold positions. Watch for anything.”

The first several minutes passed in tense, uneventful silence, the golden light around Maren spreading slowly outward across the clearing floor in a widening circle, and Arlen found himself, watching from his position, reminded uncomfortably of Corrin’s earlier description — a wound being carefully, deliberately cleaned, the process slow and methodical rather than dramatic.

Then the ground began to tremble.

”Contact!” someone from the primary line shouted, and Arlen felt his whole body tense as the earth near the clearing’s edge split open, dark, twisted shapes emerging from the fissure with a speed that immediately recalled every terrible memory of that first night — smaller than the original creature, considerably smaller, but carrying the same wrong, unnatural quality, their forms shifting and blurring at the edges in ways that made his stomach turn simply looking at them.

”Three, maybe four!” Ilyana called, already moving to intercept the nearest one alongside Grennig’s shield-first advance. ”Iron Vanguard, take the eastern flank!”

Doran and Selene moved together with the same practiced coordination Arlen remembered from years of watching them work, Selene’s spells scattering one creature’s approach while Doran’s shield absorbed the worst of another’s retaliatory strike. Kaelis darted between the chaos with quick, precise strikes, and Sister Aria held back at a defensible distance, healing magic already gathering at her hands in preparation for whatever wounds the fight produced.

Arlen held his position at the secondary line, watching the primary combat unfold with the same careful, disciplined patience Halvard’s own steady presence beside him seemed to reinforce.

”Stay ready,” Halvard said quietly. ”If the primary line breaks, we move immediately. Until then, hold.”

The fight raged for several tense minutes, the primary team’s superior coordination and raw capability gradually wearing down the twisted creatures despite their unnerving resilience, and Arlen found himself genuinely humbled watching Ilyana and Iron Vanguard work in concert — not the desperate, improvised defense of that first terrible night, but disciplined, controlled combat against exactly this kind of threat.

Maren’s golden light continued spreading throughout the engagement, apparently undisturbed by the chaos unfolding around her, her focus absolute despite the danger closing in from multiple directions.

”She’s not stopping,” Arlen observed, watching the light’s steady, unbroken progress.

”She can’t,” Halvard said. ”Not without losing everything the process has already accomplished. That’s the whole danger of it — she’s committed the moment she begins, regardless of what happens around her.”

One of the twisted creatures broke through Iron Vanguard’s line briefly, surging toward Maren’s exposed position with alarming speed, and Arlen felt his whole body tense to move before Kaelis intercepted it with a burst of speed that matched anything Arlen’s own Storm Step could manage, driving it back before it closed the final distance.

”Close,” Doran called, breathing hard. ”Too close. Keep the line tight!”

The fight continued for what felt, to Arlen, like considerably longer than the actual minutes it likely spanned, the primary team gradually gaining ground against the twisted creatures’ unnatural resilience, until finally, one by one, the manifestations collapsed and dissolved into the same dark, formless residue that had characterized the original creature’s ending.

”Clear!” Ilyana called, breathing hard but triumphant. ”Hold positions regardless — she’s not finished yet.”

Maren’s golden light continued its slow, steady work for nearly another hour after the fighting ended, the entire expedition holding careful, watchful silence while she completed whatever remained of the process. Arlen found himself, standing at his position through the long, tense wait, genuinely struck by the sheer, patient discipline the work demanded — not the dramatic, decisive climax he might have half-expected, but a slow, methodical unwinding of something that had taken over a year to properly, fully address.

Finally, the golden light began to fade, gathering and dimming until it vanished entirely, and Maren sat back on her heels, visibly exhausted, her breathing unsteady in a way that suggested the process had cost her considerably more than her earlier composed briefing had let on.

”Report,” Ilyana called, moving cautiously toward the clearing’s center.

”Done,” Maren said, her voice carrying genuine, hard-won relief beneath its exhaustion. ”The site’s clean. Properly, fully clean — I can feel the difference clearly, compared to when I began.”

A quiet, collective relief spread through the assembled expedition, and Arlen found himself, standing at his position, releasing a breath he hadn’t fully realized he’d been holding since the fight began.

”And the other sites?” Garrick asked, helping Maren to her feet with careful, steadying hands. ”Does this tell us anything about them?”

”Something, yes,” Maren said, still catching her breath. ”The corruption here responded exactly as I’d hoped — fully addressable, once given proper, sustained attention. Whether the same holds true for sites that have progressed further, I genuinely don’t know yet. But this gives me confidence the fundamental approach is sound.”

Arlen made his way toward the clearing’s center once the primary team confirmed it fully secure, and found himself standing on ground that had nearly killed him, now finally, properly at peace in a way it hadn’t been since that terrible night over a year earlier.

He wrote about it that evening, back at the forward camp, his journal entry carrying a settled, hard-won weight distinct from anything he’d written in longer than he could easily remember.

Millbrook is clean. Properly, fully clean, according to Sister Ashwood’s own assessment. The fight was real, genuinely dangerous, though the primary team’s discipline made it look considerably more controlled than my own desperate, improvised defense ever managed that first night.

I stood on that ground today and felt something settle in me that I don’t think I fully realized was still unresolved. A year and more of carrying Millbrook’s weight, and today, finally, properly, it’s been set down.

Tomorrow, we begin planning for the sites beyond the boundary. Considerably more dangerous, by every account. But today taught me something important — that this work, however difficult, is genuinely possible. Whatever waits beyond the boundary, I believe now, more than I did even yesterday, that we can actually address it properly.

He closed the journal, the forward camp settling into a quiet, relieved rest around him, and found himself, for the first time since this whole crisis began, genuinely hopeful about whatever the expedition’s next stage might actually demand.
