Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 88: Chapter 88 — Stand and Hold

The Broodmother came at him the moment the others vanished into the crystallized terrain, its bulk moving with a speed that made every instinct Arlen had honed across a year of careful training scream at him to run.

He didn’t run.

He met its first strike with Aura Ward, the technique gathering just in time to absorb the worst of the impact, though the sheer weight behind the blow still drove him back several staggering steps, his boots gouging furrows through the crystalline ground. He countered immediately, driving Edgeline Strike into the nearest exposed joint of its foreleg, and felt the technique connect solidly — a decent wound, though nowhere near enough to slow something this massive.

The creature reared back, mandibles clicking with a sound like grinding stone, and unleashed another spray of caustic venom. Arlen threw himself sideways, Storm Step carrying him clear with barely a hand’s width to spare, and felt heat sear the air where he’d stood a heartbeat before — the venom apparently potent enough to scorch even the ground it touched.

This is going to kill me if I fight it carefully, he thought, circling wide to keep himself from being cornered against the nearest petrified husk of a tree. I need to be reckless enough to actually hurt it, and careful enough to survive doing so. Both, somehow.

He called on Ember Touch, gathering heat along his blade as he closed the distance again, targeting the same wounded joint he’d opened moments earlier. The Broodmother shrieked as the combined damage bit deeper, black ichor welling from the wound, but its retaliation came faster than he expected — a foreleg sweeping low to catch him across the legs, sending him sprawling hard across the crystalline ground.

Pain flared bright through his hip, and he barely rolled clear in time to avoid the creature’s mandibles descending toward where he’d fallen, the strike gouging a deep furrow into the earth close enough that fragments of crystallized rock sprayed against his face.

He scrambled upright, breathing hard, Enduring Vitality straining to keep pace with the accumulating damage. One wound. One decent wound in exchange for nearly losing a leg. This math doesn’t work if I keep trading evenly.

He drew on Earthen Grip instead, pressing his palm briefly against the ground as he retreated, and found, with grim satisfaction, that he could sense the creature’s movement through the vibration of its massive legs against the crystallized earth — a half-second warning before each strike that gave him just enough time to properly position rather than simply react.

The fight stretched on, brutal and exhausting, Arlen weaving between strikes he could now anticipate a fraction sooner, landing careful, targeted blows against the same weakened joint whenever the opening presented itself. But the Broodmother seemed to adapt too, shifting its attack patterns just enough to counter his growing familiarity, and Arlen felt his reserves draining with alarming speed — Ember Touch’s heat costing more each time he called on it, Storm Step’s bursts growing shorter as his own stamina, even bolstered by Enduring Vitality, began genuinely faltering.

A stray strike caught his shoulder during one exchange, not a direct hit but close enough that the venom’s residue scorched across his skin, and he staggered back with a cry he couldn’t quite suppress, his sword arm going briefly, terrifyingly numb.

Not yet, he told himself, forcing his fingers to tighten back around the hilt despite the searing pain. Not yet. Keep moving. Keep thinking.

He called on Hawk’s Eye, desperate for any advantage, and found, studying the creature’s carapace with newly sharpened clarity, a section along its underside where the crystalline plating grew noticeably thinner — likely some vulnerability exposed only when it reared to strike from above.

There. That’s the opening. I just need to survive long enough to actually reach it.

He feinted low, drawing the Broodmother’s attention toward what looked like another strike at its wounded foreleg, and when it reared back to bring its full weight down in retaliation, exposing the thinner plating along its underside exactly as he’d hoped, Arlen called on Storm Step for everything the technique had left to give.

The burst carried him directly beneath the creature’s rearing bulk, and he drove his sword upward with every remaining reserve he possessed — Ember Touch and Edgeline Strike combined, fire and Aura screaming together through the blade as it found the thin, vulnerable plating and drove deep.

The Broodmother’s shriek this time carried genuine, mortal agony, its massive form convulsing violently as the wound tore wide, and Arlen barely managed to throw himself clear before its collapsing weight would have crushed him entirely.

He hit the ground hard, rolling several times before finally coming to a stop, and looked up in time to see the creature thrashing in its death throes, legs flailing wildly against the crystallized earth, sending fragments of shattered crystal scattering in every direction.

One fragment caught him across the temple, sharp and sudden, and the world spun briefly before he forced himself to focus, dragging his battered body further from the creature’s flailing reach.

It took another full minute before the Broodmother’s convulsions finally stilled, its massive form settling into permanent, unmoving silence, and Arlen lay where he’d fallen for a long moment afterward, simply breathing, every part of his body screaming with accumulated damage.

Alive, he thought, the realization arriving slow and disbelieving. I’m actually still alive.

He forced himself upright eventually, every movement costing considerable effort, and surveyed the aftermath with the same careful, methodical attention he brought to everything — even now, even exhausted and injured past anything he’d previously endured, that discipline held.

His shoulder throbbed where the venom had caught him, the skin an angry, blistered red that Enduring Vitality was working to heal but hadn’t yet fully managed. His hip ached fiercely from the earlier strike, and blood trickled warm down the side of his face from where the crystal fragment had cut him. He’d need proper rest, proper healing, before he was fit to travel any real distance.

But the Broodmother lay dead before him, its massive form finally, permanently still, and Arlen understood, standing there amid the wreckage of the fight, exactly what this victory had actually cost — not just the physical toll, though that alone was considerable, but the sheer, desperate margin by which he’d survived at all.

He limped toward the creature’s fallen bulk, sword still gripped tight in his trembling hand, and studied the massive form with the same careful attention he gave every new discovery, even now.

I need to rest before I do anything else, he thought, glancing toward the surrounding valley with weary, cautious eyes. But first — before the wound stops being fresh, before I lose whatever chance this moment offers — I need to see what this creature has to give me.

He sank down beside the Broodmother’s still form, his whole body aching with exhaustion, and reached, with careful, deliberate hands, toward the flesh exposed by the wound that had finally ended the fight.
