Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 72: Chapter 72 — What the Road Hides

Four days passed without further incident, the caravan settling back into a cautious but steady rhythm as the trade road wound its way east through increasingly unfamiliar terrain. Arlen kept his vigilance sharp regardless, the razor-boar attack still fresh enough in everyone’s memory that the guards maintained a tighter formation than the journey’s first week had required.

It was Dask who first noticed the signs, on the morning of the caravan’s thirteenth day out from Greyhaven — a stretch of road cutting through a narrow valley where the surrounding hills rose steep enough to limit visibility on both sides.

”Don’t like this ground,” he said, reining his horse back to a slower pace as they approached. ”Good place for an ambush, if anyone were looking to arrange one.”

”Bandits, you mean,” Corin said.

”Wouldn’t be the first time this stretch has seen trouble. Voss knows it too, I’d wager, given how she’s eyeing the hills.”

Voss, riding near the lead wagon, called the caravan to a brief halt, studying the terrain with the same sharp, assessing focus she brought to every business decision. ”We’ve used this route before without incident. But I won’t pretend I like the look of it after what happened in Thornback Wood.” She glanced toward Arlen. ”Your eyes are sharper than the rest of us, from what I’ve seen. Anything up there worth worrying about?”

Arlen called on Hawk’s Eye, scanning the ridgelines on both sides of the narrow valley with careful, deliberate attention. For a long moment, nothing seemed amiss — just ordinary scrub brush and exposed rock, the ordinary texture of hill country terrain.

Then he caught it: a flicker of movement, too deliberate, too patient, tucked into a rocky outcropping on the valley’s eastern slope. A figure, crouched and still, watching the road below with the unmistakable patience of someone waiting for exactly the right moment.

”We’re being watched,” he said quietly. ”Eastern ridge, maybe two hundred yards ahead. At least one person, possibly more I can’t see from this angle.”

Voss’s expression hardened. ”Bandits, then. Options?”

”Turning back costs us days we don’t have,” Dask said. ”And there’s no guarantee the ambush isn’t set up behind us too, if they’ve had time to plan for a caravan this size.”

”Then we go through,” Voss said, ”but carefully. Guards, tighten formation around the wagons. Arlen, keep watching those ridges — I want warning the moment anything moves.”

They advanced at a deliberately slower pace, the caravan’s guards spreading into a defensive formation Arlen recognized from Dask’s own quiet coaching during the previous days’ travel — wagons kept close together, guards positioned to cover multiple angles rather than clustering defensively in one spot.

The ambush came a quarter mile further in, exactly where Arlen’s continued scanning had flagged the terrain as most dangerous — a narrow bend where the road curved sharply around a rocky outcropping, visibility reduced to almost nothing in the crucial seconds before the bend opened up again.

Arrows came first, loosed from the high ground on both sides, and Arlen’s warning shout gave the caravan just enough time to brace before the volley landed — one of the drivers took a shallow wound to the shoulder, but the guards’ quick reactions spared anyone worse.

”Positions!” Voss shouted, ducking behind the lead wagon’s frame. ”Corin, eastern slope! Dask, cover the wagons!”

Figures emerged from the rocks on both sides, perhaps eight in total, armed with a mismatched collection of blades and crude armor that spoke of desperate, opportunistic banditry rather than any organized military threat — but their numbers alone made the engagement genuinely dangerous against a caravan spread thin protecting three separate wagons.

Arlen moved to intercept the largest cluster bearing down on the rear wagon, drawing on Storm Step to close the distance before they could properly organize their attack. He met the first bandit with a clean Edgeline Strike that ended the engagement before it properly began, the man’s crude blade no match for trained Aura technique layered over months of hard-won combat experience.

The fight sprawled across the narrow bend in chaotic, overlapping skirmishes, Corin holding his own against two attackers on the eastern flank while Dask and the remaining guards worked to keep the bandits from actually reaching the wagons’ cargo. Arlen found himself, in the thick of it, calling on Earthen Grip almost without conscious thought — sensing, through the ground beneath his feet, the approach of a bandit attempting to circle behind him through a gap in the rocks, and turning to meet the ambush before it could properly land.

”Behind you!” he called to Corin, catching the same warning through vibration alone in time to shout across the chaos.

Corin pivoted just in time, his own blade catching the flanking attacker’s strike before it could connect, and the momentary reprieve let him finish his original opponent cleanly.

The bandits, evidently expecting an easier target given the caravan’s apparent modest size, began breaking off one by one as the fight turned decisively against them — three already down, the rest realizing too late that this particular caravan carried considerably more capable protection than their scouting had apparently accounted for.

”Fall back!” someone among them shouted, and the remaining bandits scattered toward the rocks, abandoning whatever plan they’d carefully laid in favor of simple survival.

Voss called an immediate halt to any pursuit. ”Let them go. We’re not losing anyone chasing bandits into unfamiliar terrain for the sake of pride.”

The caravan regrouped quickly, casualties limited to the driver’s shoulder wound and a handful of minor cuts and bruises among the guards, and Arlen found himself, once the immediate danger passed, turning over the engagement with the same careful, methodical attention he gave every serious encounter.

”Good instincts back there,” Dask told him, binding a shallow cut along his own arm. ”That warning about the flanking attacker probably saved Corin a nasty wound.”

”Just paying attention,” Arlen said, deflecting the specific mechanism behind his awareness the same careful way he always did.

They pushed onward that evening despite the danger, Voss unwilling to make camp anywhere near a stretch of road that had just proven itself compromised, and found safer ground several miles further along before finally settling in for a properly cautious night’s rest.

Arlen wrote about the day’s events once the camp had settled, his journal entry carrying the same grounded, reflective quality that had characterized most of his significant reflections these past months.

Bandits, this time, rather than displaced wildlife. Eight of them, opportunistic rather than organized, though dangerous enough given the terrain they’d chosen. We came through without serious losses, though it could easily have gone worse without proper vigilance.

Two dangerous encounters now, in less than a week. I keep thinking this route was supposed to be reasonably safe, according to Voss’s own assessment before we departed. Makes me wonder how much genuine danger simply goes unreported, out here beyond any single guild’s immediate territory — how much the wider world actually holds that the Ashen Frontier’s careful records never quite capture.

Ten more days to Ashford’s Crossing, by the revised estimate. I find myself, despite the accumulated danger, more curious than discouraged. This is exactly the kind of genuine test I told myself I wanted, when I first decided real growth meant more than careful, safe repetition.

I only hope the remainder of this journey offers slightly less excitement than its first two weeks have already provided.

He closed the journal, the camp settling into a wary, watchful quiet around him, and found himself, despite the day’s danger, filled with the same steady, grounded satisfaction that came from facing genuine challenge and proving, once again, that months of deliberate preparation had properly served him when it mattered most.
