Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 73: Chapter 73 — Ashford’s Crossing

The final approach to Ashford’s Crossing took the better part of a full day, the trade road widening gradually into a proper thoroughfare crowded with other travelers, merchant carts, and the steady increase in foot traffic that marked the outskirts of any genuinely large settlement.

Arlen found himself, despite the accumulated exhaustion of three weeks’ hard travel, unable to keep his attention from the city rising ahead of them — stone walls considerably taller than Greyhaven’s, multiple watchtowers spaced along their length, and beyond them, a skyline crowded with buildings that spoke of wealth and scale far beyond anything the Ashen Frontier’s modest capital could offer.

”First time seeing it?” Voss asked, riding alongside him as the caravan joined the queue at the city’s western gate.

”First time,” Arlen admitted. ”It’s larger than I expected, even having heard the descriptions.”

”Ashford’s Crossing sits at the convergence of three separate trade routes, plus the river traffic,” Voss said, a note of genuine pride in her voice despite her businesslike manner. ”Population’s easily four times Greyhaven’s, maybe more. You’ll find it considerably different from what you’re used to.”

The gate guards processed the caravan’s entry with brisk, practiced efficiency, and Arlen found himself, passing beneath the city’s massive stone archway, struck immediately by the sheer density of everything around him — buildings rising three and four stories in places, streets crowded with a diversity of races and dress that made even Greyhaven’s own multicultural guild district feel modest by comparison.

”There,” Corin said, nodding toward a large, elaborately carved building near the city’s central square. ”That’s the local guild hall. Bigger than ours by a fair margin.”

Arlen studied it as they passed, noting architectural details entirely different from Greyhaven’s own guild hall — stonework carved with intricate patterns he didn’t recognize, banners bearing crests from what appeared to be several affiliated organizations rather than a single unified guild presence.

Voss led the caravan toward a warehouse district near the river itself, where her trading contacts maintained proper storage facilities, and the party spent the remainder of that first evening securing the cargo and arranging lodging for the coming week.

”You’re free to explore, once the wagons are properly settled,” Voss told the assembled guards. ”The guild’s already arranged a standard travel allowance against your final payment, so you shouldn’t want for meals or lodging this week. I’ll need you back for the return journey in seven days’ time, but until then, your obligations are minimal beyond staying reachable.”

Arlen found himself, the following morning, walking through Ashford’s Crossing’s streets with the same careful, methodical attention he’d once given Greyhaven’s guild district as a curious slum child — except now, everything around him carried the genuine thrill of complete unfamiliarity rather than half-remembered childhood wonder.

The city’s central market alone dwarfed anything Greyhaven offered, stalls stretching across a plaza easily three times the size of his home city’s own market district, vendors calling out in a dozen different accents, goods on display that ranged from ordinary produce to items Arlen couldn’t immediately identify.

He stopped at a stall selling what the vendor described as river-caught delicacies, unlike anything he’d encountered in the Ashen Frontier’s landlocked terrain, and found himself genuinely delighted by the unfamiliar flavors — a preparation of freshwater shellfish seasoned with spices that carried none of the familiar profile he’d grown accustomed to back home.

”You’re not from around here,” the vendor observed, an older woman with sharp, friendly eyes, watching him savor the dish with obvious appreciation.

”Ashen Frontier,” Arlen said. ”Never had anything quite like this before.”

”River city cooking’s different from inland fare. More fish, more spice trade coming through from the southern routes.” She offered him a second sample, generous with her own evident pride. ”Try the pepper crust on that one. Different preparation entirely.”

He accepted eagerly, and found the new flavor equally fascinating, already reaching for his journal to properly document the experience even as he continued exploring.

River-Caught Shellfish, Ashford’s Crossing market district, he wrote, working through his now-practiced cataloguing process between bites. Completely different flavor profile from anything in the Ashen Frontier — heavier spice influence, likely from southern trade routes. Worth learning more about how spice trade actually reaches this far inland.

He spent the remainder of the morning wandering deeper into the market district, sampling where his modest travel funds allowed, cataloguing new dishes with the same genuine enthusiasm that had carried him through every deliberate culinary discovery since his very first taste of ember-tailed lizard.

He found the city’s guild hall by early afternoon, curious to see how a larger branch actually operated compared to Greyhaven’s more modest scale. The building’s interior proved even more impressive than its exterior had suggested — multiple floors visible through an open central atrium, quest boards stretching across an entire wall, considerably more crowded and diverse than anything he’d grown accustomed to.

”Visiting adventurer?” asked a registration clerk, noting his unfamiliar badge design.

”Escort contract, out of Greyhaven,” Arlen said. ”Just curious how things operate here, honestly.”

”Different scale, mostly, though the fundamentals stay the same.” The clerk gestured toward the crowded quest board. ”We handle considerably more river-based work than your frontier branch likely does — trade escort, cargo inspection, the occasional river monster subjugation when something disrupts shipping traffic.”

Arlen studied the board with genuine curiosity, noting postings for creatures and terrain entirely unfamiliar to him — river serpents, something called a ”current-wraith” that he didn’t recognize from any guild text he’d studied, subjugation work against threats considerably different from anything the Ashen Frontier’s forests offered.

”You’re welcome to browse,” the clerk added. ”Some branches allow visiting adventurers to pick up local work, if you’ve got the time and interest.”

He didn’t have the time, not this trip, but he filed the possibility away regardless, alongside every other careful observation he’d gathered since arriving. A different world, even within the same kingdom, he thought, studying the unfamiliar postings with genuine fascination. Different monsters. Different work. An entire branch of the guild I never even knew to imagine, back when the Ashen Frontier felt like the whole of everything.

He spent the remainder of that first full day continuing his exploration, cataloguing the city’s distinct architecture in his journal alongside its food, noting the different racial demographics compared to Greyhaven — more river-adapted races, he observed, merfolk occasionally visible near the docks, a notable absence of the beastkin tribes more common in his home region’s forested terrain.

He returned to the modest inn Voss had arranged for the caravan’s guards as evening settled over the city, exhausted but genuinely energized by the day’s discoveries, and wrote a lengthy journal entry before finally allowing himself proper rest.

One full day in Ashford’s Crossing, and already I understand something I couldn’t have properly grasped from Bram’s old stories or even Eldrin’s careful scholarship. The world doesn’t just get larger the further you travel — it gets genuinely, fundamentally different. New food, new architecture, new guild work I’d never even known to imagine wanting.

I have six more days here before we begin the return journey. I intend to use every one of them properly — exploring, tasting, documenting everything this city has to offer that the Ashen Frontier never could.

This is exactly what I promised myself, dying in that other life. Not just surviving in a new world, but genuinely experiencing it, one unfamiliar city, one unfamiliar meal, one unfamiliar wonder at a time.

He closed the journal, the city’s unfamiliar evening sounds drifting through his modest room’s window — different rhythms, different calls, an entirely different texture of nightlife than Greyhaven’s own familiar patterns — and found himself, despite the accumulated exhaustion of three weeks’ hard travel, genuinely reluctant to close his eyes and end the day’s remarkable discoveries even a moment sooner than necessary.
